Jason Hewitt Reaches 100 Goals - A Frozen Steel Tribute

Bulldog. Warrior. Leader.

There have been many words used to describe Jason Hewitt (not all complimentary, myself included). But now you can add 'centurion'.

His goal on Wednesday night's 7-1 demolition of Cardiff saw Hewitt score his 100th goal in the Elite League, which is no mean feat.

Hewitt had already scored 15 Elite League goals before signing for the Steelers part-way through the 2005/6 season, along with Mark Thomas in the fallout from the folding of the London Racers. He had to wait until the following season to score his first goal in Sheffield though.

Since then, Hewitt has amassed over 500 games for the Steelers, which is incredible longevity in a sport where trading and club-swapping are part and parcel of being a player. His most successful season came under Ben Simon, when he scored 17+31 for 48 points, with 148 of his total 1117 penalty minutes coming that season too.

It's no secret that I'm not Jason's biggest fan, as I outlined in one of the first pieces I wrote for the blog. For me, he had been resting on his laurels for a couple of seasons now, and I challenged him to pick up the pace again. He certainly seem to have done that in the last couple of months, as he has stepped up to the plate, and along with Jonathan Phillips has been one of the most consistent performers over the winter.

Hewy is never going to set the world on fire with Kane-esque skills, but by channelling his guile, aggression and tenacity, there is a good hockey player in there.

So congratulations Jason, its a fine achievement.

What are your memories of Hewitt's 100 goals? What sticks in your mind from his time as a Steeler? Get in touch at the below methods, you know how this works.
