Weekend Preview - Capitals (a) Stars (a)

The first Scotland weekend of the year sees the Steelers travel the east coast to our good friends in the Capital, and on to see our old friend Chris Blight on Tayside.

Some very good news out of the Steelers camp this week, all leads to a wave of positivity for the road trip.

The Walkeden Review - Throwback Thursday 19.10.2005

Hi everyone welcome to the first throwback article where I’m going to look at an old game and I don’t know why I picked this one!

Wednesday 19th October 2005 – Sheffield Steelers v Edinburgh Capitals @ Motorpoint Arena. Face-off: 7.30pm, Challenge Cup

Sheffield Steelers - 9
Warren Tait
Mike Peron
Dan Ceman (2)
Martin Masa (2)
Jonas Lennartsson (2)
Andrew Luciuk

Edinburgh Capitals - 0

The game I picked first was a home game against the Edinburgh Capitals at the Arena on Wednesday 19th October 2005 when we had to beat the Caps by at least 10 goals to progress in the Challenge Cup, this game also saw the return of Tony Hand to Sheffield.

The Steelers were in their Teal Green Jerseys and the Capitals were in their Blue with red shoulders jersey. Lehmann was in goal for the Steelers and Martin Kucera was in goal for the Capitals. The game showed Rod Sarich in the team who is obviously still in this year’s team but I must say the guy looks younger. Mr Shudra also still in the D.

Sheffield started the game the better of the two and was looking to get going fast as they need to win by at least 10 goals to get into the semi-finals, the first big chance of the game fell to Masa as he was on the breakaway but tried to make Kucera make the first move but couldn’t get it past the knee pads. Steelers got the first powerplay of the night and wow Sarich had some pace back then as he skated into the zone before firing a one timer from the blue line straight into the body of Kucera, It really was all Steelers during the first period Lehman didn’t have much to do other than playing the puck at times when the Capitals had cleared down the Ice, Kucera was seeing plenty of rubber as Steelers was finding options through Shudra, Masa, Simpson along with the third line playing had and Warren Tait was unlucky not to open the scoring mid-way through the period. Sheffield finally opened the scoring on with 3:55 left in the 1st period when Warren Tait forced a save out of Kucera but it rebounded back of his stick to open the scoring at 1-0. It was very quickly 2-0 as Simpson shot from the point and forced a rebound out of Kucera and Peron drove the net to lift the wrist shot into the back of the net. Not even a meeting later it should have been 3-0 as Simpson walked in but couldn’t beat the pads of Kucera. But Sheffield went into the 1st break 2-0 up needing another 8 goals to progress after a very one sided period with Kucera keeping the Capitals in the game.
End of the 1st Period: Sheffield Steelers 2-0 Edinburgh Capitals

Sheffield started the second period with their 1st line out to get going fast, even when the Capitals tried to create some offence they would soon lose the puck before they had the opportunity to have a shot on Lehman’s goal. Sheffield didn’t change their approach they carried on pushing up high leaving one D man back on his own because of the amount of goals we needed so we was taking a lot of risks. Danny Ceman would make it 3-0 on 23:59 as Masa somehow picked Ceman out who went top corner and Kucera had no chance with that one. Edinburgh had a great chance to pull one back but the puck went over the stick of the Capital forward with Lehman scrambling to get to the other side of the net. With the Steelers on the delayed penalty Tony hand thought he touched the puck but Masa was found all alone at the back door by assisted by Kent Simpson for his fourth assist of the night so far to tap in for 4-0. Capitals finally created some offence after McPherson forced a great glove save out Lehman that was just after Regan Kelly laid a big hit on Capital’s Lisabeth. With the Steelers on the power play on 33:35 Kucera tried to make the save of Masa but with a loose puck Jonas Lennartsson scored his first Steelers goal to make it 5-0. Capitals did have a golden opportunity with Jim Vickers in possession all alone at the back Jody Lehman stole what should have been a certain goal with 5 minutes left in the second period. With the clock ticking down on the second period Sheffield carried on pressing and just couldn’t break through and would take a 5-0 lead into the third period needing no less than another 5 goals at least.
End of the 2nd Period: Sheffield Steelers 5-0 Edinburgh Capitals

The third period almost started in perfect fashion but with Kucera out of his goal Simpson couldn’t finish into the open goal, of the very next face-off thought the Steelers made it 6-0 49 seconds into the third period Peron played a backhanded pass for Andrew Luciuk to re-direct past Kucera. Lennartsson then went onto score his second of the night just a couple of minutes later assisted by Simpson for his sixth assist of the night Lennartsson was on the breakaway and put it through the five hole of Kucera to make it 7-0 with just under 17 minutes remaining it was very possible and then a strange thing David Lawrence replaced Jody Lehman in between the pipes as Lehman had an equipment problem but would soon return. Peron had a great chance for an eight as he was brought down in front of Kucera but nothing is given to the disbelief of Mike Peron but the Steelers got back on it looking for that 8th goal. Kent Simpson then had a shot cleared of the line to his frustration but he had still been racking up the points as he had already assisted six out of the seven goals. With under 5 minutes remaining Martin Masa skates into the zone and fired a thunderbolt of a back hand past Kucera, it would very quickly be 9-0 with some tick tack passing it left Dan Ceman to shoot into the open goal and it left the Steelers needing 1 more goal with 4 minutes to play. But it would be one goal too many as the Steelers would fall a goal short, they through everything they had at Kucera including pulling Lehman for the extra forward but would unfortunately go out of the challenge cup but was a fantastic effort by the Steelers.

Final Score: Sheffield Steelers 9-0 Edinburgh Capitals

The Walkeden Review - Getting Into Hockey With Chris Evans

With the new Elite League season well underway I spoke with another fan from Scunthorpe, Scunthorpe is a town that hasn’t got an Ice Rink so is a town that is very much a stranger to Ice Hockey so I spoke with Chris Evans who is actually from a village very near to Scunthorpe and is currently living in Sheffield while he attends university about how he got into the sport.

FSB - What or who got you into Hockey?
CE - I saw an advert in Sheffield and I only heard good stuff from my friends who had been to it

FSB - Do you remember the teams of your first games and where?
CE - It was at the Motorpoint Arena and was between the Sheffield Steelers and the Cardiff Devils

FSB - Are you glad you went to an Ice Hockey game?
CE - I am very glad that I went to an Ice Hockey game

FSB - Where do you think British Ice Hockey is going?
CE - I think it has the potential to be one of the top leagues in Europe and it has the potential to attract big names from the states

FSB - Would you ever go out your way to attend more games? If so why?
CE - Yes I would because I enjoy ice hockey a lot and would happily go to more games

FSB - Have you got anything to say to someone that might be attending their first game?
CE - Keep an eye on the puck and just enjoy it and look up the rules before you go, it will make understanding things easier

Thank you for reading and thank you to Chris for taking the time to answer a few questions! I plan on doing a few more of these in the near future. Also if there is anyone reading this that is from a town or a village around the Scunthorpe area etc. without a rink or without easy access please get in touch with me on twitter @TomWalkeden

Weekend Preview - Hull (EC, EL) (iceSheffield)

Just the one game this weekend for your Sheffield Steelers, as we entertain the Hull Stingrays at iceSheffield - let's not welcome them after last time.

Tonight's game has a 7:30 faceoff, not 7pm.

The Walkeden Review - The Weekend's Touchy Subject

Good evening everyone hope your all having a good week!

Right down to business as well all know Sheffield and Cardiff both played each other home and away the past weekend and it didn’t go by without incident on and off the Ice and off the Ice I’m off-course on about fans on social media especially Twitter over the last couple of days and today (Thursday 23rd October 2014) I was reading tweets between two Cardiff fans who were arguing among themselves and then there was other discussion going on between both sets of fans and to be honest with you it really wound me up and originally I had this to say.

“Give G all the stick you want just because he’s at Sheffield you’ve had a problem with us for a long time but at the end of the day it wasn't G's decision to leave was it?? We needed a coach he wanted a job business done and a good decision he won a championship within 8 weeks, now you’re all saying Francis is a legend for what he did on Saturday which personally I think is pathetic! Yet if roles were reversed and it was G you'd want his head? Yes or No? And as for Mosienko call him what you want! He knows what he did is wrong yes he broke the rules he shouldn’t have done it and I’m in no way condoning what he did in any shape or form! But he’s served his ban, paid his fine and I believe everyone deserves a second chance and Sheffield gave him that and I’m thankful for that he is one hell of a player and one I would rather have playing for us than against us, the fans wasn’t sure about him because of his passed and I was one of them, but for me he’s proving his critics wrong by letting his hockey do the talking and at the moment his points are showing that! So why not concentrate on your own team’s problems and your thuggish players while Steelers let their skill do the talking, we'll be sure to wave at you from the top of the league in March.

That is what I had to say earlier and I’m going to add it. At the end of the game on Saturday Trevor Hendrikx received a match penalty and many Cardiff fans complained about him being suspended for the game against us on the Sunday at the BBT but yet the rules state that anyone that receives a match penalty comes with an automatic one game suspension no during this Jesse Mychan and Cullen Eddy both received game misconducts and both got away with a suspension and fine which personally I was surprised with and thought they both got off likely under the circumstances of what happened. Now today (Thursday 23rd October 2014) DOPS (Department of Player Safety) had their say and explained that Hendrikx received a one match suspension which had already been served after continuously hitting Steelers forward Tyler Mosienko while Mosienko was unwilling to retaliate and he also ignored match officials when told to return to his team bench and also punched Cullen Eddy in the face knocking his helmet off by going over the officials now for me that sort of behaviour is unacceptable in any sport as neither player was able to protect themselves/ and if it was a Steeler I can guarantee I would be saying the same thing. Now if that’s a big part of his game I feel sorry for Cardiff and its fans. You can moan about the one match suspension all you want but it’s the rules while receiving a match penalty and he was probably lucky not to receive more and got off likely. Now it also came out that Neil Francis who is the bench coach of the Cardiff Devils also received a one game suspension along with a £250 fine and a warning over his future conduct after it shows on video evidence to be making hand gestures followed by foul and abusive language towards Mosienko in connection with his match fixing in Europe with a previous team now as a bench coach doesn’t Francis have to stay professional at all times or at least keep control of the players on his own bench in which he failed to do and I thought what he did to Mosienko was completely un-sportsmanlike and should know better. I don’t understand how Cardiff fans like what he did! They say its banter it’s part of the sport to get Mosienko to react well if it is fair play to Mosienko for keeping his cool and being the bigger man and it’s not banter what’s so ever as a representative of a professional sports club he should remember to remain as professional as possible at all times and certainly almost brought the game into disrepute on Saturday evening.

I’m glad to see one of the old rivalries coming back this year especially with the way both teams have been built this year but with rivalries you also need to be sportsmanlike and show at least some kind of class and that goes from the owners, staff, players and finally the fans of both clubs as it’s the fans who are the future of the game.

Match Report: 22.10.2014 - Steelers v Capitals EIHL

Wednesday 22nd October 2014 – Sheffield Steelers (5-1-0) v Edinburgh Capitals (2-4-1) @ Ice Sheffield. Face-off: 7.30pm, Elite League

Sheffield Steelers – 6
Colton Fretter – 1st
Rodney Sarich – 1st
Tyler Mosienko – 2nd
Michael Forney – 2nd
Colton Fretter – 3rd
Colton Fretter – 3rd PP

Edinburgh Capitals – 2
Jade Portwood – 2nd
Rene Jarolin – 2nd

Midweek hockey would get underway at Ice Sheffield as Steelers would take on Edinburgh in league action but it would be Capitals that would attack first as a dumped puck was caught by Portwood who managed to turn but saw the puck covered by Doyle before he got a shot away but that would be it for Capitals offensively for a good while after Edinburgh killed an early powerplay Sheffield took the lead on 5:43 as Darrell hay fired a shot from the blue line only for Fretter to pick up the rebound and forcing Hiadlovsky to make a move before slotting the puck into the back of the net for 1-0 and in the very next attack it was 2-0 on 7:07 after Sarich finished off a promising attacking move by the Steelers by nicely firing his wrist shot past Hiadlovsky and it looked like it could be rout tonight by Tomas Hiadlovsky was in outstanding form and was keeping Edinburgh in the game but it wasn’t just the Capitals netminder performing heroics as Jay King jumped out of the penalty box to find himself on the breakaway but Doyle skated out to play the puck out himself and soon after Callum Boyd showed some great skating ability to skate into the Sheffield zone beating several Steelers defenceman before forcing a great body save out of the Sheffield netminder, Sarich and O’Connor would have the better of further opportunities in the period and Dennis Rix and Greg Collins would both see their scoring chances thwarted by Doyle and Sheffield would take a 2-0 lead into the break.
End of the 1st Period: Sheffield Steelers 2–0 Edinburgh Capitals
Shots on Goal: Steelers 22-4 Capitals

Second period got underway and Sheffield fans didn’t know what to expect as second period didn’t seem to be our speciality at the moment but Edinburgh found themselves on an early man advantage and forced some good pressure but ultimately didn’t get enough shots on Doyle and Sheffield would ultimately kill the penalty and end up on their own man advantage as Latulippe missed a great opportunity on any other night could have had several goals as Hiadlovsky caught the shot of the Steelers forward from point blank range and also linked up well with his team mates almost setting up Sarich and Mosienko who both saw their shots saved by Hiadlovsky. On 34:39 Sheffield let Edinburgh back into the game when Jade Portwood got the Caps on the board assisted by Collins and Naslund to bring the Scottish team within one goal but it wouldn’t last for long when at 37:01 some fantastic work by Phillips allowed him to square the puck to Mosienko who had the entire goal to aim at and finished it off with ease, In the next attack some great 1-2 work by Sheffield resulting in Fretter firing one against the post as the net was knocked of its moorings but Edinburgh found themselves back in the game on 38:55 after Rene Jarolin scored of his own rebound off Doyle to shoot into a wide open goal but goals were going in for fun at the moment and it was Sheffield’s turn again as Ben O’Connor skated his own way into the Edinburgh zone and played a backhanded pass to Forney in front of goal who fired a one timer over the shoulder of Hiadlovsky at 39:43 to take the Steelers 4-2 up at the second interval.
End of the 2nd Period: Sheffield Steelers 4–2 Edinburgh Capitals
Shots on Goal: Steelers 14–11 Capitals

The final 20 of the game got underway and Edinburgh knew they had to conjure something up or they’d be going home empty handed Capitals would successfully kill an early power play of the Steelers but shortly after they returned to full strength Sheffield finally broke through again on 44:40 when Roy found himself in possession of the puck behind the goal he played to Fretter in between the circles who fired a rocket of a wrist shot past Hiadlovsky into the top of the goal for 5-2 lead. There would be a coming together between Hewitt and Collins of the puck and as both skated back to their respective benches Riley Emmerson went for Hewitt and would receive 2+10 misconduct for his actions. Sheffield were controlling a lot of the puck but it doesn’t always go without mistakes as Edinburgh had further power plays and almost pulled another goal back But Doyle was fantastic as Capitals through several shots on goal and also denied Collins on a breakaway which was probably their best opportunity of the 3rd period but with the clock ticking down Sheffield had one final power play as Petran was called for hooking, Sheffield were causing some pressure circling well around the Caps zone and on 57:03 Sheffield scored their 6th and the final goal of the game and Roy was attempted to shoot a backhand past Hiadlovsky from just in front but Fretter was able to pick the puck up and shoot from the right hand goal to give the Steelers a 6-2 win and his first hat-trick of the season.
Shots on Goal: Steelers 19–6 Capitals

FINAL SCORE: Sheffield Steelers 6–2 Edinburgh Capitals

Boxscore (1st-2nd-3rd-OT-[PIM]-{PP}-S)

Midweek Preview - Steelers vs Capitals (EL) (22/10/14)

Humpday hockey at iceSheffield tonight, as we play our first game of the season against the all new Edinburgh Capitals.

It's been an interesting start to the season for my second team - the performances have certainly improved, but results have been, shall we say, mixed.

They'll be looking to make a name for themselves by taking the scalp of the Steelers, who in turn will be looking to put to bed any niggling doubts that may exist after sufferering their first Elite League loss at the weekend.

Muzzy4Money Launches - Get Involved

What makes a great moustache?

Having a moustache used to be a fine art. Lots of cultivation, commitment and hard work. Getting it how you want it. How often do you see a good old-fashioned

twirly moustache these days? Not enough, by my estimation.

Now, this season we have a lot of players with beards. Not to say a word against them, but anyone can grow a beard. Just don't shave. It's that easy, even I'm doing it.

But a moustache...you have to shape it. You have to mould it. You have to care for it.

They have taken a bit of a pelting in recent memory, usually associated with dirty old men in macs. Apart from one month a year.

You will all be aware of the Movember appeal in aid of testicular cancer. You may not be aware of its cousin, Hockey Players Assemble's Muzzy 4 Money.

Organised by ex-Steeler (and current Clan player) Chris Frank, it is an appeal to encourage hockey players to grow their moustaches in order to raise money for cancer research charities.

Will we see any Magnums this year? Or maybe some 1920s' Vaudevillian silent movie bad guys? Or perhaps even the good old Fu Man Chu.

I know hockey players read us - some, anyway. Want to help out a good cause?

It's not just players though. Muzzy4money wants fans too. Male or female, young or old, show Muzzy4Money your best moustache or faux-tache and you could win a prize - you don't even have had to have raised the most money.

Match Report: 19.10.2014 - Devils v Steelers EC/EIHL

Sunday 19th October 2014 – Cardiff Devils (3-4-1) v Sheffield Steelers (5-0-0) @ Big Blue Tent. Face-off: 6pm, Erhardt Conference/Elite League

Cardiff Devils – 5
Brent Walton PP
Jake Morissette
Mark Richardson PP
Brent Walton
Jake Morissette EN.SHG

Sheffield Steelers – 2
Tyler Mosienko
Jason Hewitt

Part two of the weekends clash with Cardiff meant this time we faced them in the Big Blue Tent, Cardiff has Hudson and Hendrikx missing and Sheffield were still without Dowd and Morency but it was the home side who was looking for revenge after the defeat in Sheffield 24 hours earlier and it was the Devils who started the better of the team and really controlled a large portion of the game as Doyle was very busy earlier on but Sheffield did create offence of their own but Bowns would stand in their way, the game like the night before was physical as Devils were throwing in a lot of hits and Sheffield didn’t seem to want to throw hits but there was a coming together between Haddad and Latulippe early on as the Steelers forward avoided a hit of Haddad and Devils man didn’t like the fact Latulippe moved but on 7:02 Cardiff would have a power play attempt and it would work a treat as Doug Clarkson had possession of the puck in the Sheffield zone before throwing the puck in front of goal for Brent Walton to snipe a one timer past Doyle for 1-0 lead. Sheffield couldn’t re-organise themselves after that and Cardiff came straight back at the visitors and made them pay on 8:36 just 38 seconds since the first goal when Batch showed great persistence to start the attack the Devils as Morissette tucked one under the arm of Doyle from the right hand circle for 2-0 score line assisted by Martin and Lord. So a terrible couple of minutes left Sheffield with a lot of work to do and didn’t make thing easier for themselves on the Powerplay after a poor turnover let in Joey Martin on the breakaway but he couldn’t make it 3-0 and saw his shot saved by Frank Doyle and it wouldn’t be his first breakaway but still wouldn’t be able to score his second but Sheffield were finding ways to attack through Roy, Fretter and Mosienko but Bowns was in fantastic form to turn their shots away but Sheffield were definitely having an off night so far went into the break 2-0 down with a lot of work to do in the 2nd.
End of the 1st Period: Cardiff Devils 2–0 Sheffield Steelers
Shots on Goal: Devils 8–9 Steelers

Second period got underway and Gerad Adams had tried shifting his lines about after they seemed to be ineffective in the first period Steelers were also playing another man down as Sarich wouldn’t Ice for the remainder of the game for a reason that I can only guess is injured related but nothing was announced by the Steelers but Mosienko would be called early on for tripping which was a penalty he didn’t need to take as he was offside anyway but on 23:14 Richardson was passed the puck at the back door and he nicely slotted the puck under the pads of Doyle to give the Devils a 3-0 lead. Almost straight away Cardiff was again on the PP which was unfortunate as it should have most probably gone the other way. Sheffield would kill the penalty but the game could have been out of sight for Sheffield if it wasn’t for Frank Doyle who made some massive saves to try and keep his team in this and Sheffield were starting to come into this game as first Hay saw his shot blocked before Bowns had deny both Roy and O’Connor in the dying seconds of the period but Cardiff were taking a very comfortable 3 goal lead into the third period.
End of the 2nd Period: Cardiff Devils 3–0 Sheffield Steelers
Shots on Goal: Devils 9–8 Steelers

Sheffield came into the third period needing a big final twenty minutes to have any chance of getting back into this game and Steelers started in the right fashion as Roy, Latulippe and Eddy all saw their shots saved but Sheffield finally get themselves on the board after great work by Fretter he forced a pad save out of Bowns which then allowed Mosienko to shoot in the rebound to bring the Steelers within two goals on 44:12. Cardiff would have another 5 on 3 chance but some fantastic penalty killing by the Steelers left the visitors in with a chance in this game but with Sheffield pressing well penalties were coming from an incident including Forney and Roy which isn’t good to have your top two point scorers in the penalty box when your trailing but on 51:23 and even handed Devils were looking for another goal and they eventually found it when Steelers failed to clear the zone Tyson Marsh had the puck on his stick on the blue line before shooting on goal through traffic and Brent Walton got a tip on it to score his second of the game and put it through the five hole of Doyle to restore the 3 goal lead but it didn’t the Steelers long to strike back after a fantastic shift by Ben O’Connor he played the puck from the right of goal on the boards to Hewitt at the back door who fired a one timer past Bowns at 52:37 to bring the Steelers back within two goals. Cardiff would have another 5 on 3 power play after poor discipline by the Steelers was costing them tonight but nothing would come of it and Sheffield would continue to press high and Frank Doyle was pulled at 58:46, but with an empty net to shoot at and shorthanded Jake Morissette found himself all alone on the breakaway after Sheffield failed to keep it in the zone and the Devils forward slotted into the empty net to give Cardiff the 5-2 victory which was Sheffield’s first league defeat of the season.
Shots on Goal: Devils 9–12 Steelers

FINAL SCORE: Cardiff Devils 5–2 Sheffield Steelers

Boxscore (1st-2nd-3rd-OT-[PIM]-{PP}-S)

This weekend sees my first in-person game of the season, having been reduced to a webcast-viewing-brief thus far. This also means that the camera will be out, and we will be recording for what will be episode 4 of The Furnace.

As I've said before, FSB is a fansite. We're nothing without fan input. And we want it tomorrow.

I want an answer to the question:

Who has impressed you the most so far?
Whether its just 10 seconds of who and why, or 2/3 minutes, we want it on camera.

Failing that, if you're camera-shy, your input is still valued. Leave a comment on this post, or comment on the post on our Facebook page, and there's every chance that your comments will be read out on The Furnace.

Weekend Preview - Cardiff (H/A) (EC) 18/19th October 2014

This weekend sees us take on the Cardiff Devils twice, with Saturday in the Motorpoint and Sunday in the Big Blue Tent - not many more visits there left now.

It seemed like I was going to have to report back on how we'd look very short this weekend, then we got a bit of good news.

The Walkeden Review - O'Connor Signs For The Steelers

Is it just me guys or is Sheffield absolutely buzzing today (Thursday 16th October 2014) and this is all down to the fact the Steelers signed GB international Ben O’Connor! I’m not going to lie I’m extremely excited about this signing as he’s one of the best players around and he’s only going to make our blue line better.

Ben was released by Arlan from Kazakhstan and I don’t know why he was released but does it matter as the important thing is that he’s going to be putting on a Steelers uniform this weekend, I’ve been saying for years that I wanted to see Ben play for the Steelers and its finally happening.

Now the part that puts a bit of a downer on the news it’s only a short term deal which could become a permanent deal but that is a decision that Ben has to make as no doubt he’s going to have a lot of interest from teams in Europe so I myself expect him to be back out in Europe sooner rather than later. This deal allows Cullen Eddy to play up front as were still without the injured Robert Dowd and Pascal Morency who Morency actually hasn’t appeared since the first game of the season and with Colton Fretter back from suspension on Saturday means were back to full strength and it all means that Ben will slot straight into the Steelers blue line.

Ben comes to Sheffield with some big boots to fill as everyone knows his dad is a hero round here but I’m 100% that he won’t let Mike down. This isn’t his first time in the EIHL as he’s previously played for the Basingstoke Bison, Edinburgh Capitals and the Coventry Blaze in total scoring 63 points (21+42) in 166 appearances but for the last 4 years the GB D-man has been in Europe spending the last three years in Kazakhstan but before that he was in France with Morzine-Avoriaz-Les Gets where in the regular season he recorded 13 points in just 26 games which is a point every other game but then he moved to Kazakhstan first spending a year at Saryarka Karaganda playing 62 games overall scoring 35 points (15+20) before spending the last two years at Arlan Kokshetau where he played a total of 124 games regular and postseason scoring 113 points (35+78) which doesn’t include the 12 points he’s got this season for Arlan in 9 games (7+5) so his stats show he can play with the best and this weekend at home to the Cardiff Devils we get to see him in a Steelers uniform for the first time.

I believe Ben will be wearing #81 (It’s what I got from the Steelers twitter account from a picture of the sponsorship grid I have tweeted them to see if they can confirm it) and I’m pretty sure his Jersey will be a good seller especially if he ends up being here for the whole season I mean look at Sestito he was only here for a short term and I see plenty of his jersey about.

So come on then guys what are your views on this singing tell us what you think and how excited you are? Or maybe you’re not (quiet think of a reason why you wouldn’t be) but you know fans nowadays.

Thanks for reading guys. Any questions or comments please get in contact with the Frozen Steel Team on this article, Facebook or via Twitter:-

Stars Outshone By Committed Steelers - Steelers 6-3 Stars (EIHL, 15/10/14)

Jonathan Phillips recorded his 400th EIHL point as part of a man of the match performance, as the Steelers had to come from behind twice to beat a resilient Dundee Stars 6-3 at the Motorpoint Arena.

The Stars took the lead after just 22 seconds, John Mitchell finding the net after a sloppy start from the Steelers, who were only behind for a minute - Tyler Mosienko finding Rod Sarich out front for Roddy's first goal since the 12/13 season.

Frozen Steel Meets: Peterborough Phantoms Director Of Hockey Jon Kynaston

Some/Many/All of us have been impressed with the superb start Luke Ferrara has made in a Steelers uniform.

Injuries required that the 21 year old be borrowed from Peterborough ahead of schedule, and he took his chance by the horns, with a good display against Nottingham followed up by a man of the match performance against Hull, then a good showing against Coventry where he did not seem out of place.

So we know he's a promising talent, but has that always been the case? I spoke to Jon Kynaston, the Director of Hockey at his parent club Peterborough Phantoms, to ask about Luke's history, and how he sees things going for the bright prospect.

Steeldogs Spotlight - Brit Pack In 7th Heaven

The Bradfield Brewery Sheffield Steeldogs were in crossover Challenge Cup action.

Sheffield chose to go with an all British line up and were missing Craig Elliott but added the youthful faces of Cole Shudra and George Crawshaw to the team. Sharks had just eleven out skaters and played Jordan Boyle in goal opposite Brad Day.

Match Report: 12.10.2014 - Stingrays v Steelers CC

Sunday 12th October 2014 – Hull Stingrays (1-2-0) v Sheffield Steelers (5-1-1) @ Hull Arena. Face-off: 6pm, Challenge Cup

Hull Stingrays – 2
Jordan Mayer
Eric Galbraith

Sheffield Steelers – 3
Jason Hewitt
Michael Forney
Cullen Eddy PP

Sheffield travelled to Hull for their final challenge cup group game 3 days after beating them in Sheffield young Luke Ferrara was playing with Peterborough so Sheffield gave a debut to 16 year old Jack Dransfield but the Yorkshire derby got underway with Liam Sewell in the middle and he was to have an interesting game to say the least. It was Sheffield who started the better as Mark Thomas picked out Forney with a great cross ice pass only for Brown to get the slightest of touches to put his effort wide but it would be Sheffield who scored the first goal of the game when on 3:32 assisted by Latulippe and Eddy who both forced some good saves out of David Brown from in front of goal for Jason Hewitt to tap shoot from the right of goal to score his fourth goal of the season. Then from the restart Colton Fretter was denied by Brown after skating in front of goal and then not ten seconds later Fretter laid down a big hit on Larke against the boards which almost started a line brawl and to the disgust of the home support they wasn’t happy with the hit. Colton Fretter however would receive a two minute penalty for slashing and then five plus game penalty for boarding which would give Hull a seven minute powerplay at 5:25 Matthew Davies and Mathieu Roy also received roughing penalty’s for the coming together of the teams but Sheffield would have to play the rest of the game a man down and it will be interesting to see if the Steelers forward receives a ban in the week. Hull just wasn’t able to make the breakthrough as Doyle was in fine form as was the Sheffield penalty kill and they would kill all seven minutes to the delight of the travelling support. Both netminders would have to be on form performing some cracking saves as Hull also missed two golden opportunities from the door step which only needed the slightest touch to level the score but luck was on the visitor’s side and Sheffield would take the lead into the break.
End of the 1st Period: Hull Stingrays 0–1 Sheffield Steelers
Shots on Goal: Stingrays 8-8 Steelers

So we had a very interesting first period and we had more of the same to come as it was becoming a very gritty performance by both teams. Hull would get an early chance on the man advantage but again were un-able to get on the boards as Doyle showed great reactions to dash to the right of goal to deny Davies as the puck bounced awkwardly of the glass but Hull would level the scoring on 23:!6 as Jordan Mayer assisted by Larke and Tanaka showed some clever stick handling to beat the Steelers defence and Frank Doyle at his near post and that was the Hull forwards seventh goal of the season so far after also scoring against the Steelers in midweek as well. Both teams were getting stuck in and showing the fans what they like to see passion both sides were laying down hits taking penalties and if it wasn’t for Frank Doyle and David Brown probably and should have been a few more goals in this period. It wasn’t Sheffield’s best performance in the middle session as since Fretter had been ejected from the game had struggled in the final 3rd as Hull had seemed to get under their skins but with Hull killing a penalty with just over five minutes left Matthew Davies jumped out of the box and found himself on the breakaway to give the Stingrays the lead but Doyle had his number and denied him with the leg pads when at the other end Mathieu Roy was denied by the posts and not for the first time this week, but the Yorkshire derby would be level at 1-1 at the end of the 2nd period and it really was anyone’s game at the moment.
End of the 2nd Period: Hull Stingrays 1–1 Sheffield Steelers
Shots on Goal: Stingrays 7–7 Steelers

Third period got underway with the scores level at 1-1 with a gritty performance by both teams and we was in for more of the same after Lauzon had missed a great chance to put the home side ahead Eddy saw the puck bounce over his stick from a rebound as Baldwin shot but in the very next attack the Steelers did take the lead again on 46:52 as Mike Forney to the left of Brown skates into the face-off circle before firing his 9th of the season through the five hole of David Brown to give Sheffield a 2-1 lead and almost scored a second of the game as Baldwin threw the puck in front of goal but it was just too far for the Steelers forward to reach and Forney brought out the skills to the delight of the travelling fans before Mosienko took a hooking penalty but it would soon be levelled up as Turcotte was sent to sit down for holding and if it wasn’t for some fantastic defensive play by Thomas and Sarich the Stingrays probably would have levelled the game through Tanaka but as Mosienko jumped onto the Ice to the put the Steelers on the powerplay Cullen Eddy found himself in possession of the puck on the right before firing one hell of a rock low and hard past the right leg of Brown to put the Steelers 3-1 up on 51:56 cue the Eddy chants. But that wasn’t the end of the scoring as Hull pulled a second back on 54:35 as Eric Galbraith scored his second goal against the Steelers in a week after Carl Lauzon saw is shot padded away Galbraith finished the job tapping in from the right of Doyle’s goal. The game should have been level not long after as Cory Tanaka missed a golden opportunity in front of goal with the clock ticking down it kicked off again with another line brawl in a fashion as a Stingray went down Sewell had his hand up but both lines came together and Turcotte was laying into Roy but Eddy jumped in and dropped the gloves laying several punches on the Stingrays big man before putting him on the Ice, Both were thrown out of the game with 1:51 left as Roy was sent to the box for roughing to put Stingrays on the man advantage for the remainder of the game but as Eddy left the Ice he had his hands up in the air in front of the home support celebrating cue the Eddy chants once again but Sheffield would kill the penalty as Hull pulled Brown as well and they would take the four point weekend as well as top of the group and a game against the Dundee Stars in the quarter-finals of the cup in the new year.
Shots on Goal: Stingrays 10–12 Steelers

FINAL SCORE: Hull Stingrays 2–3 Sheffield Steelers

Boxscore (1st-2nd-3rd-OT-[PIM]-{PP}-S)

Why I Am Thankful For Hockey

So we have all obviously seen the recent events regarding our fan base. Regarding a lot of negativity. (If you haven't, I envy you.) So what this post is, rather than an analysis of the game against Coventry last night, is a post specifically about why I, and a lot of others I know, love hockey, and what it gave me.

5 Things We Learnt This Weekend - Deep Down n' Dirty

This week I'm going to include Wednesday's game against Hull, as I don't feel we learnt enough from that one game to form an entire article.

Fortunately, this weekend saw two similar games come up as we confirmed our status as winners of Challenge Cup group B.

Ice & Slice reports from the Senators' trip to Widnes.

A Letter Of Complaint To The Sheffield Steelers + David Simms' Response

Here, it is made public, presented without editing and as delivered, along with what the group consider the response from Simms in yesterday's programme. It is presented without comment from myself as editor.

The Walkeden Review - Getting Into Hockey With Jamie Morgan

With season underway I was thinking to myself about how we get more people introduced to the sport and me being from a little town called Scunthorpe in North Lincolnshire isn’t always the best I mean I love where I’m from but we don’t have an Ice Rink I mean think of the children growing up without an Ice Rink so there missing out on an amazing sport. My story of getting into this amazing sport is a long one but I’ve got many people into the game as a lot of my friends over the years were like what are watching on a weekend and so I bring them along one of them in fact has got a season ticket now. This time out I spoke to Jamie Morgan who is mad about his football and I invited him along two games and he obliged and here is a brief interview with a very good friend of mine.

FSB - Being from a town that isn’t known for Ice Hockey what was your first impressions on the game?
JM - I wasn't sure what I was going to think at first but as soon as the action got underway I was absolutely glued to the ice rink and the action. My first ice hockey match was down the road for me in Hull coming from Scunthorpe and to be fair to say Hull is a fairly big city I was surprised at how small their arena was but they did win the match 5-1 so I thought I was a bad jinx for the Sheffield Steelers ha-ha. That was until I saw them defeat Hull 3-1 in Sheffield.

FSB - What or who got you into Hockey?
JM - To be honest I was more of a casual ice hockey fan who watched matches on TV really like the Olympics and the odd match in American League when it was on TV etc. My friend Tom Walkeden also showed me some clips of some Sheffield Steelers matches and I thought to myself "I so have to go and watch them play and see what it's like to see them live"

FSB - Do you remember the teams of your first games and where?
JM - On the television I watched USA v Canada in The Olympics a fair bit back and the game was intense you can tell there's a massive rivalry between the 2 countries. The first match I saw live as I mentioned earlier was Hull Stingrays v Sheffield Steelers last season.

FSB - Are you glad you went to an Ice Hockey game?
JM - Absolutely delighted that I went to an ice hockey game. I now appreciate the toughness of the game that the players go through and you can tell how passionate they are to be out on the rink and basically trying to bash anything out of the opposition nobody seems to take any prisoners for sure. I was also impressed with how the fans no matter who you support were sat together and there's no segregation and a wonderful change compared to football is that you can take alcohol through into the stands and have it by your seat.

FSB - Where do you think British Ice Hockey is going? Does it have the potential to become even bigger?
JM - At the moment I can't really say my knowledge isn’t top notch but compared to the bigger countries such as USA and Canada etc. we are a million miles away behind them in my opinion. I don't think there are enough rich people who quite believe that Ice Hockey is the sport to invest in compared to let’s say football and rugby in Britain. I think it has the potential to grow in Britain definitely but there has got to be more interest in the sport for me. I am not saying it's not well supported because that would be disrespectful to the fans of all the teams and believe me I am now following Sheffield Steelers for good and will be attending more matches in the future. As I say my knowledge about British Ice Hockey isn't fantastic at the moment so I do apologise if I have appeared to be wide of the mark in my opinion.

FSB - Have you got anything to say to someone that might be attending their first game?
JM - I will say this for anyone who hasn't been there yet get down to your local team or whoever you fancy following and supporting and get to a game. The atmosphere is brilliant the interaction with the fans from hosting teams is fantastic as I found out in Hull and Sheffield. You will enjoy the sport for what it is trust me as it is fantastic.

Thank you for reading and thank you to Jamie for taking the time to answer a few questions you can find Jamie on Twitter @JamieMorgan1989 so give him a follow! I plan on doing a few more of these in the near future. Also if there is anyone reading this that is from a town or a village around the Scunthorpe area etc. without a rink or without easy access please get in touch with me on twitter @TomWalkeden

FSB Editorial - Why I'm Excited About The NHL Returning.

Today Ashley March wrote about how she wasn't as excited or interested in the NHL this season. You can find it here.

While I can understand the things she says (she said later that its the Americanisation of the sport that she doesn't like) I can't agree with it.

Personally, I've never been so excited by the start of a NHL season.

Cullen Eddy - Finding Ways To Win

Steelers number 6 returns to Frozen Steel, chartering his past couple of weeks in the UK.

As the games continue to come upon us we are finding different ways to win each and every
night.

Weekend Preview - Blaze (H) Stingrays (A) CC Wrapup Weekend

This weekend sees the Steelers complete their Challenge Cup group stage fixtures, and while qualification is all but assured, at least two points from the weekend would be nice just to see us safe.

Saturday sees the return of Steven Goertzen (along with Ashley Tait and Marc Lefebvre) to the arena for the first time since setting up the winner for Drew Fata in the Playoff final, while Sunday sees us travel to the Most Versatile Venue for the return game from Wednesday night.
