A Stefan Meyer goal - that in fairness he knew sod all about - 2 minutes into overtime gave the Steelers a big victory in the NIC and ensured that we took all the spoils from the festive double header.
Rob Sirianni continued his scoring against them lot run, finishing off a great assist from Meyer to give the Steelers the lead at 10:31, a lead that lasted roughly 80 seconds before Jonathan Boxill levelled at 11:53.
Frank Doyle kept us in it throughout the second, and indeed most of the third, with a goaltending masterclass. Everything seemed to hit him, through good positioning and great goaltending skills.
Jonathan Phillips regained the lead at 36:56 with a superbly worked goal between himself, Nate DiCasmirro and nominated Man Of The Match Robert Dowd.
The lead lasted until late in the third, when Matt Francis rounded off a 3-on-1 during a Steelers powerplay - yes, shorthanded, the Panthers had a 3-on-1 - and levelled with 11 minutes to go.
Both Doyle and Neil Conway made great saves to deny the forwards of both teams - a great double save from Jeff Legue and Sirianni late on stood out from the Panthers' #1 - but the deadlock could not be broken.
So into overtime, and a great backcheck from Dowd led to a patient buildup, with Gord Baldwin eventually throwing a puck towards goal, hitting Meyer somewhere around the backside and bouncing past Conway to send the incredibly loud Steelers fans into rapture.
Tom Walkeden will bring you a full match report later on today, probably when he's sobered up.
GET IN.
