Hockey Soapbox - Season 3 Week 10 - Not A Good Few Days

Welcome once more this week's Hockey Soapbox. As usual the panel are talking about some of the issues that you always want answering. On the panel this week are your Editor-In-Chief Mark, Nathan plus both Sarah and Fay. If we get any more replies, then they'll be added in due course.

With that in mind, it's time to get on your Soapboxes!

1. Five Words On Saturday
Struck for seven by Lightning
Glad I didn’t watch it
That Could Have Gone Better!
The better team won it

2. Five Words On Sunday
A win is a win
Bored Senseless For Two Periods
Got the job done, thankfully
A win but not fantastic

3. Have we missed a trick by not bringing Geoff Walker back?

Nathan: Yes and No. Yes because even if he took a few games to get going his play off performance was outstanding and the physicality he showed is sadly lacking in our forward lines currently. He would bring a bit more balance and a lot more teeth and perhaps we could see a more consistent 4 line team than a fragmented 3 line team that we see at the moment.

No because.... well there is no No.
Fay: I think so. It’s hard to see where he would fit though with Mags and Deveaux in that type of role now. Loved his character in our team last year. Glad to see him back just really wish it was with us.
Mark: I think we have. Everybody knows that when you need players to step it up, Geoff certainly did so. He might not have scored bucket loads but his work ethic is second to none. I would have had him back in a heartbeat.
Sarah: I would have loved Geoff Walker back, especially now with the release of Deveaux. We need some passion in the team and for the team. I think Geoff had that whilst playing for us. There must be a reason as to why either Thommo didn’t want him back or Geoff didn’t want to come back.

4. Which non-Steeler player has impressed you in the EIHL this season?

Fay: Gleason Fournier, Mokshantsev and Saviano
Mark: Calle Ackered of Guildford has been a great pick up for them as has Mokshantsev for the Bears. Those two names stand head and shoulders above the newcomers in terms of players this season. Josh Shalla of the Bears isn't too shabby either.
Sarah: Tough question!! I’m really impressed with the Panthers this year. Lindhagen, Garnett, Mokshantsev to name a few.
Nathan: Luke Ferrara. (we could do with a 3rd/4th liner like him.......... Oh wait, we DID!)

5. How good would it be to have the Continental Cup in Sheffield; and how would you price it if we did host it?

Mark: Would be fantastic if we could land it, another boost for the EIHL itself. Pricing it; I would have day tickets as per a normal game but maybe charge no more than £40 for a full tournament pass. If any fans from other EIHL teams are wanting to attend; make some kind of arrangement so they can watch it.
Fay: It’d be great, but you can’t beat an away Europe trip! I’d leave ticket prices as they are and maybe add a weekend pass at discounted price. Maybe cheaper deal for EIHL season ticket holders too. Free small programs like Rungsted did! And a cake stand. We all loved the cake stand!
Sarah: It would be great!! The travel would be much easier for most fans from all the clubs and hopefully it would be well attended. It would get well advertised by the club and hopefully look north/BBC could get involved. Pricing structure just something similar to the semi finals (can’t remember exactly what I paid) Individual game prices and then a price for the whole 3 days. We got a card in Rungsted so could please ourselves which games we went to. I just hope it isn’t over priced, we won’t get the attendances if it is. I’m thinking maybe £60-£70 for the whole 3 days and each game for £25. Let’s face it, no matter what they charge it won’t please the fans. (Some fans are not pleased with whatever the club are doing at the moment)
Nathan: It would be great for Sheffield and it would be great for the EIHL but I doubt it would get serious media coverage because it's not kick ball but for UK hockey I hope we get it. (even though I still don't quite understand how we are in the finals after playing only 3 games).

I would price it at £10 adult and £5 concessions and £1 for Steelers season ticket holders.

6. Which place(s) would you like to see an EIHL team created in and why?

Sarah: Leeds and because I could walk to the ice rink that they are building although the structure fell down the other week. It’s slow progress is that ice rink that’s for sure!
Mark: Miss having the Vipers, the North East needs a EIHL side up there. That aside, maybe one in Liverpool or Dublin as both are sports-mad cities.
Nathan: A team in Newcastle would be awesome sandwich. Nice and central between middle England and Scotland. Big catchment area. Other than that I miss the Stingrays.
Fay: Leeds for another close rivalry team or Dublin for the trip and possible double header weekend with Belfast!

And that's your soapbox this week.

The Junior Report - Edition 7

Welcome to the second report from the Frozen Steel Junior fan base. Hope you enjoy this as well as the previous one.

In the eyes of a Junior Member this has been a pretty hectic week. With last weekend the Steelers triumphing in Europe coming second in their group to earn a place in the final four teams of the competition. However, in midweek we somehow managed to send Twitter alight with Pollgate yet we vow to never talk about the latter again.

With the Steelers getting thrashed 7-2 in Milton Keynes the night before the Blaze game at home on a Sunday night was an excellent opportunity to patch over those wounds. Brady Ramsay was scratched again for the Steelers, causing a few questions to be raised amongst the Steelers fan base. The first period was the only period with any proper excitement. A spell of three minutes saw the Steelers see past a short benched Coventry side, to gain a vital two points towards winning the league.

An early incident saw Jämtin get checked to the head with Fitzgerald climbing in on Lauwers less than five seconds later, to let him know that hits like that are just not on. That saw both sit 17 minutes for that one particular incident, referee Schmejkal setting the tone for what was to be a very physical game.

The Blaze were punished for dirtiness less than a minute later however. Robert Dowd slotted in at the back post from a feed from Valdix to send the Steelers on their way to a comfortable win. Just moments later, Valdix smashed one into the roof of the goal with Nastiuk getting absolutely no where near it. The Blaze keeper moaned about interference in a hope to get the goal washed out, yet nothing was to come from the claim. That stood upthe game winner, yet another goal from the Steelers came soon after. Fretter was the scorer and he backhanded into the roof of the net after good work from Jämtin out in front. The right man at the right time to slot home. A good returning few games from Colton; and we have completely missed him.

Then against the run of play, the Blaze scored on a breakaway. In the same fashion Manchester did a few weeks back, just a complete misunderstanding in the defensive zone led to Vallerand getting the breakaway and slotting over the shoulder of Mustukovs. 3-1 at the end of the first period. Periods 2,3 weren’t really classics however the Steelers did really well in defence to ensure they didn’t give up their two goal lead. The only bit of pure entertainment was in period three with Danick Paquette losing his cool completely as he pushed the linesman straight in the chest, and can certainly expect a ban coming from this. A two plus ten for abuse of official was given to him.

However, the Steelers pretty much cruised to victory from here with the only thing to take the shine off it was Fitzgerald getting a real whack in the face from a very powerful slap shot in the closing stages. Everyone at the junior section and in the rest of Frozen Steel would like to wish Zack a speedy recovery, as it looks a real nasty one, and only warriors can get up and skate off after that. Hats off to you Zack!

The Week In Steelerland So Far

Welcome to a special article compiled after Tuesday and today's events. Remember these opinions are not that of Sheffield Steelers IHC, they are purely my observations and as a hockey fan since 1980 plus a Steeler since 1991.

Disclaimer above out of the way, read on...

So we have decided on our Challenge Cup quarter final opponents in the new choose-your-opponent quarter final format. We've gone for the common sense option in my eyes by picking the Dundee Stars. This is a smart decision by the Steelers as either of the remaining seven all had varying degrees of risk involved. Granted no team has a divine right to win every game they play, despite people thinking differently, this choice represents the best chance of the Steelers at least making the final four in this much maligned competition.

We have of course to be solid in both games, we can't afford to face a second leg deficit regardless if that is played at home or away. It has similarities with last season's quarter-final match up when we faced Edinburgh over two legs. If the first leg is in Tayside, keep it tight or come away with a lead then finish the job on home ice here. Recipe for success that. A tasty semi-final against either Fife or Cardiff, both which will be difficult, to follow.

Also Steelers have announced that forward Andre Deveaux has been released with immediate effect. To some, it's a shock and a disgraceful decision but to me, I lean to it not being so. When he actually played hockey, he was a decent player with some good skills but unfortunately I personally believe that it all boiled down to a lack of self-discipline. Two incidents in the space of less than seven days in my eyes prove it.

First of all, his reaction to Thommo in Denmark when he appeared to argue with him after his clash with Kurbads Riga's Janis Sprukts. Yeah sure Andre got an unwarranted gouge to the eye from the Latvian which was not punished enough, but to remonstrate with your coach isn't the way to endear yourself particularly when you're still virtually a newcomer to the ranks. Thompson then benched him for the rest of the game as a warning, maybe hinting at saying "Cool your jets Andre. I won't tolerate this type of behaviour" but unfortunately his MK ejection I believe was the last straw and as soon as the weekend was done with then he's out of the door and Steelers are looking for a replacement. Unless it now opens the door for the unlucky Brady Ramsay to cement down a permanent slot in the team with Jonas Westerling probably moving up to centre the third line.

We move on now, like Steelers hockey always does, and reinvent the wheel again.

Today, Wednesday, DoPS (the new incarnation) decided after reviewing the Deveaux in MK incidents that the recently released forward would be banned for six games. Three incidents are referred and it's hard to argue against them. The problem we face from this is that because Andre is no longer a player of ours; the suspension then becomes a team one where we have to sit one import for each of the six matches. This, coupled with the fact we have a few injury problems again, is in my eyes going to make or break the season for us. If we can get through this spell without too much damage and stay in touch with those above then we will have done well. The realist in me thinks it will damage the title hopes and we will be playing a spot of catch-up. All because of one man who couldn't keep his emotions in check. Sad but totally true.

Those are my thoughts, how about you?

Big Match Preview: Dundee (Away)

Welcome to your preview of the next Steelers game.

After a mixed weekend where the boys lost convincingly to Milton Keynes on the road but bounced back to defeat the visiting Coventry Blaze, Steelers are in midweek action to face this team:

It's a lengthy road trip to Tayside to lock horns again with Omar Pacha and his Dundee Stars, the team that Steelers have also chosen to face in the Challenge Cup quarter-finals. It's potentially a banana skin for the boys but they have done well in the games so far this season between the two teams but then again the form book can easily go out of the window.

Stars haven't had a great season so far, and currently lie in 11th place at the time of the game starting tomorrow night. However in their five wins this season they can count Manchester, Belfast and Cardiff amongst them so they shouldn't be discounted too lightly. Team news for the Steelers will definitely see one change, Andre Deveaux was released by the Club today and there are serious doubts over Zack Fitzgerald's participation after the defenceman picked up a nasty puck to the jaw in the closing stages of the Coventry game. Kieran Brown should bolster the bench too.

My prediction? It's going to be a tough game in Tayside and we will have to work hard for this. I'm going for a 4-2 road win though. How about you?

The Junior Report - Edition 6

As usual we have something from our Junior Members. We've got not just one, but two, reports from Sunday's game. Double treat, eh? So we're going to publish one tonight and the other tomorrow.

Hope you enjoy these perspectives.

On Sunday 26th of November the Sheffield Steelers welcomed the Coventry Blaze into 'The House Of Steel' for their 3rd meeting this season. Last time the Blaze were in town the Steelers took the 2 points by beating them 5-2. However, when the met in the SkyDome the Blaze took the 2 points with a 5-1 defeat for the Steelers.

This was the first home game after winning 2 out of the 3 games in Denmark confirming the Steelers place super finals of the Continental Cup. The referee for the game was Jan Schmejkal accompanied by linesmen Paul Staniforth and Ilia Kisil.

The first 5 minutes of the first period were pretty even with just 1 penalty that was called on Coventry's 41, Adam Courchaine for delaying the game at 3:24. No goals came as an outcome of the home side's powerplay. The period really started to heat up 6:16 in when Andreas Jämtin took a stick to  the face and there was no penalty going to be made on the play, Zack Fitzgerald noticed this and didn't like this so went after Blaze's number 7 Dax Lauwers. There was a bit of a punch up against the boards but Fitzgerald came out on top. Schmejkal had a tough decision on his hands: deciding what penalties to give and to who. After a long chat with all the on-ice officials the outcome was, Lauwers received a 2+10 for checking to the head and a further 5 minutes for fighting. Fitzgerald received a 5 minute major penalty for fighting as well as a 2+10 for instigator.

Play returned to 5-on-5 as all penalties were coincidental. The Sheffield fans and team got motivated from this, the chants became louder and the Steelers got themselves on the scoreboard 6:37 into the period. The goal was scored by Robert Dowd with assists coming from Levi Nelson and Andreas Valdix. Luke Ferrara then sat a 2 minute penalty for hooking at 7:24. The Steelers used their 1 man advantage to great effect and after 1:04 had gone on the powerplay they bagged their second of the night, the same line scored this but Valdix buried the puck this time with help from Nelson and Dowd.

The next few minutes were pretty flat and momentum was swinging both ways. At 9:18 the home side scored their 3rd of the night. Colton Fretter was awarded the goal with Tim Wallace and Andreas Jämtin getting the assists. The piece of play before this goal was phenomenal with great work from Wallace to set the goal up.  After a timeout Blaze got on the board than to a goal from Vallerand, assisted Bebris and Robinson. The period ended 3-1 in favour of the home side.

The second period was rather flat with Blaze netminder Kevin Nastiuk keeping his side in it. The final period carried on as the previous period ended. However, some frustration started to show in some players. This became apparent when commotion was caused between Steelers' Colton Fretter and Blaze's Danick Paquette. The initial penalties were that they were both going to sit 2 for roughing but that changed when Paquette pushed one of the linesmen, he was then given a 10 minute misconduct penalty for abuse of an official, he went straight back to the changing room despite this even being timed at 47:45 meaning there was 12:15 remaining in the game.

The final incident in this game was a really worrying one for all in FlyDSA Arena on Sunday as Zack Fitzgerald blocked a slapshot but with his face. An ambulance pulled up to the Arena to take Fitzgerald to the hospital. In post game interviews Paul Thompson expressed that he was worried about Fitzgerald's injury as he claimed there was lots of damage. He was hoping it was just missing teeth and no broken jaw or more damage that that.

Despite the recent injury with Zack the mood was lifted with an incredible and humourous 'Eddy' by a well deserved man of the match, Jonas Westerling. The Sheffield Steelers will travel up to Dundee on Wednesday and will take on the Dundee Stars in a league game. We wish the guys all the best for their away game and wish Fitzy the best and speediest recovery and hope to see him back fit soon.

Steelers extinguish Blaze for a home win

Welcome to the match report from Sunday's game at home to the Coventry Blaze.

After being dismantled by Milton Keynes Lightning on the Saturday, Steelers looked to redeem themselves when they entertained Coventry Blaze at the House Of Steel on Sunday evening. From the side that lost in Buckinghamshire, Steelers were without Brady Ramsay after the centre picked up a knock from that game. However, there was a return for Levi Nelson who missed that game which meant the second line was reunited. Blaze were very short benched as they were without Ryan Dingle and Gustav Ahnelov whilst still looking for a replacement for Garrett Ladd.

The home side started the game with a lot more intensity than they showed at Milton Keynes and with some commitment in front of a crowd of over 6500. The tone was set as early as 6:16 when Andreas Jämtin was the unfortunate recipient of a late hit by Blaze defenceman Dax Lauwers. Zack Fitzgerald took exception to it, and made the Blaze man accountable for his actions. Remarkably when it came to the penalties, referee Schmejkal awarded both players 17 penalty minutes each, Fitzgerald getting a 2+10 for instigation which was a strange decision. It spurred Steelers on though, and they opened the scoring 21 seconds later when Andreas Valdix skated down the left before dishing a perfect pass to Robert Dowd to net from close range: Nelson getting the second helper.

Steelers poured forward for a second and got it at 8:28. With former Steeler Luke Ferrara off for hooking, the home powerplay went to work and a terrific shot from the right circle from Valdix sent the water bottle flying: Dowd and Nelson assisting. However, it clearly enraged Blaze netminder Kevin Nastiuk who complained about a possible man in the crease call to the referee but Schmejkal obviously saw nothing wrong and awarded the goal. Less than a minute later and it became 3-0, Tim Wallace pulled Nastiuk out of position and Colton Fretter tapped home one of the easiest goals he'll score all season long. Blaze called a time out then to try to stem the bleeding and to be honest it got them a foothold in the game, leading scorer Marc-Olivier Vallerand scoring on a break after he managed to outwit Ervins Mustukovs in a duel.

Remarkably that was all the scoring done with and all inside 17:14, but there was still plenty of other things going off in an occasional heated affair. Kevin Noble almost scored a second for the Blaze when he shot wide moments after exiting the box on a holding minor. Jonas Westerling was clearly sticked in the face just after Noble's effort, but it went unpunished. Then almost through the final period, Blaze's Danick Paquette tangled with Fretter and as he was being escorted towards the penalty box: he clearly pushed the linesman out of the way and got a game misconduct for his troubles. That should surely get some kind of ban. Nastiuk was pulled with 2:40 left, having kept Blaze in it with some excellent saves prior, but Steelers stood firm: none more so than Fitzgerald who took a nasty puck to the jaw with less than a minute and half left which caused the tough defenceman to end up at hospital. A much welcome win after a serious bump in the road the night before.

Time for the statistics:

Goals: Steelers 3 Blaze 1

Steelers Scoring: Valdix 1+1, Dowd 1+1, Nelson 0+2, Fretter 1+0, Jämtin 0+1, O'Connor 0+1.

Shots On Goal:  Steelers 31 Blaze 24

Powerplay: Steelers 1 from 5 (20% conversion), Blaze 0 from 4 (0% conversion)

Penalty Minutes called: Steelers 27 Blaze 49

Steelers Goaltender Stats: Mustukovs 23 Saves (486), GAA: 1.00 (2.43), Save Percentage 95.80% (91.50%)

That's Enough Now

Hello everyone.
Firstly, let me begin by thanking you all for your continued support of the blog, the MNL account and more recently the Junior account. The support and praise, and naturally any criticisms and advise, are greatly appreciated as we look to continue both developing and improving as a whole. We have a couple of potential new features and ideas in the works, which are taking some time to finalise and arrange, but if they become a reality we hope you enjoy them. With that said, I should get into the main purpose of this article. One final word of warning, it will probably be a long one and feature a few strong words, so grab a cuppa and strap yourselves in. So, it's been a while since I've written an article for the blog. I was initially going to wait a bit longer in order to do a little mid-season review and look at the team and the players and their performances up to that point in time. Both positive and negative of course. However, recent events over various platforms of social media have brought me out of hiding a little sooner than planned.
Now, by all accounts, this whole situation began in part thanks to a poll that was made on our Junior account. I have stated previously that such a poll should never have taken place on any account that carries the Frozen Steel name. It did not reflect who we are as a collective group of fans and did nothing but show us in a bad light. We have since apologised for the incident and have dealt with it internally.
Off the back of that however, it has caused what can more or less be described as a bit of a social media shitstorm when it comes to having an opinion. Through all the back and forth between fans and club, to me what has been missed is the real issue. The issue, in my opinion, is how some people are portraying/wording/delivering their opinion.
Don't get me wrong, everybody is entitled to an opinion. As David Simms himself once said to me a few years ago, "opinions are like arseholes - we've all got one", which let's be honest, is the truth. We all make a judgement on something and thus form an opinion. That's how life works. The issue is how you express that opinion. Take the events of this past week as a perfect example.
The club has, by most accounts, just enjoyed a successful weekend in Denmark in the Continental Cup and therefore progresses to the Super Final as a result. A terrific achievement for the club and also reflects the continued growth both on and off the ice under Tony Smith's ownership. What we encountered a few days later was something that focused on nothing but the negative. We should have collectively been celebrating the success in Denmark and looking ahead to the weekends upcoming games against Milton Keynes and Coventry Blaze, but we didn't do that, did we?
Instead, we ended up with fans voicing their opinions on a negative minded poll and discussing the polls results, but we then also had one of the players (who incidentally featured by name in the poll) state his opinion on the whole situation. Like I said just above, we are all entitled to our opinions. Whether that is as a paying customer/fan, or a club official, or even one of the players.
For me, Ben O'Connor had every right to state his opinion, both in defence of himself and also in defence of the team he plays for and how he thought it was silly to be focusing on a negative after such a good weekend for the club. He was absolutely right to do so. He was right to call out the Junior account for making the poll. He was right to call out some of the fans for focusing on a negative after such a good weekend. He was absolutely right to reply back at some fans that were addressing him in an aggressive manner over social media. That was the main issue recently, the manner and/or tone in which people expressed their opinions.
The people that cross the line are those that use aggressive language and punctuation. What also is an issue is the whole use of social media and how some people think that because Ben is a professional sportsman, it is unprofessional of him to reply back to fans of the team he plays for in the way he did. Yes, I'm well aware that part of that statement makes me a hypocrite as I am using a form of social media myself for this very article and also when I do my Twitter updates on the MNL account, but just hear me out here.
Social media is a wonderful thing. It is a terrific platform for people to use every day in all sorts of ways. That said, in Ben O'Connor’s case, something needs to be made clear. When he (or any player or member of staff for that matter) is out there on that ice, or in the gym training with the rest of the team, he is a professional sportsman. Away from that environment, he is a human being. There is a clear and definitive difference. Unfortunately, social media is a very grey area. When is he a sportsman on social media? When is he a human being on social media? The answer to that is very much divided and there is no real definitive answer.
Now that whole "Pollgate" situation got seemingly put to bed towards the latter part of last week and we had the two games at the weekend to focus on. Unfortunately, as a result of the harrowing defeat in Milton Keynes, along with it came a lot more criticism and once again some of it was phrased/worded/stated inappropriately, which has led us to today and this evenings press release through the Sheffield Star.
We once again find ourselves in a situation where a club official was essentially calling out the club’s fans over their opinions and once again (judging by current social media reaction to said press release) what seems to be getting lost in the article is the actual point that is trying to be made. The point that is trying to be made is how those that are using strong language or an aggressive tone towards playing and club officials are the ones crossing the line.
I get what Paul Thompson is saying in principal. There is no way players or club staff should be directly tagged in tweets or Facebook posts etc. where they are getting slammed by people in an overly aggressive manner. The same goes for league officials for what it is worth. For example, say I post a tweet saying that I think "Player A is a sack of shit and should be released asap" and go on to say that "I have seen more effort from a baby trying to have a poo" and then go and then compound that further by tagging said player in that very post. That would be, and is, completely uncalled for.
The right way to post something, in my opinion, would be as follows: "Player A didn't have the best of nights tonight. You can see he wasn't happy with things out there. We all have those off nights though. We know what they are capable of. More than confident it will just be one of those things. Go get them next game, you got this!" and that looks a heck of a lot better. If that player is also tagged in that post, they'll see that and be more inclined to think "yeah, that was an off night, but yeah I do have a lot more to give, thanks for the morale boost" and that sort of attitude effects professional sportsmen in a much better way than telling them they are shit at the job they are paid to do, for a team that they care about, in a sport that they have grown up having a lifelong passion for.
If you want proof of a positive attitude from fans having a more beneficial effect on the players on the ice, look at last year’s Playoff Final. As fans we let everything out during those overtime periods. You could see it physically and emotionally lifting the players and spurring them on. Take a look at Denmark as another example. 3-0 down against Rungsted when it all looked doom and gloom. Then we get a break and convert and pull it back to 3-1. Right after that the travelling fans were superb. Cheering non-stop, and I mean non-stop. We made that building in Rungsted ours and we made sure the boys on the ice could hear us. Within a few minutes it was 3-3. By the end of the weekend we have won two games and got progression to the Super Final. How do the team repay the travelling fans? By coming into the fan zone just down the road and coming in and saying thank you and socialising with the fans and celebrating with them.
You can even take Saturdays loss in Milton Keynes as another example. 4-0 down and by most accounts playing poorly. Then, we get a glimmer of hope by making it 4-1. It lifted the fans a bit and it gave the boys a little boost. Then all of a sudden, it's 4-2 as the club’s long-time captain gets a shorthanded goal. Suddenly, the fans are loud, the home support is quiet. The bench is lifted. We go at them again for a couple more shifts and after one of those shifts, Jonas Westerling skates past the travelling fans and starts lifting his arms up at the fans while shouting "come on, come on, come on!"
Now, why does he do that? Simple. As an experienced player, he knows that support and particularly that volume of support in both numbers and voice seriously lifts a bench up. Sadly, on that occasion MK went on to go and run away with the game again, but there was a professional doing something very simple to try and get a much more beneficial result. Sometimes in life the tiniest things make the biggest difference, whether it is positive or negative, and that should be remembered. Then I look at this evening's article in The Star and all I can think of is this. Is that article in The Star really necessary?
For me, it's not. Sure, I understand exactly where Paul Thompson is coming from in his comments, but does he need to be speaking in an article about such comments made on social media? As I said, I don't think so. Likewise, does Bob Westerdale really need to do such an article for the paper and release it? Again, for me, no. Don't get me wrong, Bob Westerdale is a seriously good asset to our club and has been for a serious number of years now, but I just don't see how that article benefits anybody in the bigger picture. All that social media business took place a number of days ago now, so why are we bringing it up again? All it has seemingly achieved, judging by social media reaction, is yet again more of a divide between the fan base and the club. It all just seems completely unnecessary to me, but that's just my opinion.
This isn't the first time in recent memory this has happened either. I remember at some point in the last couple of seasons I took to the podcast and called for the unity between club officials and the fans. Again, it all started because of some members of the fan base being overly aggressive in how they expressed their opinions, and in some cases, making the players and staff aware of them because of directly tagging them in the comments.
Why the heck, further down the line, are we back to making the self same mistakes? Why are we starting to go back and forth at each other again? It's completely unnecessary. This very article shouldn't even be necessary, but here I am repeating myself from previous seasons gone by, because like the rest of you I damn well care about this club and very much its image.
There are people on both sides, fans and club, that could do with bucking their ideas up a bit and for all manner of reasons as well. I'm all for you all having your opinions, but think about how you're going about it. Again, that seems very hypocritical of me, as I've put my foot in my mouth on more than one occasion, but this niggling between club and fans has simply got to stop. It's tiresome and we are all much better than this. Let's just put the negativity of the past week or so behind us and for once just damn well leave it there.
Some of you may be reading this and agreeing with me. Likewise, some of you may be thinking this article is complete tosh. Some of you may both agree and disgaree in part. Some of you many just think I'm a complete prick that's talking above his station. Guess what. You're entitled to think the way you do, and if you want to express that as such, then go ahead and be my guest, but for the love of everything keep it flippin' civil because having opinions expressed in an uncivil manner has been the root cause of all of this.
It benefits all of us if it is kept in a civil manner, both fans and club as a whole. This isn't the first time I have said this, but I damn sure hope it's the last time I say this. We are much better than this, so let's be better than this. Unite. Become one. Be a force to be reckoned with. Be one orange army. We all love this club. So, let's go out there and damn well show it to each other and the rest of the league.
I'll see you on the road.
Alan

Lightning strike seven past sorry Steelers

Time for our match report from Saturday night's game at Milton Keynes.

After their European adventure in Denmark, Steelers returned to the bread and butter of the Elite League action. They were looking to record an away win and close in those above them, but standing in their way were Elite League newcomers Milton Keynes Lightning who are coached by GB national coach Pete Russell. Steelers were missing Levi Nelson who was not fit enough to play after his knock in Rungsted against Kurbads. Colton Fretter made his first appearance in the line-up after completing his six game suspension whilst Jonas Westerling was looking to build on his European show. Lightning were at full strength which meant that veteran Ashley Tait iced against one of his old clubs, and former Nottingham Panthers netminder Miika Wiikman was between the pipes.

It was a frenetic start with Lightning looking very dangerous on the counter with pace and putting the Steelers defence under pressure. Fretter almost marked his return to the side with a goal but Wiikman denied him with a pad save at the near post, Lightning then went up the other end of the ice and Christian Isackson skated around the back of the net before spotting Tommy Mele arriving in the slot; and the American rifled a shot past Ervins Mustukovs. Brady Ramsay then a had tilt with Alex Forbes as tempers started to boil up nicely, followed by another confrontation between Andre Deveaux and Lightning captain Kevin King. Deveaux picked up a double minor for roughing and a ten minute misconduct from referee Tom Darnell for his part; whilst King a single roughing minor.

With the game headed into the last five minutes of first period, Steelers were defending a too many men minor when Lightning scored a second goal. Francis Verreault-Paul with a shot from the left circle that into arrowed home. King went close with a shot that appeared to strike the post as the home side started to dominate proceedings. However, the game saw multiple penalties handed out by the referee, Steelers definitely losing their cool for sure with Deveaux leaving the game with a 2+10 check to the head penalty early in the second. With it being his second misconduct of the match; the Canadian centre took no further part in the game. Lightning upped the pressure and scored a third at 28:38 with a ripper of a blue line shot from former Cardiff Devils defenceman Carl Hudson. King made it 4-0 with 5:18 left in the second when Fretter was dispossessed by Hudson and he set up his skipper to light the lamp shorthanded.

There must have been some harsh words in the Steelers locker room at the end of the second as they came out with renewed vigour and put the pressure back on the home side. Having had a "goal" washed out on the end of period buzzer, Steelers snapped Wiikman's planned shutout as Liam Kirk stuffed home a loose puck to net 45:54. Then as Zack Fitzgerald sat a slashing minor, captain Jonathan Phillips scampered away down the wing to reduce the arrears to a two goal game. Just under seven and a half minutes were left when Lightning made it 5-2; a scramble in front of Mustukovs and Mele poked in his second of the night. Steelers were outshooting their opponents but on their tenth powerplay of the night, Lightning scored a sixth with 4:18 left thanks to former Stingray, Panther and Devil Guillaume Doucet. It was a third powerplay strike against the league's best penalty kill. Then just to rub it even more, Mele broke in with 24 seconds left and with all the confidence of man wanting to score a hat-trick: he did just that to net Lightning's seventh.

Big Match Preview: Milton Keynes and Coventry

Welcome once more everybody for the preview of this weekend's action for the Steelers.

After the European Tour to the land of bacon and the Little Mermaid, also known as Denmark and Copenhagen respectively, it's time to get back to the bread and butter of Elite League for the Steelers. They currently lie in fourth place in the League standings, five points behind the leaders who are those Bears from down the M1. However, with hockey being the way it acts, that could easily change at the click of some fingers. There's no reason to actually panic.

This weekend is another testing one though with games that we could easily come unstuck with.

Saturday night and the Steelers are on the road, it's a visit to this place:

It's our first visit to Buckinghamshire, or Concrete Cow City aka Milton Keynes in the Elite League ever. Our last visit there was way back in 1996 in the final season of the then British Premier League; the following season was the initial season of the BISL. Back then the Lightning were known as the Milton Keynes Kings for whom a certain stripey played a single game for in 1998-99. No names but he does spend a lot of time out of the country with work and officiating if that helps.

Yet both games in Milton Keynes in 1995-96 ended in draws. A high scoring 8-8 followed by a 3-3. Our record overall there in all games is a very impressive 7-0-2. So by rights, the form book should point to a road win for the Steelers. As you know, it means naff all. Lightning pushed us to a 4-3 win at Ice Sheffield earlier in the season and are coached by GB coach Peter Russell. They have experienced EIHL players in former Panthers netminder Miika Wiikman and former Cardiff Devils Carl Hudson, Guillaume Doucet and Denny Kearney. Impressive Lewis Hook is a hot prospect reckoned to a GB internationalist sooner rather than later. Oh and there's also Matt Nickerson...

After Saturday, the House of Steel welcomes back the European heroes for the first time since they went on their Danish crusade. Our opponents are this merry bunch:

Yes it's the Coventry Blaze. We can admit for sure that this is a bit of a better team than last season's but then again that team flattered to deceive. The roster has seen a number of changes, obviously Matt Marquardt's move here is well known but no longer at Coventry are Brian Stewart (Guildford), Robin Bergman (Rungsted), cousins Almeida and Syner (back in North America) and Russ Cowley (retired) to name some departures. However, they are still as inconsistent as always and can turn in one great performance followed by one absolute shocker.

Play to our strengths, we are able to beat them convincingly although Kevin Nastiuk is in some eyes (mine included): an upgrade on that behemoth known as Brian whose meltdowns were the stuff of comedy gold. Perhaps he should form a double act with Omar Pacha...

My predictions? Steelers to edge the Milton Keynes game 3-2 after overtime, then to see off the Blaze rather comfortably back in S9 by 5-2. I'll take a four point weekend but it might have to be a bit a battle in the trenches to get it especially in MK and if Wiikman is on form.
