Steelers Capture Free-Scoring Mathieu Roy

Over the last week, I think Gerad Adams has been able to replace the goals of Jeff Legue and Stefan Meyer.

(Obviously no one actually knows what is happening with Meyer at the moment, but as it stands he isn’t a Steeler.)

In addition to Mike Forney last week, Steelers head coach has acquired the services of free-scoring Canadian left winger Mathieu Roy.

At the age of 27-years-old, Roy has spent the last five seasons at ECHL side Florida Everblades, and spent the previous three season as Captain for the East Coast side. He also led his team to the Kelly Cup championship as well as leading the ECHL in goals and points just two seasons ago.

Mathieu has been putting up some very good points: in a total of 374 regular season games for the Florida Everblades, he racked up an amazing 292 points (133+159), and in post-season games played 44 games accumulating 30 points (17+13).

You can look at stats all you like: they tell you a lot about a player, and it’s nice to see we're signing a player that is consistently racking up the points at what level he is playing. Even looking at his stats now, going back 9 years when he played in the QMJHL for Acadie-Bathurst Titans, in a total of 82 games that season he scored 123 points (57+66). To me, it doesn’t matter what level that is still very impressing none-the-less.

What can we expect of Mathieu Roy? Listening to an interview earlier, he described that he likes to score points - whether that’s by scoring the goals himself or setting them up.

He also likes to get on the powerplay and play a two-way game - he said he likes to be around the net and helping out the D with blocking shots, and it’s something we're going to see.

Mathieu was originally signed to go and play in Norway, but complications with his team made him a free agent again, at which point Gerad pounced at the opportunity to sign.

Here is what Gerad Adams had to say (courtesy of the Sheffield Star).

This is a big signing for us - a three year East Coast captain, one who led his team to a Kelly Cup championship. This is a forward that also led the ECHL in goals and points just two seasons ago - a first team All-Star. Mathieu had signed in Norway but there were problems with his club and once we knew we had a chance of signing him we jumped."
“Alongside Mike Forney our forward lines are coming together, we have two more forwards and two more at the back end to find and we are well underway with our search. Our policy for waiting is working.”

The Steelers also confirmed that Roy will be wearing #15 Jersey for the 2014/2015 EIHL season.

With a number of big players from last season’s roster leaving this summer, I’ve noticed a lot of fans getting worried and scared about whether we’d have a team that could compete, and also getting impatient with the lack of signings.

But, even Adams said don’t worry, they're going to take their time to ensure we get the right guys and we have more than a month till the actual season begins.

All we need now is two forwards and two D-men if I’m correct as well as a back-up goaltender - but the word going round the most is that I believe we will be re-signing both Geoff Woolhouse and Andy Jaszczyk.

So guys. what a signing!! Got to be happy with that one, and if you’re not then seriously don’t bother! I myself can see his name on the back of a few jerseys this year and like it was announced - Hewy has beard competition!

Thanks for reading guys, the roster is coming together and I think with this addition our title chances just increased massively!!
