Match Report: 16.11.2014 - Steelers v Clan EIHL

Sunday 16th November 2014 – Sheffield Steelers (10-3-0) v Braehead Clan (11-4-1) @ Motorpoint Arena. Face-off: 5pm, Elite League

Sheffield Steelers – 4
Tyler Mosienko (3) – 1st, 2nd (2)
Jay Latulippe – 3rd

Braehead Clan – 1
Scott Pitt – 2nd

League Leaders came to Sheffield on the back of a 6-2 defeat to the Fife Flyers but Sheffield were on the back of a 4-2 win against Belfast and were looking for a four point weekend.

It was the league leaders that started the game the better of the two going very close through Trimm, Keith, Haywood and Davies who was all testing Doyle in the early stages and Sheffield were riding their luck at times but hesitant play by the visitors almost let in Robert Dowd but had no one in support but at 6:07 Sheffield took the lead with their first shot of the game when Tyler Mosienko picked up a loose puck in front of goal with Dowd and Phillips driving the net he turned and fired a wrist shot of the post and past Jones for 1-0. It could have been 2-0 soon after as Fretter sent a puck through the crease and Forney couldn’t get his stick on it and then soon after it was Fretter again on the left who through another puck on goal and Roy hit it out of mid-air but Jones got his pads in the way. It was a very physical game by both sides as there were lots of hits thrown. Sheffield got the first powerplay of the game which turned out to be their only one but Kyle Jones saved brilliantly of Fretter and then Dowd and then the visitors got their own powerplay as Eddy was called for holding and they was unlucky not to be level when they was driving the net hard and Doyle found himself on the floor and the puck slid through the goal mouth and away from goal and Sheffield took a 1-0 lead into the break.

Braehead started the second period in the same fashion they started 1st very fast paced and was level with 24 seconds when Scot Pitt slotted the puck past Doyle on the forehand from just in front of him. The physicality of the 1st period continued into the second as Thomas laid a big hit on Davies and Frank was lucky not to be penalised for a slash on Dowd which forced the Steelers man to skate off in some pain but he would return. The returning Stefan Meyer was trying to find a way to give his team the lead but as the Clan forward went down the left hand side he was soon put on the Ice by Kohn who was putting business first. Sheffield took the lead again on 31:14 after a fantastic shift by Mosienko to keep the puck in the zone Cullen Eddy picked up the puck on the blue line and his slap shot bounced back of the end boards onto the stick of Mosienko who fired into the open goal at Jones’s left hand post for 2-1 and in the very next attack it was 3-1 when Mosienko scored his hat trick when to the right of Kyle Jones the Steelers forward fired his back hand past Jones timed at 31:43 and it was probably a goal the Clan netminder would want back. Braehead should have pulled a goal back after Mosienko out smarted Meyer the former Steeler man won back the puck on a turnover and a played 1-2 with his line mate but it was intercepted by O’Connor to keep the Steelers two goal lead. Braehead were still throwing the hits but Sheffield was giving as good as they got and took their two goal lead into the second break.
End of the 2nd Period: Sheffield Steelers 3–1 Braehead Clan
Shots on Goal: Steelers 9–8 Clan

Third period got underway and an early penalty on Latulippe gave Braehead two minutes on the man advantage and was able to get it set up but were struggling to find the shooting lanes as Sheffield kept them to the edges. Both teams were going at each other, throwing shots and goals throwing hits at each other and there were a few questionable decisions by Neil Wilson the referee who let the game run but let a little too much go at times. Braehead went close again through two former Steelers in Esders and Meyer but Doyle stood up tall to deny them. Mosienko was having one hell of a night and had another fantastic shift in the Clan zone as the visitors just couldn’t get the puck off him and eventually helped Phillips form a fantastic save out of Jones. Sheffield finished the scoring on 57:43 after a dreadful mistake by the visitors ended with Latulippe getting his stick on the puck and slotting it through the legs of Kyle Jones which finished off a good weekend for the Steelers. A 4-1 win against the league leaders and a 4 point weekend with an even bigger weekend coming up next week.
