Sunday 9th November 2014 – Sheffield Steelers (8-3-0) v Fife Flyers (7-6-2) @ Ice Sheffield. Face-off: 6pm, Elite League

So it was the night after the drumming in Nottingham! Would the Steelers react in the right manner?

Sheffield Steelers – 6
Mathieu Roy – 1st PP
Michael Forney – 1st PP
Tyler Mosienko – 2nd
Tyler Mosienko – 2nd
Colton Fretter – 2nd
Michael Forney – 3rd

Fife Flyers – 1
Jordan Futon – 1st

The game at Ice Sheffield got underway and it started in an unusual manner as the Steelers were playing rather safe, scared of making a mistake after the previous night’s result, despite taking an early penalty which they would successfully it was the visitors who took the lead on 4:06 when a lucky bounce off the boards left Jordan Fulton 1v1 to the left of Doyle and the Fife forward fired a low wrist shot past the stick of Doyle for a 1-0 lead. It would have been very easy for Sheffield to let their head dropped but they stayed professional and wasn’t behind for too long when a second penalty this time called on Fife’s Thomas Muir put Sheffield back on the man advantage and Sheffield made it count with O’Connor fired a slap shot from the blue line and Mathieu Roy was able tip the puck past Regan from in front to level the score with the goal timed at 5:28. The goal scorer would then be sent to spend some time in the box after hooking down a Fife player which caused a reaction from some of the Fife players, the Flyers powerplay wouldn’t last too long as they’d soon be 4v4 for too many men and with Roy out the box and Sheffield back on the man advantage the Steelers went on the attack and on 8:22 Mathieu Roy threw the puck in front of goal and top goal scorer Mike Forney re-directed the puck under Regan for a 2-1 score line and a second powerplay goal. At 10:11 in the 1st period Latulippe was called for Interference and Fife thought they scored on the man advantage only for it to be waved off after Doyle made a save to the left of him and the puck rebounded up high above the crossbar only for it to be battered down into the goal but the referee Mike Hicks said no goal as the stick was above the crossbar when the puck was struck. Both teams would close in the remainder of the period but both Kevin Regan and Frank Doyle would save brilliantly but Sheffield would take a 2-1 lead into the 1st intermission.
End of the 1st Period: Sheffield Steelers 2–1 Fife Flyers

Sheffield started the second period on the powerplay but wouldn’t be able to add their tally but they did have a goal waved off themselves as Forney was deemed to have kicked in the puck but the score would remain 2-1 as Dowd who was frustrated all night couldn’t find a way past Regan from the doorstep. There would be end to end play at times as Fleming, Chaumont and Home all went close as Dowd was denied again followed by Mosienko but on 29:51 Sheffield had the goal in the back of the goal but the officials went to review it  as Cullen Eddy skated down the right only to see his back hand shot saved by Regan and Mosienko was able to get the touch on the rebound and put the puck across the goal line only for Nickerson to clear it quickly but Hicks along with the officials confirmed the puck had crossed the line and Sheffield now had a 3-1 lead. O’Connor would be next to go close as he put high and wide from an open goal it would very soon after be 4-1 to the Steelers after Jonathan Phillips playing his 501st game skated down the right before firing a wrist shot towards Regan but no one know where the puck was and Mosienko was able to jab it home from the scramble in front of Regan’s goal with the goal timed at 33:14. Fife almost pulled a goal back when Scott Fleming was denied from just in front and Fife couldn’t get hold of the rebound and allowed Sheffield to skate it out and that proved vital when at 35:17 Mosienko worked hard in the corner passed to Phil Hill at the point who slid the puck over to his left who stick handled the puck around Regan and in at his near post for a 5-1 lead a very similar goal to what Jonathan Phillips scored a couple of season ago versus Blaze. Fife continued to go close but Doyle was in great form and was catching a lot that was thrown at him. Dowd was then to be frustrated one final time in the period as Dowd had the puck on his stick at the back door and shot high and wide of the open goal with his head in his hands but still Sheffield took a 5-1 lead into the break.
End of the 2nd Period: Sheffield Steelers 5–1 Fife Flyers
Shots on Goal: Steelers 19–10 Flyers

Sheffield started the powerplay on the man advantage and it was a period completely controlled by the Steelers as they only allowed one shot on Doyle which came from a Fulton backhand in the last couple of minutes of the game but in the early stages Sheffield got to work creating chance after chance and Kevin Regan was really standing on his head as he made save after save as all three lines of the Steelers just kept on coming at them, Fife was letting Sheffield come at them  and seemed to lose their discipline as they gave up several penalties but their penalty kill was up for the task and worked hard to clear their lines. Sheffield completed the scoring at 57:22 when Mike Forney got his second of the game from behind the goal as he put his shot in off the back of Kevin Regan. A terrible period by the Flyers who allowed 20 shots on Regan and only managing one on Doyle but in that period Regan only conceded one a very good performance by the Fife netminder but they would be leaving Sheffield empty handed after a 6-1 defeat.
