SIHA Roundup - Good Weekend

Ice and Slice reports back on a hat trick of victories for the Academy teams this weekend.

Sheffield Senators faced a home double header this weekend against Deeside Dragons on Saturday followed by the visit of Coventry Blaze NIHL on Sunday for what were two very different games but both games resulting in 5-1 wins for the Sens.

Sens got off to a great start with some good spells of pressure in and around Deeside’s net but it took a cracker of a shot from just inside the blue line from Sam Hurst to open the scoring; a shot that left Dragons netminder Cox absolutely no chance timed at 4.59. Senators enjoyed the better of what was a pretty evenly matched first period.

The second period got underway pretty much as the first had done but this time the pressure on Dragons goal paid off with an early strike from Nathan Britton assisted Tom Humphries on 20.30. Senators couldn’t quite press home their early dominance and should have increased their lead but as the period progressed Deeside became a little more adventurous but solid defending restricted the Dragons to just four shots. However one of those shots found its way into Sens goal, a powerplay goal scored by James Parsons imagine that Senators would have been disappointed going into the period break 2-1 up.

Into the third period and Senators stepped it up a few notches to dominate the period. They looked comfortable on the puck and the few times Deeside did threaten, Sens were on their game to break up any attack on their goal. Nathan Britton added two goals, the first timed at 45.32; the second which was his hat-trick goal and a beauty too was timed at 53.17 with Nathan showing great skill and awareness to pick his spot to fire an unstoppable shot past Cox.

Senators, who also had a goal washed out for high sticks with the puck coming off the high stick of a Deeside player into the goal, saw the period out by playing sensible hockey to both thwart and frustrate their opponents.  Whilst Dragons enjoyed a late rally they pressed forward in search for a goal on the powerplay but lost possession as a loose puck found Sergevs “Stevie” Jegorovs who calmly passed to Josh Gent who showed a great deal of tenacity to break and score a good short-handed goal on 58.51 to make the score, which was the final score too, Senators 5 Deeside Dragons 1.

Onto Sunday and Senators secured their second 5-1 victory of the weekend, this time over Coventry Blaze NIHL. After a scrappy start, Sens enjoyed a nice little spell of pressure that yielded two goals which arguably should have been more but the game became scrappy again with neither team finding any sort of rhythm to their play with countless mistimed or misplaced passes making it interesting if anything else but it wasn’t particularly pleasant on the eye at times. Mike Mawer & Nathan Britton scored Senators goal early on in the period to give Sens a deserved edge in the game although Blaze had fired a couple of warning shoots to remind Sens that they had a game on their hands.

Senators stepped it up a gear with a more intense game and at times were camped in Blazes defensive zone with Coventry at times struggling to clear the puck. But they deserve credit, because some smart defending and sound netminding did keep the score down. Josh Gent & Paul Lofthouse ensured Sens went into the period brak 4-0 to the good but once again, it could and should have been more. Despite Senators dominance in this period Coventry nearly hit back on a couple of occasions but the post came to Senators rescue to keep their 4-0 advantage intact which was also aided by an alert Bob Browne in Sens goal.

It’s arguable that Sens may have sat back a little but Coventry certainly came out stronger for the final period and Sens had to call on Bob Browne to make the saves to keep the score at 4-0. Sens had their chances too but the intensity from the previous period wasn’t as high but they still looked comfortable and in control despite Blazes best efforts. “Stevie” Jegorovs put the game to bed when he fired in to make it 5-0 at 48.15 as Blaze continued to work hard with their efforts rewarded on 56.54 with a good goal, well taken too by Phil Pollok who made no mistake after seeing his team earlier have a goal washed out for a man in the crease.

That made it 5-1 to Sens which was also the final score in which was a decent game in the end; well once the first period was out of the way to see Sens bag a valuable 4 points from the weekend that sees them cement their place in second spot in the league table.

Sheffield Sabres 14’s B ensured a SIHA treble with a hard fought road win up in Whitley Bay. Max Hurt cancelled out Whitley’s opening goal but they were soon back in front however Sabres went on the rampage to take the game to Whitley which saw them not just equalise but take a remarkable 7-2 lead including a couple from Ben O’Brien and an Ethan Mockford hat-trick to put Sabres well and truly in command. However Whitley weren’t having any of it and managed to pull it back to 7-5. Luke Watson gave Sheffield a bit of breathing space to make it 8-5, only for Whitley to score again to make it 8-6 but Sabres hung in there to claim a great victory.
