Match Report: 15.3.2015 - Devils v Steelers EC/EIHL


Sunday 15th March 2015 – Cardiff Devils (31-13-4) v Sheffield Steelers (33-12-4) @ Big Blue Tent. Face-off: 6pm, Erhardt Conference/Elite League

Sheffield scored the first goal of the game at 2:44 when Forney was to the left Bowns with the puck before play a backhanded pass to Mathieu Roy who slotted the puck under Bowns from just in front for 1-0. The lead didn’t last for too long when at 3:32 Jake Morissette found the equaliser when the Devils forward tucked in at the back door. Cardiff took the lead at 5:14 while shorthanded when a smart play to Joey Martin put him on the breakaway and he went forehand and backhand and putting it through the legs of Unice with it just creeping over the line for 2-1. It wouldn’t be long till it was 3-1 when at 10:31 it was Joey Martin again on the breakaway and his managed to get his shot off firing straight through the glove of Josh Unice. That’s how it stayed going into the 1st Interval.

Cardiff started the second period on the power play and it was the perfect start for the home side when Brent Walton skated into the Sheffield zone un-challenges before firing a nice snap shot told shelf over the shoulder of Josh Unice at 20:23 for 4-1. Cardiff managed to kill a 4 minute power play for the Steelers where they didn’t give the visitors any time on the puck and as they returned to five skaters they struck a killer blow at 26:47 scoring their 5th goal from Matthew Myers who shot from the point where he was all alone past Unice who was certainly having an off night. Cardiff went into the 2nd interval 5-1 up and was looking likely to close in on the league leaders.

Third period got underway and Cardiff were soon awarded a powerplay but it was Sheffield that made it count shorthanded when Mathieu Roy worked his way onto a breakaway from his own zone and fired his shot early and low past Bowns at 40:51 for 5-2. Cardiff scored their final goal of the night at 46:11 when Andrew Lord re-directed from just in front of Unice but it was Steelers who finished off the nights scoring at 54:17 when they pulled a 3rd goal back through Michael Forney on the power play when the Steelers forward finished off at the back door. Cardiff won the game 6-3 but results elsewhere meant Steelers remained top going into the final weekend with the chance to win the league still in their own hands.
