Five Things - New Year - w/e 3 January 2016
It's that time of the week again, time for a new year and another new five things from last week:
1> Decent enough weekend – I think most coaches would settle for 5 points from 6 in three days, especially as two games were away from home, but given the opposition, and the nightmare skid the Caps have been on, then anything less than all six is very disappointing. The league is so tight I wonder if these results against Coventry and Edinburgh will be our Achilles heel.
2> Capital results – 18 goals and four points for us, 17 goals and six points for them in our four games. Edinburgh are capturing points against many teams, but don’t think many will be worse than that.
3> Jumping in – Seems we’ve switched again from a defensive sieve in November, to tightly regulated play in December, to our D shooting on sight in January. 8 from 13 goals over the long weekend came from the blue-liners – which is probably just as well with two key forwards out.
4> Winter Classic – It was a tough choice between a trip to Altringham, or an NHL TV fest on New Year’s Day. I chose the warmer option, and was delighted with the way the Canadiens played. Shame only Rask and Beleskey showed up for the Bruins, but I enjoyed it even if the weather wasn’t really Winter and it wasn’t really a Classic.
5> New Signing – As reported everywhere except the Steelers website it seems certain that we’ve signed Conny Strömberg as forward cover for Frets ( who is seemingly out for another six weeks or so). Conny comes from Denmark and previously the Allsvenskan, so no doubt it’s another Thommo connection that’s secured the deal. At 40 his best is probably behind him, but it’s not without precedent Jagr’s 43 and Ling’s 41 so let’s hope he’s still got enough left in the tank. Welcome to Sheffield, and remember Gordie Howe didn’t retire until he was 52!
Final thought is to be glad we’re not part of the Edinburgh back-office staff as despite their best efforts on the ice and lots of good scalps taken, then only getting 559 through the doors on Sunday must have been a horrific reward.
With depressing news in the EPL, then there might be increasing pressure from Guildford and / or Telford to take the Caps place and relieve that drain on the EIHL coffers, as with the Bees and Phoenix in financial trouble, and the Pirates tanking on the ice, then the EPL isn’t looking like a great home for such relatively strong clubs. New conferences anyone?
