We're off and running for 16/17 after our pre-season opener against the Aalborg Pirates, so it's time to reflect on the first five things we've learnt this season.
2 - Decent enough start. It's hard to predict based on a couple of friendlies, but Aalborg seemed to be decent opposition, and we seemed to have the upper-hand, so all looks well. I loved watching Moose in his first game back, and had just started thinking about the SO before he let one in with five to go - so that one's on me!
3 - The seventh defenseman. We seemed to pair Ratchuk (feisty little chap isn't he) + Phillips, Fitzy + Franzon (who was my MOM), and then rotate Ben with either Sarich or Bjorklund. I thought Bjorklund was touted as a big minute player, so let's hope he's OK, as I'd have hoped that Davey was our 7th defender, and not an import. Watch this space I guess.
4 - First timers. It was great to see Liam and Cole get their first shifts, and we all hope that's the start of a great career here. The imports are great, but cheering on local lads is something else entirely and it's awesome that the team are beginning to invest in the local youth.
5 - Looking forward to the CHL. These are the most exciting games in the season for me as we get to see something different, as top European teams come to play competitive matches against our boys. Premier Sports seem to have all four games live, so we shouldn't miss a minute. HV71 (with Chris Abbott who played for Lulea v the Panthers) and then Salzberg away makes a hectic and awesome first week of action. Can't wait.
I'll leave you with one final thought - there's never a dull week in Steelers media is there? Fatagate came from nowhere as Drew seemed to suddenly remember an old gripe with the management from a couple of years ago. With previous owners I wouldn't have been surprised if there was something to this, but although it will give certain bloggers some fun at our expense I'd be amazed if Tony's team have done anything underhand. Misunderstandings happen, and sometimes people disagree as to what's owed. I'd hope it could be cleared up in private rather than spiralling into a media spat, but I guess that's not how it's done now. Shame to end the piece with this item, and I'll try to make sure my abiding memory is that goal that won the PO final rather than this - Goertzen to Fata GOAL :)
