Welcome once more to a report on the latest Steelers home game; written by one of our Junior Members. Hope you enjoy...
On Sunday the 3rd December the Sheffield Steelers took on the MK Lightning at home, in front of a crowd of just over 5,000 fans. It was vital the Steelers responded well to a disappointing defeat in Nottingham the night previously, the Steelers losing 4-1 to a Nottingham team who are scarily looking good. The fun is hopefully over for them as they’re starting to scare people that they might win the league for the third time in about 50 years. However that said they look relentless, and it is almost a given that they would beat us at home on a Saturday night. Our opening goal came from the stick of Levi Nelson, but the Steelers capitulated and fell to four unanswered goals.
Onto the Sunday night game, a game that needed a response, and that’s what the fans got. No idea how it was a 6-1 scoreline, however MK only have themselves to blame for taking too many penalties. The Steelers were though relentless on the powerplay all night long. The opening goal came from John Armstrong, he skated down the middle of the ice to roof a backhander past Wiikman from close range.
Wiikman was looking strong all night, however shipping four goals on his return to the arena the second of the four coming from a rebound after good work in front from Jämtin the puck finally found the stick of the legend himself, Colton Fretter. Which gave the Steelers a 2-0 lead. The Steelers went on the powerplay again, and did it lead to a goal? Yes. This proved to be an MK short handed goal though. Essery was credited with the marker, and it wasn't against the run of play as it was what MK deserved, but this proved to be their only goal of the game. 2-1.
It is fair to say Matt Nickerson is a big body, and provides one hell of a screen in front of goal. However, he probably shouldn’t use this quality in front of his own netminder. Wiikman was still looking for this one as it absolutely flew past him courtesy of a big slapper from Matheson. Steelers back on top, and therefore took advantage with a two goal lead going into the final period.
The third period was good to watch from a Steelers fan perspective. We never really hit top gear, and were playing at half pace. Yet against teams like MK, who were already beaten at this point, you can certainly afford coast around a little. Which is how the Steelers managed to extend their lead. Great work from Nelson fed Robert Dowd to slot underneath Wiikman for the fourth time in this game. That proved to be the end of the keepers game, and he was replaced by the MK backup.
Two goals from Roy late in the period were what extended the lead, one goal being a wrister from the top of the right hand circle, on of the goals being a tap in from a backpost feed, and certainly made it look more convincing than it realistically was, however you cannot fault the performance of the team.
We move onto next weekend, as we face Braehead away on Friday night. Then the Giants at home on Sunday. Which to say the least, could be a little bit physical if the last meeting is anything to go by...
