Welcome to our preview of the next set of Steelers games.
The Continental Cup is over with, and it's now back to the proverbial bread and butter of the domestic action. Steelers face two teams this weekend at the opposite end of the Elite League standings. Saturday sees us face the following team in the House Of Steel:
We entertain 2017-18 Elite League newcomers for the first time this season on home ice, and what a season they have had so far. They currently lie in 4th place in the overall standings, one place and one point ahead of the Steelers and also having played one game more than us. Results have been very good for the Surrey based side as they have recorded wins over current leaders and champions Cardiff as well as Belfast and Nottingham this season. Therefore we can ill afford to underestimate them.
They are coached by Paul Dixon, a 32 game Steeler in 1992-93. Yet that's not the only connection with us. The playing roster includes Geoff Walker who was an integral part of the play-off winning team last season, and Kevin Phillips: sibling of our very own Davey. They have scoring potential throughout, with eight players in double figures for goals. Particular attention will need to be paid to Swedish defenceman Calle Ackered who has 14 goals and 47 points this season; he is their go to man on the powerplay. So we will need to be our best for sure.
Sunday will see the boys on the road, and a potential banana skin of a game. We head north of the border to face this team:
A trip to the league's basement team, the Edinburgh Capitals. A team that always has its fair share of drama every season. Caps currently have just nine points all season but will have a bit of confidence about them after beating Manchester 4-3 last Sunday in Murrayfield. The Russian coaching experiment didn't work out, and at the time of writing: still haven't announced the successor. Despite their lack of depth, they will be a dangerous opponent for the Steelers and like Guildford the night before: we can't afford to underestimate them.
My predictions? The Guildford game will be a real test as the team is stretched with injuries and suspension, but we will battle through. It won't be as convincing as the win down there but I reckon the guys will take it 4-2. As for Sunday, another tough game. Steelers to take that one 5-3 but it will take a late goal to seal the deal. What do you think?
