Big Match Preview: Cardiff (Home)

Welcome to the preview of the next Sheffield Steelers game.

After completing three games in the space of five days last week and picking up a maximum six point haul from them, the Steelers do the same this week with a midweek game followed by a couple of testing weekend clashes. In a re-arranged game, Steelers host the following club tomorrow night (Wednesday) at the House of Steel.

Yes it's the champions-elect again for the second successive season, Andrew Lord's Cardiff Devils. After a slow start, Devils have gone through the gears and proudly once more stand atop of the Elite League table, eight points clear of second placed Manchester with nine games to play and a match in hand on Ryan Finnerty's team. The rest of the so-called title chasers, including us, are way into the distance and can forget about it. Therefore we can possibly assume that the champagne corks will be popping in South Wales again pretty damn soon once the proverbial fat lady has cleared her throat and starts signing Delilah or Hen Wlad Fy Nhadau.

Cardiff have had good success under Lord against the Steelers, capable to win here and back in Ice Arena Wales. If they perform like they did in the majority of the Challenge Cup semi-final then we could be in for a rough time, a result similar to when a Craig Weller inspired Devils side won 7-1 in the House of Steel when Ben Simon was coach of the Steelers. We certainly don't want that to happen do we? That was indeed a bad night at the office if there ever was one.

However, Steelers can prove to the Devils that they can match them and in some cases: better. The 11-0 hammering in March 2015 when the opposition is evidence we can turn it on in style, aided and abetted by some ill-discipline by the Devils, as well as the 6-2 Ice Sheffield game recently and of course the never to be forgotten Play-Off Final last year. It's not beyond the Steelers for sure. We need to believe in ourselves and if we do, the rest can take care of itself.

My prediction? I'm not going for another 6-2 home win, neither am I going to say there will be a repeat of the 11-0. I'm going for us to win, possibly 3-2 after overtime or penalty shots. It will certainly edge beyond the regulation 60 minutes for sure. What about you?
