A weekend of mixed emotions

I guess I am kinda lucky as my birthday is within the hockey season itself. It also means that depending what day it actually falls upon then there is a decent chance I'll be watching a game of some description in a eink. In recent years I have seen Steelers win Coventry Blaze convincingly in the House Of Steel. This year, it was the Panthers in opposition.

Prior to the fixtures coming out, I had deliberated over jetting out somewhere for a bit of late season sunshine. That was because I had it in my head that I thought we have a double header somewhere like Fife and Dundee around that time. That kind of changed when my mate said to me that I could easily forget that idea once he'd seen the fixtures list when they were released. Panthers away, and a night out post-game in the Lace City? My mind was quickly changed it has to be said.

So the wait for the actual day started, and once the calendar ticked over onto October then we were on serious countdown. Hotel and match tickets were booked, and it was like get ready for a decent celebration. We even decided we would go to the game in fancy dress; just to add a bit more extra to it. The night prior was a chill out one, pretty standard for me. Yet come noon on my birthday, having opened what cards I received, and wading through loads and loads of messages on my Facebook wall: it was time to go down the M1.

We picked fellow Steelers supporter Rosie en route, and made excellent albeit serene progress down the M1 to Nottingham: arriving at the hotel just after 2pm. A quick freshen up and the obligatory purchase of the lottery tickets ensued (believe me if I had forgotten then my life wouldn't been worth living as I would have had to face the wrath of my Mam) before meeting up with some other members of the hockey family (Sue, Danny, Kathryn and Kevin) for a meal in Hooters which seems to be usual thing now before a match at the NIC these days.

After the meal, predictably I had a Philly Cheese Steak, it was back to the hotel to get into costume and posing for a picture in the NIC itself for one of the Panthers official photographers. As for the game, it was one of them games that had a good side and a bad side to it. First period we should have put the Panthers out of sight but had just Luke Ferrara and Tyler Mosienko's goals to show for a lead. Even when Panthers pulled it back to 2-1 thanks to Kolnik, we responded immediately for 3-1 with a great finish from Mathieu Roy. My subconscious was already dreaming of a birthday win, and as we entered the last 5 minutes of that second period: we looked on course for that.

But once Myers made it 2-3, I noticed heads dropping and Panthers scented blood. Clarke levelled matters with a nice finish and just before the end of the period: Andy Bohmbach added a fourth to turn the game upside down. A laser from Mosey went through Tyler and the net too for 5-3, and it was the correct decision to award it despite what some around me were thinking. Yet Cullen made it 5-4 with 12 minutes left and maybe the pendulum would swing back our way? Alas not, Myers added his second and Panthers' sixth before MacMillan completed the scoring in a very strange hockey game with an empty netter with just over 2 minutes left.

Credit my Panthers friends, they were all admitting they were second best for the majority of the game but that was two points that we just let get away, such a disappointing end to a game which we should have won and in some sense, convincingly too. However rather than wallow in self pity and stay locked into my hotel room after the game, I got changed, freshened up again and went out for a few cheeky drinks or so. That I have very little memory of as I had a few, and have apparently made an agreement with one of my Panthers mates to swap one of my Steelers tops for one of his Panthers ones. Heck I must have been steaming. Still a good night despite the result..

Sunday morning and I was feeling a bit fuzzy to say the least. Head was delicate and I was heading to the bathroom at an alarming rate, perhaps that late night kebab was not the best decision I made. Eventually after an energy drink, I began to perk up and it was soon time to head back home as we had those Cardiff Devils in town at 5. That game was one we need to get a reaction from after the above events in the NIC the night before, and listening to Thommo's post game reaction just kinda summed up what we were feeling: we were literally hurting.

With Tom Pering in charge again, it was a tasty game it has to be said which some interesting decisions made by the number 41 in stripes being the talking point. It got to a stage for some that they were chanting "Bring back Hicksy!" after another weird call by the official, which is kinda rubbing the proverbial salt into the wound in some cases. Ben O'Connor opened the scoring, and by gosh he needed that goal after some had been questioning his performances recently but only for Devils player-coach Andrew Lord to share the spoils after the first twenty.

The real talking point was Tyler Plante though, who was trying to play through the pain barrier. It was sad to see a nettie in such agony, and once Martin made it 2-1 Devils then you just wondered how much longer this would go on for. Levi Nelson levelled matters almost straight after and then came the smart decision. Brad Day replaced Tyler to thunderous noise levels that had to be believed for both men, and you sensed that the team wanted to win the game not just for themselves and give Thommo the reaction he was looking for; but for their injury stricken team-mate. I've seen it happen so many times in football on a Sunday morning.

Mike Duco, another one whom some had raised questions over, put us ahead and we were putting the Devils under the cosh. Third period and we dominated that as if to say "We're having these two points!", and it took a freaky goal from Carl Hudson to level matters. Day was doing a remarkable job as relief and offensively we were the ones who looked like adding more to our tally with Ben Bowns being forced to bail out his side many times: we went into overtime and "The Bash Brothers" (Eddy and Fitzy) combined to set up Mam's wee favourite (and yours too Samantha) Dowdy to spin and fire in an effort that Bowns got a bit of but couldn't keep out. It was a character 4-3 overtime win and stuck those wheels back on after they'd come a bit loose.

All in all, it was a fantastic weekend and I must pay a shed load of thanks to those who made it for me. Just goes to show that the hockey family are one hell of a great bunch of people, you can't ask for more.

Five things from the week ending 1 November

Thank you to Tony for his contribution to FSB, All Credit for this piece goes to him so any queries you can contact Tony on Twitter @DISGU15ED.

Another five things I learned this week:

1> Video replays - It seems that each rink can make up its own rules when it comes to showing live and highlight images mid-game, and the White House took full advantage when they showed the waved-off goal on Sunday. Did it put unfair pressure on the referee - yes probably. Did it create a huge atmosphere and get the crowd into the game even more - yes definitely. Should theatre like that take precedence over sporting fairness: home fans say yes and I loved it.

2> 50:50 weekends - It's not just our lottery draw ticket sellers that are stuck with the 50:50 mantra, the team are in a routine of winning at home and losing away at the moment, and even within games, we seem awesome when we have the short change periods, and give up goals in bunches during the long change second period. Feels like the great form coming out of the CHL has been wasted on Challenge Cup group games, and we're back in the pack now the important games are being played.

3> Net-minding - I imagine Brad Day was chuffed with the win in Manchester, tingling with the reception he got on Sunday, and delighted when Dowdy saved him from Penalty Shots with his OT winner. But seeing the speed that Plante was moving early in the game, and a SVS% of third worst in the league, makes me wonder how long he's been playing with that injury, and if we're going to need some extended cover. Looking at Plante's CV  before the season we all saw that a full Elite league season would be a step into the unknown, and I hope this isn't the beginning of another N/M injury plagued season. Has anyone got Josh's mobile number to hand?

4> Goal counting at Altrincham - Is it just me or is goal shot counter for the Storm is a little trigger happy? Consecutive games where the Storm have outshot their opposition and had 48 & 55 shots themselves isn't foot of the table stuff.

5> Halloween Howler - Seems we tricked them in the first 30 minutes, and then gave out more treats than we should have at the NIC. I'm sure Corey thinks he made the difference, and Thommo thinks the players switched off, but the momentum of those two goals in 19 seconds to go from behind to in front, in front of a re-energised home crowd, was too much to fight back against. Losses to the Panthers are hard to take, and scoring four but leaving with a loss tells you where the problems are.

One final thought, be glad you're not a Blaze fan this year - the first team knocked out of the Challenge Cup group stages, the first team in recent years to not progress in the Continental Cup, and bottom of not only the Erhardt conference but also the entire league at the beginning of November? I think I had them fifth or sixth in my predictions, and I'm not sure they will reach that.

Exclusive Interview: FSB talks to ...Toby!

Toby in action, photo courtesy of Al Goold.

One of the things I wanted to add from time to time was an interview with somebody in the hockey world. Then as Alan and I drove back from Nottingham on Sunday morning, I had the perfect idea. Why not interview one of the EIHL stripeys? Having seen Tom Darnell do an interview for another hockey site a few months past, my thoughts turned to think whom I could approach.

I did think about Hicksy, but getting hold of him might be hard as he does not do social media anymore. Dean Smith, his fellow Caerdydd (Cardiff) based official was another possibility. However, I decided to drop Alan "Toby" Craig a chance tweet to see if he'd do it. Remarkably Toby accepted, so here we have it. FSB now talks to Toby, enjoy.

FSB: So you're a stripey by night. What does Toby do by day then?

Toby: I actually build kitchens for a firm based in Ayr.

FSB: Have you always been a hockey fan before becoming a stripey? If so, what are your first memories of the great game?

Toby: First memories eh? When I was about 8 years old watching my cousin play, and also the Ayr Bruins.

FSB: How did you become a stripey?

Toby: I had played junior hockey, second team and also had a couple of games for the first team at Ayr but then just got fed up with it and stopped. Ayr was a hotbed for officials, and Alex McWilliam, Drew Fraser, George Nicolson and I grew up in the same street as Gordon Pirry although he (Gordon) is older than me. These guys talked me into starting.

So that summer I was invited to the training camp in Nottingham; which was Nico Toeman's first year in GB. I managed to get in that season as a linesman, and a couple of seasons later I got my A License from the IIHF.

FSB: What are the best and worst rinks that you have officiated in and why?

Toby: Worst rink first. I never actually enjoyed going into Billingham to be honest. The actual rink was a dump and the referee's room was just a cupboard with no showers. Some of the other guys hated Durham, Whitley and Fife but not me. I just loved the atmosphere in those places when they were sold out.

Best rink? Wembley. I just loved being on the ice there especially when it was Finals weekend.

FSB: Where is the furthest you have travelled to officiate a game?

Toby: I have done IIHF tournaments in France, Holland, Spain and Slovenia.

FSB: We remember Michael Hicks had that tumble in Belfast when he forgot to take his skate guards off, have you had any embarrassing moments as an official?

Toby: Most Embarrassing. Years ago they revised the Scotland V. England games. I did both of them in Sheffield and Murrayfield. At the Murrayfield one we were coming out for the second period as it was going live on TV.

I like to be last on and last off so was at the back as we got to the ice. The other 2 stepped on the ice. I jumped onto the ice. Head down and away I went. The sell out crowd went daft. I'm at centre ice by this time and look up to see the figure skater going by. I about turned and skated back off. When she was finished I went back on to apologise to her. I took her hand and we did a lap of honour together. Haha

FSB: Who is the best player you've ever seen play as a fan or official?

Toby: Best Brits first. Tony (Hand), Lobby (David Longstaff), John Haig and Gordon Latto.

Best Imports: Chris Kelland, Al Simms, Kevin Lavelee, Len Hachborn and Danny Shea.

FSB: Do you follow the NHL? If so, who is your team?

Toby: Detroit are my NHL team but I also like the Rangers.

FSB: If you could make one change to the rule book what would it be and why?

Toby: Take out the 2 minute minor for removing your helmet in a fight. I like to see guys taking them off if they're going to fight. But I also like the 3 on 3 in Overtime.

FSB: And finally, how does Toby relax outside the world of hockey?

Toby: Spending time with my kids, playing golf and watching Glasgow Rangers.

Many thanks to Toby for this exclusive interview, what a fantastic bloke he is and a credit to the game and the EIHL itself. Mind you I just knew he'd mention Rangers FC at some point but I ain't gonna hold that against him at all. Hockey needs good guys, and this man is one of them. Hope you all appreciate this special feature.
