This Month In Sheffield Steelers History: August 2014

Rob Newbolt is back with this month's history lesson.

Message from Rob:
I'd like to give thanks to Mick Devine for keeping me in check while compiling these articles.

August 2004

Rob Stewart is confirmed as the new Steelers coach, and his first big signing is to be a small man, 5ft 9ins Canadian centre Dan Tessier aged 25, from Orleans, Ontario.

The roster at this stage, as the Steelers were in a state of flux, was still being finished as the new coach was not formally installed until next month, but a notable returnee for another season was the current coach Gerad Adams, having played over 50 times the previous year.

Two new signings were Jeff Christian (Hanover Scorpions-DEL) and Jayme Platt was poached from Manchester Phoenix (EIHL) as net minder.

On the Mike Blaisdell departure, for childcare reasons, Dave Simms reflects
“Circumstances change and Mike’s decision has been made. I like all of you, wish Blazer the very best. We all, of course, wish he hadn’t made this decision, and his timing certainly leaves a lot to be desired. Mike Blaisdell bought us great success, nine trophies in just four full seasons. What a record!”

August 2009

After losing net minder Jody Lehman, Steve Munn and Ashley Tait from the double winning side (elite league and championship), the roster at this stage, under Dave Matsos was:

  • Scott Basiuk (2nd term)
  • Brad Cruickshank (2nd term)
  • Randy Dagenais (3rd term)
  • Robert Dowd (returning for his first full season)
  • Dan Green (nm)-2nd term
  • Jason Hewitt (5th term)
  • Jeff Legue (3rd term)
  • Kevin Reiter (nm) (from Basingstoke Bison-EIHL)
  • Rod Sarich (5th term)
  • Doug Sheppard (3rd term)
  • Joey Talbot (3rd term)
  • Mark Thomas (5th term)
  • Matt Hubbauer (from HC Freiburg-Germany2)
  • Jonathan Philips (4th term, 3rd as C)

Steelers’ fans are being kicked out of the seats they’ve been sitting in for years - to save on the cleaning bill. More than 120 season ticket holders who sit behind the goal in the Steelers ‘home end’ have been informed the area is to be netted off next season.

Sheffield Steelers and Rotherham Council teamed up to illustrate their confidence that the planned new rink and £350m YES! Project, scheduled for Rother Valley Country Park, will still go ahead, despite the credit crunch. Both sides are convinced developers Oak Holdings will still finance the 327 acre project.
