The Playoff Picture: How It Looks Going Into The Last Weekend

Possibly the most exciting part of the season so far, what with Belfast's runaway victory, is the race not to finish 9th and make it into the playoffs.

There's a few people have done lots of scenarios, and I thought I'd have a look at it myself.
What We Know

  • Belfast Giants have won the league (if you have missed this information, go back to sleep, the rest of the article will not interest you) and so take 1st seed.
  • Dundee Stars take 2nd seed having won the Gardiner Conference.
  • Sheffield Steelers take 3rd seed having confirmed second in the league.
  • Nottingham Panthers and Braehead Clan have qualified, but their places are not guaranteed yet.
These are the confirmed.

What Is Needed (The Simple Version)
  • Nottingham need a regulation win over Belfast on Saturday night to confirm 4th seed. An overtime/shootout win would allow Braehead to catch up if they win both their games in regulation against Fife this weekend - although the next decider is head-to-head between the two teams, and I don't know what this tallies up like this season. Two points for the Clan over the weekend confirm a quarter final with the Panthers.
  • Two Coventry Blaze wins (over the Steelers and Cardiff), paired with two Braehead regulation defeats, would put the Blaze in the quarters with the Panthers. Two defeats could potentially lead to a head to head scenario with anywhere between one and 3 teams.
  • A Cardiff Devils win over Coventry sees them through. A defeat leaves them at the mercy of Hull and Fife.
  • Hull Stingrays need to beat Sheffield on Sunday, or hope that Fife lose both their games, at least one of them in regulation. Hull currently have two more regulation wins than Fife.
  • Fife Flyers need to win at least one game. If they win both, they are through. If they win one, they need other teams to lose. If they lose both in regulation, they are out. If they lose both in overtime, they need Hull to lose to the Steelers.
Its a bit more complicated than that, but I just gave myself a headache.

We'll keep you all up to date over the weekend about all the possible situations and who will finish where.

Good luck to everyone.

Liam
