Stop It Now

You heard me. Pack it in.

At least once a year, something happens to do with our club that leaves us looking like the class clowns of the EIHL.

Either through fault of the club, its officials, or even us the fans, the Steelers somehow always ending up as a laughing stock. Be that conducting contract talks in the press, making comments about match officials on local radio, or, such is the case as last night, Shirtgate.

Yep, somehow a comment about what item of clothing people were making turned into a pretty fierce slinging match from both sides, with people getting involved left, right and centre, and yet again creating a divide amongst the fanbase.

Firstly, let me say that everyone is entitled to an opinion. What Scott said was his, as were the responses. Maybe none of them were particularly well worded, but that's by the by. The main issue here, which remains an issue throughout all of social media, is responsibility.

Were it a case that a fan who barely had any followers or didn't hold much pull had said it, it would probably have been discounted. But Scott has a high social media reach due to his work with the club, and Premier Sports. What he says is seen by a lot of people, and when some of them people are those that he is commenting on, it is bound to cause a stir. Yes, entitled to his opinion, but he should still think about who is going to see what he puts, same as all of us should really.

He's certainly not the only guilty person for this on social media. All of us say things we probably shouldn't say on the internet, me included - as those who follow my personal account will attest to. But you still should be held accountable for these things and, while having opinions isn't wrong, the way you carry those opinions can be.

This is the latest in a saga of moves that leaves no doubt in my mind as to why other clubs look at us and giggle. We don't make life easy for ourselves, from the top of the club to those who pay the bills we have had a succession of gaffs and tiffs and quite frankly I've had enough of it.

Its high time we put our house in order. Present a united front. We all have one thing in common - we are fans of the Steelers. People show that in different ways. However they do it isn't wrong - it's personal preference.

Have I really just written about whether people wear hockey shirts outside of the rink? Sweet mother of Mary.
