Frozen Steel Meets: Peterborough Phantoms Director Of Hockey Jon Kynaston

Some/Many/All of us have been impressed with the superb start Luke Ferrara has made in a Steelers uniform.

Injuries required that the 21 year old be borrowed from Peterborough ahead of schedule, and he took his chance by the horns, with a good display against Nottingham followed up by a man of the match performance against Hull, then a good showing against Coventry where he did not seem out of place.

So we know he's a promising talent, but has that always been the case? I spoke to Jon Kynaston, the Director of Hockey at his parent club Peterborough Phantoms, to ask about Luke's history, and how he sees things going for the bright prospect.

FSB: When did Luke start first playing in the Peterborough system?
Jon Kynaston: Luke started as a young U10, he was an enthusiastic player, always smiling and it didn’t take long to see he had a knack for scoring goals. He was always one that stood out even at that age.

FSB: Was his talent obvious, or did he require some work to excel?
JK: I think every player requires a lot of work to excel, this is where Luke is different to many for me. He has talent, always did from the start but he also has an admirable work ethic and modesty, he wants to learn, he recognises work ethic is vital and is always striving to improve elements of his game. A great role model for young players.

FSB: How has he progressed through the years, how has he improved his game?
JK: Like I mentioned he has always stood out as a goal scorer, a player that can score big goals, at big times in big games against good minders, he has also always displayed a desire and will to win. His work ethic also stands him apart. I think now I see Luke developing his game physically, I have noticed him as a player having more of a physical presence and defensively he is becoming more and more responsible, he knows adding these elements is important to the next step in his journey. I will also add he is a great player to coach and I am sure all his coaches will reinforce that.

FSB: What do you feel he still needs to work on?
JK: He is a young man and as such is still developing physically, this will come with the commitment I know he puts in. His defensive roles without the puck and jokingly scoring from Penalty shots….

showing against Hull.

FSB: Can you see him becoming a permanent fixture in the Elite League? Do you think he could go even further than that?
JK: It has always been expected Luke will mature to the Elite League, I think he is doing it the right way by gaining the right experience in the EPL as an impact player that is learning in all game situations, he still has a bit of time to continue that yet!

I would not be at all surprised to see him play for a decade in the Elite League and add senior GB to his Junior GB caps. Can he go further into Europe and abroad, why not, that will be down to Luke!

Many thanks to Jon for his time. The future looks bright for our new number 29.
