SIHA Roundup 25/6-10-14

Ice & Slice's look back at the weekend's academy action

Spartans lost 8-1 at home on Saturday against a very good Blackburn Hawks team. A slow start and two defensive errors gifted Hawks a two goal lead, Jake Nurse & Adam Brittle grabbing the goals before a good goal from Dan Mackriel made it 3-0 within 10 minutes. Spartans battled to get back into the game but were undone with another defensive mix up allowed Chris Arnone to add another for Hawks which was followed by a good goal put away by Ollie Lomax.

After being overrun for the first period Spartans showed a lot of character & played with spirit but couldn't cut the 5 goal deficit. Elliott Knell gave Spartans some hope when he scored but Aaron Davies hit back for Hawks in a more even second period that saw Hawks up by six goals to one. The final period was similar to the second in that Spartans played well and matched Hawks but in fairness they couldn't quite better their opponents who scored two more mid way through the period through Chris Arnone & Dan Mackriel to run out worthy 8-1 winners.

Spartans slow start was punished by  Hawks but they did play well later in the game to make their opponents work harder for their win - which gives reasons to be optimistic - but top of the table Blackburn Hawks were simply the better team and look like they are going to take some stopping...enforced by another 8-1 win on Sunday against second place Billingham Stars!

On Sunday Senators squared up to Hull Jets for the second week running and got off to a great start by storming into a 3 goals lead. Tom Humphries scored a nice wrap around goal which was followed by Ben Towler finishing off some nice set up play by Sens. Some determined play from Joel Aheran set up Charlie Thompson who kept his composure to score a nice goal to make it 3-0.

Hull hit back, as they did last weekend, with two good goals scored by Jordan Fisher & Ben Sayer. Josh Gent  scored a great goal with 8 seconds left of the period to give Sens a bit of breathing space at 4-2. However, Sens were to make hard work of it in the second period as a gutsy Hull side fought back with Ben Spurgeon scoring but Nathan Britton restored the two goal cushion which was quickly followed by Josh Wheway 's shot after some good play from Ben Towler & Tom Robjohns.

Hull weren't having it and replied with two goals from Keiran Beach, the second a rather fortuitous one which just eluded Bob Browne in Sens goal with the puck trickling over the line to set up an interesting final period with the score at 6-5 in Sens favour. Senators stepped it up in the final period to outclass Hull and in fairness should have added more than they did but goals from Charlie Thompson, Sergevs Jegorovs & Tom Humphries were enough to see Sens home with a deserved but at times hard fought 9-5 victory. A job well done to once again overcome last seasons bogey team to leave Sens in second place in the table with 9 wins from 12 games.

Sheffield Swampfrogs 12's B travelled north to Whitley Bay but despite their best efforts came away empty handed going down 3-1 to Warriors.
