The Walkeden Review - The Weekend's Touchy Subject

Good evening everyone hope your all having a good week!

Right down to business as well all know Sheffield and Cardiff both played each other home and away the past weekend and it didn’t go by without incident on and off the Ice and off the Ice I’m off-course on about fans on social media especially Twitter over the last couple of days and today (Thursday 23rd October 2014) I was reading tweets between two Cardiff fans who were arguing among themselves and then there was other discussion going on between both sets of fans and to be honest with you it really wound me up and originally I had this to say.

“Give G all the stick you want just because he’s at Sheffield you’ve had a problem with us for a long time but at the end of the day it wasn't G's decision to leave was it?? We needed a coach he wanted a job business done and a good decision he won a championship within 8 weeks, now you’re all saying Francis is a legend for what he did on Saturday which personally I think is pathetic! Yet if roles were reversed and it was G you'd want his head? Yes or No? And as for Mosienko call him what you want! He knows what he did is wrong yes he broke the rules he shouldn’t have done it and I’m in no way condoning what he did in any shape or form! But he’s served his ban, paid his fine and I believe everyone deserves a second chance and Sheffield gave him that and I’m thankful for that he is one hell of a player and one I would rather have playing for us than against us, the fans wasn’t sure about him because of his passed and I was one of them, but for me he’s proving his critics wrong by letting his hockey do the talking and at the moment his points are showing that! So why not concentrate on your own team’s problems and your thuggish players while Steelers let their skill do the talking, we'll be sure to wave at you from the top of the league in March.

That is what I had to say earlier and I’m going to add it. At the end of the game on Saturday Trevor Hendrikx received a match penalty and many Cardiff fans complained about him being suspended for the game against us on the Sunday at the BBT but yet the rules state that anyone that receives a match penalty comes with an automatic one game suspension no during this Jesse Mychan and Cullen Eddy both received game misconducts and both got away with a suspension and fine which personally I was surprised with and thought they both got off likely under the circumstances of what happened. Now today (Thursday 23rd October 2014) DOPS (Department of Player Safety) had their say and explained that Hendrikx received a one match suspension which had already been served after continuously hitting Steelers forward Tyler Mosienko while Mosienko was unwilling to retaliate and he also ignored match officials when told to return to his team bench and also punched Cullen Eddy in the face knocking his helmet off by going over the officials now for me that sort of behaviour is unacceptable in any sport as neither player was able to protect themselves/ and if it was a Steeler I can guarantee I would be saying the same thing. Now if that’s a big part of his game I feel sorry for Cardiff and its fans. You can moan about the one match suspension all you want but it’s the rules while receiving a match penalty and he was probably lucky not to receive more and got off likely. Now it also came out that Neil Francis who is the bench coach of the Cardiff Devils also received a one game suspension along with a £250 fine and a warning over his future conduct after it shows on video evidence to be making hand gestures followed by foul and abusive language towards Mosienko in connection with his match fixing in Europe with a previous team now as a bench coach doesn’t Francis have to stay professional at all times or at least keep control of the players on his own bench in which he failed to do and I thought what he did to Mosienko was completely un-sportsmanlike and should know better. I don’t understand how Cardiff fans like what he did! They say its banter it’s part of the sport to get Mosienko to react well if it is fair play to Mosienko for keeping his cool and being the bigger man and it’s not banter what’s so ever as a representative of a professional sports club he should remember to remain as professional as possible at all times and certainly almost brought the game into disrepute on Saturday evening.

I’m glad to see one of the old rivalries coming back this year especially with the way both teams have been built this year but with rivalries you also need to be sportsmanlike and show at least some kind of class and that goes from the owners, staff, players and finally the fans of both clubs as it’s the fans who are the future of the game.
