5 Things Midseason Report

Midseason Report

Can't really grumble can we?

While this year hasn't been the explosive, "destroy everyone" campaign that we thought it might be, as of writing we are top of the league with games in hand over the team directly below us. You really cannot complain at that.

What are the five main talking points we can draw from the season so far?

1. Who is Jeff Legue?

The line of Mike Forney, Colton Fretter and Mathieu Roy have shown an amazing knack of getting the puck in the net. Showing their pedigree from the off, they have accounted for 58 of the side's 120 goals this year. Add in Tyler Mosienko's 18, as well as the odd goals coming from all around the team this year, and it's safe to say that we've upgraded from the former number 11. You maybe have to wonder how well he'd do with Fretter's service, or Mosienko doing the leg work for him, but I can't say I'd replace anyone in our team for him.

2. Super Frankie Doyle
Just how are we going to replace him come next year? Leading the league on GAA (more than 15 games) and Sv% (more than 20 games), Frank has conceded 74 goals - which when you figure that 27 of those came in 5 bad defeats, makes his stats over the other 26 games look even better. I suppose we have to hope that he really likes Sheffield and wants to stay another year or two (until a certain Mr Bowns wants to come home).

3. The Redemption Of The Mos
I was probably the fiercest critic of the signing of Tyler Mosienko. I didn't want his character, or what he'd done, to be associated with my ice hockey club. Thankfully, the club don't listen to jackasses on the internet and Tyler has proved my doubts wrong. He has the workmanlike effort that Stefan Meyer showed last year, with some silky hands to go with it. His wrist shot is something proper filthy. Consider me impressed.

4. Last season is a distant memory
Sure, it ended well, but before the March March we couldn't wait for it to end. Dour, uninspiring hockey, losing every other game, with a coach who didn't really fit. Compare it to now. You look at G in charge and you wonder why we ever bothered with anyone else. We're an exciting team to watch, a team that knows how to win games. We're a team that's going places, and it's damn good to see.

5. Isn't it good this year?
On any given night, any team can beat another. Braehead have come to the fore, Cardiff are exorcising the Ragan demons, the Caps are playing the plucky underdog role to a t, Hull have beaten Belfast, Dundee beat us and the Panthers. The Panthers themselves beat a DEL team and the Giants were one goal away from reaching the Continental Cup super final. It makes for a very exciting league, and it's only going to get better. Long may it continue.
