Match Report: 8.1.2015 - Stars v Steelers CC


Thursday 8th January 2015 – Dundee Stars (3-5-0) v Sheffield Steelers (6-1-1) @ Dundee Ice Arena. Face-off: 7:30pm, Challenge Cup Quarter-Final 1st Leg

Steelers travelled to Dundee in the 1st leg of the Quarter-final trying to end a four game losing streak and it started in the best possible way for the visitors when at () assisted by Forney and Fretter it was Jeff Legue who finished off at the back door to score his 1st goal since returning to the club it would be 2-0 timed at () when Mark Thomas scored his first goal in three seasons when he fired a snap shot from the blue line and it looked like Marc Cheverie had it but he dropped it and it bounced through the five hole and into the goal and Steelers were taking a two goal lead into the break.

Coming into the second period Steelers led 2-0 and we’d seen this before haven’t we! Would they let Dundee back into the game or would they close the game out. Sheffield extended their lead at () when Gord Baldwin picked up the puck behind Cheverie’s goal and he skated to the hash mark to the right of Cheverie but Baldwin lifted the puck over the shoulder of the Dundee netminder and the Steelers had a 3-0 lead. Could have very easily been 4-0 when Forney tried to play Legue for his second of the night but saw his shot blocked before Forney tried to toe drag the puck but his shot was eventually saved. Sheffield had a 3-0 lead going into the second intermission and left Dundee with a lot of work to do.

It was a quiet third period as Sheffield were very comfortable throughout the remaining 20 minutes with good chances falling to either side the best chance falling to former Steeler Chris Blight who managed to get himself away on the breakaway but Frank Doyle made the pad save and then it was Dowd who was denied on the backhand off the breakaway by Cheverie in the Dundee goal but it was a comfortable 3-0 win for the Steelers as they took a 3-0 aggregate lead into the second leg in Sheffield on the 14th January.
