Match Report: 18.1.2015 - Stars v Steelers EIHL

Sunday 18th January 2015 – Dundee Stars (9-22-3) v Sheffield Steelers (20-9-3) @ Dundee Ice Arena. Face-off: 6:30pm, Elite League

Dundee Stars – 3
Igor Gongalsky – 1st
Kevin Quick – 2nd

Sheffield Steelers – 2
Jeff Legue – 2nd
Tyler Mosienko – 3rd

Dundee started the game in very fast paced as they scored early on at 1:22 when from the blue line Igor Gongalsky managed to get a shot off that went through traffic and managed to beat Doyle down low for a 1-0 lead. Sheffield like they hadn’t been for week just wasn’t themselves and Dowd tried to get his team going when he dropped the gloves with the Stars goal scorer, both managed to land a few punches then looked for the takedown and with the officials trying to break them up punches carried on flying. Sheffield couldn’t break through Cheverie and Dundee took a 1-0 lead into the break.
End of the 1st Period: Dundee Stars 1–0 Sheffield Steelers
Shots on Goal: Stars 9-8 Steelers

Second period got underway and again Sheffield were slow out of the traps as they allowed Dundee to score their second of the game at 21:59, when Lust managed to play in Quick at the backdoor he managed to tip the puck past Doyle and suddenly it was 2-0 to the home side. Sheffield head coach Adams changed a few players around as Legue and Bois swapped lines and it seemed to give the Steelers a kick start. The visitors started to get more and more chances and eventually pulled a goal back at 30:44 when assisted by Forney and Roy it was that old fan favourite Jeff Legue that brought the Steelers within one goal and suddenly the Steelers had life. Sheffield couldn’t pull any more goals back in the second session and Dundee went into the break 2-1 up.
End of the 2nd Period: Dundee Stars 2–1 Sheffield Steelers
Shots on Goal: Stars 8–9 Steelers

The third period was completely dominated by the visitors as like the night before they threw everything including the kitchen sink at Marc Cheverie and couldn’t find any more than an equaliser that came at 57:31 with the clock ticking down Hay fired one on goal from the blue line that deflected through traffic and Dundee struggled to clear their zone and Tyler Mosienko tapped in on the door step and it was 2-2 and the game was going to overtime.
End of the 3rd Period: Dundee Stars 2-2 Sheffield Steelers
Shots on Goal: Stars 5–18 Steelers

Five minutes of overtime like the night before and it was dominated by the Steelers as they outshot the Stars 7-1, Sheffield had a golden chance to win it as Jonathan Phillips was taken out on the attack and was awarded a penalty shot but Cheverie was outstanding and helped them too the shoot out where Cheverie saved the attempts of Dowd, Mosienko and Forney and Sean Ringrose scored past Doyle for Dundee and it was the home side that took the extra point and it was just a two point weekend for the Steelers.
End of Overtime: Dundee Stars 2-2 Sheffield Steelers

Shots on Goal: Stars 1-7 Steelers

Match Report: 8.1.2015 - Stars v Steelers CC

Thursday 8th January 2015 – Dundee Stars (3-5-0) v Sheffield Steelers (6-1-1) @ Dundee Ice Arena. Face-off: 7:30pm, Challenge Cup Quarter-Final 1st Leg

Dundee Stars – 0

Sheffield Steelers – 3
Jeff Legue – 1st
Mark Thomas – 1st
Gord Baldwin – 2nd

Steelers travelled to Dundee in the 1st leg of the Quarter-final trying to end a four game losing streak and it started in the best possible way for the visitors when at () assisted by Forney and Fretter it was Jeff Legue who finished off at the back door to score his 1st goal since returning to the club it would be 2-0 timed at () when Mark Thomas scored his first goal in three seasons when he fired a snap shot from the blue line and it looked like Marc Cheverie had it but he dropped it and it bounced through the five hole and into the goal and Steelers were taking a two goal lead into the break.
End of the 1st Period: Dundee Stars 0–2 Sheffield Steelers
Shots on Goal: Stars 5-13 Steelers

Coming into the second period Steelers led 2-0 and we’d seen this before haven’t we! Would they let Dundee back into the game or would they close the game out. Sheffield extended their lead at () when Gord Baldwin picked up the puck behind Cheverie’s goal and he skated to the hash mark to the right of Cheverie but Baldwin lifted the puck over the shoulder of the Dundee netminder and the Steelers had a 3-0 lead. Could have very easily been 4-0 when Forney tried to play Legue for his second of the night but saw his shot blocked before Forney tried to toe drag the puck but his shot was eventually saved. Sheffield had a 3-0 lead going into the second intermission and left Dundee with a lot of work to do.
End of the 2nd Period: Dundee Stars 0–3 Sheffield Steelers
Shots on Goal: Stars 8–7 Steelers

It was a quiet third period as Sheffield were very comfortable throughout the remaining 20 minutes with good chances falling to either side the best chance falling to former Steeler Chris Blight who managed to get himself away on the breakaway but Frank Doyle made the pad save and then it was Dowd who was denied on the backhand off the breakaway by Cheverie in the Dundee goal but it was a comfortable 3-0 win for the Steelers as they took a 3-0 aggregate lead into the second leg in Sheffield on the 14th January.
Shots on Goal: Stars 7–10 Steelers

Match Report: 2.11.2014 - Stars v Steelers EIHL

Sunday 2nd November 2014 – Dundee Stars (1-9-2) v Sheffield Steelers (8-1-0) @ Dundee Ice Arena. Face-off: 6.30pm, Elite League

Dundee Stars – 4
Martin Cingel - 1st
John Dolan - 1st
Igor Gongalsky - 2nd PP
Jeff Hutchins - 3rd

Sheffield Steelers – 2
Mathieu Roy - 1st PP
Mathieu Roy - 2nd

Game got underway and the Steelers were missing Pascal Morency which I suspect was due to the hit he received from behind the night before in Edinburgh but it would be a slow start by the Steelers who were giving Dundee too much time to create chance on Doyle's goal and after killing an early Powerplay a mistake by Ben O'Connor let in Matt Ryan on a 2 v 1 break and he smartly played the puck to his left for Martin Cingel to finish it off nicely for a 1-0 lead on 6:21. It would soon be 2-0 though after sloppiness from the Steelers let Jeff Hutchins skate down the right un-challenged before he threw a puck in front of goal with ease for John Dolan to nicely re-direct the puck past Frank Doyle at 7:12. Sheffield started to come into the game a little bit more creating good chances but being thwarted by the impressive Cheverie who was in fantastic form all night but Sheffield would get an opportunity on the man advantage themselves as Ryan Grimshaw was called for hooking and it took the Steelers six seconds to pounce when off the face-off won by Roy to Fretter who nicely slid the puck to Roy who took touch touches before slotting the puck past Cheverie for a PPG at 13:06 to bring the Steelers within one goal. Sheffield should have probably been level before the interval if it wasn't for some last ditch defending by Dundee to deny the Steelers top line including a scramble on the Stars goal line with several players jumping on top of each other but Dundee would take the lead into the break.
End of the 1st Period: Dundee Stars 2–1 Sheffield Steelers
Shots on Goal: Stars 8-23 Steelers

Second period started with Sheffield having to kill an early 2+2 penalty on Mosienko for accidental high sticks but it was penalty kill that the Steelers looked more likely to score on as Cheverie Almost put one in high own net after coming to gather the puck he attempted to put it round his own goal but put it onto his own post as well as Roy being denied 1v1 himself but as the Steelers came back to full strength they levelled the game almost instantly when at 24:31 assisted by Hay and Baldwin, Roy skated in front of Cheverie before showing good stick skills to round the Dundee netminder to score into the empty net. Sheffield would have another man advantage but wouldn't be able to take the lead as Cheverie denied them at every opportunity but the game wasn't one sided as Frank Doyle had to make some fantastic saves as Stars were banging on the doorstep and just couldn't get the puck past Doyle but on 30:34 Dundee went on the man advantage with Hewitt in the box and again Sheffield nearly scored themselves as a bad decision by Cheverie almost let in Forney who rounded the goal but a good sprawling save denied the Steelers forward with the leg pads but it was Dundee who took the lead when at 32:21 Gongalsky had the puck to the left of Doyle's goal and shot in front of goal and I'm certain it deflected of a Steeler past Doyle for a PPG to give Stars a 3-2 lead. Sheffield tried to come back at Dundee but again they would be going into the break a goal down.
End of the 2nd Period: Dundee Stars 3–2 Sheffield Steelers
Shots on Goal: Stars 12–10 Steelers

Sheffield came into the third period knowing they hadn't played 40 minutes despite out shooting the home side massively they just wasn't clinical enough and the same can be said for the third period when Forney was denied early on but at 41:37 Dundee extended their lead to 4-2 when Hutchins found himself in possession of the puck all alone to the right of Doyle and fired a nicely taken wrist shot past the glove of Doyle which left Sheffield with a lot of work to do to get back into this game. Even with further powerplay opportunities the aggressive penalty kill by the Stars was frustrating the Steelers as at time they struggled to find the shooting lanes and had to result for shooting from distance, Stars very nearly made it a 5-2 score line when they found themselves on a 2v1 break but a poor touch would overrun the puck and it allowed Frank Doyle to cover it up, with the clock ticking down Sheffield was throwing everything at Cheverie including the kitchen sink but the Dundee netminder was in outstanding form and how he didn't get man of the match I'll never know. In a last ditch effort Gerad Adams pulled Frank Doyle at 59:28 for the extra attacker in an attempt to pull a goal back but they'd fall for 4-2 in Dundee only taking two points back to Sheffield but still 10 league games in and Sheffield have an impressive record of 8-2-0 only 3 points of the top of the table with games in hand.
Shots on Goal: Stars 5–14 Steelers

FINAL SCORE: Dundee Stars 4–2 Sheffield Steelers

Boxscore (1st-2nd-3rd-OT-[PIM]-{PP}-S)

Race For Second Heats Up In Dundee: (EIHL) Game Recap

Thursday 6th March 2013 - Dundee Stars (25-17-3) v Sheffield Steelers (26-15-4) @ Dundee Ice Arena. Face off: 7.30pm

The race for second is heating up, who would come out on top on a Thursday night in Dundee?

Doyle in goal for the Steelers with Mark Thomas back in the lineup but still without injured Goertzen, Woolhouse and Nell who is on that two way deal, Dan Bakala in goal for Dundee who are missing Rawlyk, Wiril and Sacchetti. The first period passed without any incident with no penalties being called and with the Steelers out shooting the home side 13-5 and by the sounds of it Dan Bakala making several outstanding saves to keep Sheffield at bay.
End of the 1st Period: Dundee Stars 0-0 Sheffield Steelers
Shots on Goal: Stars 5-13 Steelers

Second period would start and Dundee would go close with Bagron and Kashirsky before Bakala was performing more heroics to keep his side in the game then on 28:57 Tim Spencer would break the deadlock assisted by Maxime Lacroix and Jonathan Phillips to put the Steelers 1-0 up just before the midway stage of the game. Qualie would test Doyle from the point but the Sheffield goaltender would be having a quiet game so far but Stars would begin to build some decent pressure but were unable to figure Frank Doyle out. First penalty of the night was called on 36:18 when Nikita Kashirky was deemed two minutes for slashing to put Sheffield onto the first power play of the night and then on 37:11 Sheffield would make it 2-0 with a power play goal curiously of Robert Dowd assisted by Stefan Meyer and Gord Baldwin. Dan Bakala had to save a 3 on 2 break before Sheffield nearly tipped one in with four seconds left on clock.
End of the 2nd Period: Dundee Stars 0-2 Sheffield Steelers
Shots on Goal: Stars 3-17 Steelers

The third period got better for the Steelers when on 43:04 Robert Dowd scored his second of the night assisted by Nate DiCasmirro and Stefan Meyer for a 3-0 Sheffield lead. It was another period being controlled by Sheffield and Dundee just couldn't get into the game and on 56:46 as a penalty for Swindlehurst expired Robert Dowd scored his second of the game assisted by Dustin Kohn and Chad. Langlais to make it 4-0. With just under three minutes remaining Phil Hill took another penalty for holding of the stick but Sheffield would hold on for a 4-0 win and a 14 shot shutout for Frank Doyle
Shots on Goal: Stars 6-17 Steelers

FINAL SCORE: Dundee Stars - Sheffield Steelers

Boxscore (1st-2nd-3rd-OT-[PIM]-{PP}-S)
Dundee    - 0-0-0-0-[4]-{0/2}-14
Sheffield - 0-2-2-0-[4]-{1/2}-47

Dundee Man of the Match: #39 Dan Bakala
Sheffield Man of the Match: #1 Frank Doyle

Referee: #13 Scott Dalgleish
Referee:
Linesman: #31 Ally Flockhart
Linesman: #38 Pavel Halas

A convincing 4-0 win for the Sheffield Steelers up in Dundee and a 14 shot shut out for Frank Doyle, 14 shots yeah!! that says a lot about the performance as well as managing 47 shots on goal and forced Dan Bakala to perform just like he has done all season. It also shows what Gerad Adams has done to lift the team. next up is Hull away on Saturday before Belfast at home on Sunday.
