The Walkeden Review - So What To Say!

So then! This is going to be a rant - well I’m hoping not - anyway just a few things I want to write about!

So we seem to have gone on a bit of a slump on Christmas day we was sat top of the elite league table and now we sat in 5th place! Yes we're only 2 points off 2nd place but we're now 7 points off top spot, which is occupied by Braehead, and without bringing the conference problems into it we can say that the Clan have the easier run in. If the Clan go on to win the league though they deserve it so fair play to them. Anyway back to us.

Our form hasn’t been good enough for the last four weeks as results show. We’ve lost some massively important games especially when we were in a fantastic position to actually win them games, and then others we just haven’t turned up at all.

It’s really hard to put a finger on what it is after we looked like the team to beat for the first half of the season. It’s just annoying with the pending Challenge Cup semi-final, I see on social media fans saying we’ll lose anyway, what’s the point in playing it! Well if you go into a match thinking you’re going to lose then you’ve already lost. Its your own worst enemy in a way, as fans we pay our money and yes were entitled to boo and have an opinion, I would never boo them - I don’t think it helps. We have to show faith in the team and get behind them and this might sound like a cliché but without us there is no them. So let’s pack the building for the home and away leg and try our damned hardest to get into the final.

We made it into the semi-finals of the challenge cup where we’ll face the Panthers and as much as I would love to be the team that stop them winning a 6th challenge cup in a row, on the way we’ve been playing lately especially against them I just can’t see how we can beat them. They’ve definitely got our number at the moment. Recent results have forced Gerad Adams to make a move and that began with the sacking of Danny Bois who only joined in late November and featured in 15 games scoring 7 points (2+5) accumulating 22 penalty minutes, but his Steelers journey didn’t start well when he was injured on his debut up in Braehead. He then missed the next 6 games while he was recovering. I think I speak for everyone at Frozen Steel when I say good luck to Danny and wish him all the best in the future. Unfortunately it didn’t work for him at the Steelers as he just didn’t seem to bring what was expected of him as was seen when he played in Europe.

It’s just a shame that some fans were arguing this sacking, yes it does leave us short due to injuries and no replacement yet but maybe it’s also a warning to give the rest of them a kick up the arse which is what they need. Some fans were even saying why sack Bois and not Ferrara as he’s never on the Ice. Well there is a reason for that - anybody who knows hockey understands a two way deal and as Luke is only 21 he’s a prospect/one for the future it’s all about his development at the moment as we don’t want to try and rush him and ruin him.

At the age of 21 we could very easily keep him on a two way deal for another year or two and then throw a long term contract at him and give him the chance to show what he can do, let him develop the proper way as I think in Ferrara we’ve got someone similar to Dowd who wants to score as many goals as possible, but I think he’ll be more like Phillips - an absolute work house but with the ability to put the puck in the back of the net on a regular basis.

Now the question is what do we need? Do we need a well-known sniper who can put the puck in the net? Let’s be honest if you look at our roster we have plenty just running low on confidence at the moment. Do we need a power forward or possibly a stay at home defenceman? Everyone will have their own opinions as there entitled too! A lot of people are throwing names around of ex-players who were fan favourites as much as I too would like to see them back even if it is what we need it isn’t if you know what I mean, It’s new blood we need something that is unknown to the Elite League.
