Big Match Preview - Belfast and Cardiff

Another hard weekend awaits Paul Thompson and his men as they continue in their bid to make it a three-peat this season, and to also haul in runaway leaders Cardiff Devils. Nothing less than 3 points will be considered a success in some people's eyes. Let's look ahead to it all.

Saturday night is the first of the two away games, a trek to face these guys:

Yes we're off to the Odyssey (or SSE if you want to refer to it by its corporate name) to face Derrick Walser and his Belfast Giants there for the first time this season. We had a decent record there last season, winning three and losing just the once which was the game after 1DGate. It will be tough but if we play them as well as we have done in recent times, then there's no reason whatsoever why we can't skate off with a regulation win on the road. It will be also the first game between the sides after the Rutherford-Hagos incident so it will be interesting to see if any come back happens after that. Giants lie third in the table, a point behind us but we also have three games in hand on them.

Going into Sunday, we're on the road again and this is a game I personally think we cannot afford to lose. We play this team:

Yep, the runaway leaders. Depending on fresh the players bodies are after what is probably going to be a sapping game in Northern Ireland with the travel involved, will give us a good idea on how this game will pan out. We know we can get something there, we just need the lucky bounces going our way. Also needed is a strong referee, please not Jan Schjemkal after the problems caused just a couple of weeks back which annoyed Thommo, the players and us fans. I'd even take Hicksy over him! But the travel is going to be the most important part of the equation here. Cardiff are at home to the Panthers 24 hours prior so they should be more fresh than us. But big games call for big player performances, we're overdue one.

Verdict? Steelers to win 3-1 in the Odyssey on Saturday but I fear we will lose 4-2 in IAW on Sunday, thus re-opening that 13 point gap. Sorry guys...
