From The Editor's Chair - Edition 53

Welcome everyone to the view "From The Editor's Chair". In this particular edition, Mark looks at each of the quarter-finals. It's time for play-off hockey everybody.

Cardiff Devils (1) v Coventry Blaze (8): For me this is the most clear cut of the match-ups and I don't think many will disagree. Whilst the Blaze, who squeaked into the final eight because of the Clan's inadequacies, have a tendency to give the Devils a game and a bit: they lack the firepower to deny the Devils a place in the final four. Devils will ultimately be too strong and should secure their place with ease.

Key Players: Joey Martin (Devils), Jordan Pietrus (Blaze)

Manchester Storm (2) v Fife Flyers (7): Storm have had an excellent season, their first under the coaching of former Steelers and Clan Head Coach Ryan Finnerty. They have ability in all areas and can play with an edge as well beat you with skill. Fife have had an equally good season themselves but if Andy Iles is still unfit then that will make Storm's chances greater as much as Jordan Marr has been a capable enough deputy.

Key Players: Mike Hammond (Storm), Chase Schaber - should Iles be unfit to play (Flyers)

Sheffield Steelers (3) v Guildford Flames (6): Steelers go into the defence of their play-off trophy in good form indeed, having won their last four games. They will have the luxury of possibly being able to sit two imports and in Eric Neiley, have a man playing red hot. Flames have acquitted themselves well in their debut EIHL season, and if they can keep leg one close then will fancy their chances for an upset. But Steelers should do it.

Key Players: Eric Neiley (Steelers), Brian Stewart (Flames)

Nottingham Panthers (4) v Belfast Giants (5): After losing their way from December onwards, Panthers have started to perform especially when news broke that this would be Corey Neilson and David Clarke's final season apiece. And in play-off hockey they're usually pretty good too. Giants can blow hot and cold too but do have enough about them to ensure there is no fairy tale finish. This one could easily go either way, too close to call.

Key Players: Alexander Mokshantsev (Panthers), Sèbastian Sylvestre (Giants)

How do you see them unfolding?

Mark

Controversy as Steelers fall to Giants

Welcome to our match report from last night's game away to the Belfast Giants.

Steelers headed into their game against the Giants in need of an instant bounce back after being shutout at home by Cardiff in midweek. Giants, on the other hand, were looking for a bounce back of their own. Adam Keefe's men had picked up a blank home weekend the weekend previous when they lost to the league's bottom two sides; Edinburgh and Milton Keynes. Steelers showed two changes from the team that lost to Cardiff, Kieran Brown was playing for Blackburn as part of his two-way deal with the NIHL side whilst there was a recall for Zack Fitzgerald as he replaced the injured Jonas Westerling. Giants were without Mark Garside, Jim Vandermeer and David Rutherford.

Needing a better start to the game than they did on Wednesday, Steelers managed it. However, only by 42 seconds as they conceded the opening goal of the game at 1:12. A give and go between Blair Riley and Sebastian Sylvestre saw the Giants captain light the lamp past Ervins Mustukovs. Both teams then started to pick a few penalties, Steelers excellent penalty killers showing why it's head and shoulders above anyone else's in the Elite League with a superb double penalty kill in the closing stages of that opening period.

Steelers needed a response and they got it in the first three and a bit minutes of the middle period. With Giants Jeff Mason sitting an interference minor, the ever impressive Mark Matheson orchestrated another powerplay goal. His pass found fellow defenceman Miika Franssila and whilst Jackson Whistle stopped the Finn's effort, there was nothing he could do to prevent Matt Marquardt burying home the puck for the forward's 25th of the season. A 5 on 3 powerplay chance came in the closing stages of this period, this time for the Giants, but it was the Giants penalty killers who replicated the Steelers' efforts of that in the opening period with a well executed double kill and the teams left the ice after 40 minutes play: locked at 1 goal apiece.

Both teams gave it their all in the final period, racking an astonishing 33 shots between them to leave the shot count at 38 each. However, one of them made all the difference and the destination of the points. It went the way of the Giants. Veteran forward Steve Saviano crashed the net and the puck found its way in. However, Steelers coach Paul Thompson was far from impressed with it as he thought that Saviano had taken out Mustukovs into the net with the puck. The officials didn't agree, and adjudged it was momentum so the goal stood. Mustukovs was sacrificed with 1:46 to go but Steelers couldn't get that all important goal which would have gained them a point minimum and Giants snapped that losing streak whilst extending Steelers' losing one to two games.

Time for the statistics:

Goals: Giants 2 Steelers 1

Steelers Scoring: Marquardt 1+0, Franssila 0+1, Matheson 0+1.

Giants Scoring: Saviano 1+0, Riley 1+0, Sylvestre 0+1, Kurtz 0+1, Raine 0+1, Ferland 0+1

Shots On Goal:  Steelers 38 Giants 38

Penalty Minutes called: Steelers 12 Giants 12

Steelers Goaltender Stats: Mustukovs 36 Saves (1187), GAA: 2.06 (2.35), Save Percentage: 94.70% (91.70%).

Big Match Preview: Belfast and Fife

Welcome to the preview of the weekend's Steelers games.

It's another busy weekend of action for the Steelers as they go into the last weekend of February action. It all begins on Saturday with an away trip and it's not a short one either. Saturday sees the team in action here:

Yes it's a trip across the sea, and to Northern Ireland to face the Belfast Giants. Giants have had the best of the regular season games with us, and will be looking to get back on track after suffering an unexpected zero point weekend while we were taking the points from Coventry and Guildford. Adam Keefe would not have been a happy bunny we can guess. A win for the Steelers would be the best response after their midweek home reverse to champions-elect Cardiff. It's a game they can win.

After flying back on Sunday lunchtime, the Steelers head straight to the House Of Steel to face another side in the top half of the table. We entertain this side:

This season's surprise packet and the newly crowned Gardiner Conference champions, Todd Dutiaume's Fife Flyers. Fife were successful on their last visit to the Arena as they overturned a one goal deficit to skate back to Kirkcaldy with a 3-1 road win. They have a very good goalie in Andy Iles and some serious offensive power in the shape of Danick Gauthier, Chase Schaber and Evan Bloodoff who have netted over 70 goals between themselves this season.

There's also the dependable and experience of former Steelers Jim Jorgensen and Russ Moyer on the blue line. We will have to be sharp to avoid another loss on home ice.

My predictions? Giants to take the game in the "O" 4-2, Steelers to bounce back with a 3-1 home win over the Flyers on the Sunday. How do you see them unfolding?

Giants slain for eight by rampant Steelers

Welcome to our match report from Sunday's unforgettable game when we entertained the Belfast Giants.

After slipping up in Milton Keynes on the Saturday, Steelers headed back looking for a response on the Sunday. However, in opposition were Adam Keefe's Belfast Giants: a team that had held the upper hand in previous games this season with the Steelers only recording one win in the six played so far. Steelers team news saw Swedish forward Andreas Jämtin return to the line up after completing a three game suspension whilst Colton Fretter, Robert Dowd and John Armstrong remained on the injured list. Giants had a few injury problems of their own as Mark Garside, Stephen Murphy and Dustin Johner were absent. Former Steeler Ashley Tait was added to the roster to add more depth on the night for the visitors.

Steelers were the first team to be penalised on the night as former Giant David Phillips was called for an interference minor, but the Steelers penalty kill showed why it was one of the best in the league by negating the man advantage even if the Giants had plenty of looks including a goalmouth scramble. 36 seconds after the penalty expired, the Steelers opened the scoring. Jämtin did superbly to break up a Giants move in the visitors zone and then Cole Shudra showed great vision to feed fellow teenager Liam Kirk whose one-timer fizzed past Jackson Whistle for the forward's 6th of the season. The goal announcement hadn't finished when the Steelers added a second 26 seconds later, Andreas Valdix fed Ben O'Connor who waltzed through the Giants defence and scored a delightful goal that had people purring. It was Ben's 11th of the season.

The Giants were shell-shocked, and just over a minute later shipped a third to the rampant Steelers who clearly scented that they could really take the visitors to town and dish up a heavy beating. Whistle offered a rebound from a Scott Aarssen shot and Levi Nelson basically said "Thank you very much." as he pocketed the third unmarked, and his 15th of the season. This was the cue for Keefe to call a time out but it seemed to have not much of an effect as players from his side started to lose their own personal discipline. But they were given a chance when Nelson was assessed a double minor for accidental high-sticks, yet remarkably this failed to produce a goal for but instead a fourth Steelers goal. Spiro Goulakos, who was being mercilessly booed every time he touched the puck, lost possession on the blue line and Jämtin raced clear. The Swede confused Whistle with a brilliant move before finishing confidently short-handed and score his 7th of the season. What a way to return back to the line up!

Could the Giants stem the bleeding in the second, goals wise? Well they did, as the Steelers only scored once in the middle period but embarrassingly enough for the Northern Irish team: it was a second shorthanded goal. With Valdix sitting a hooking minor, O'Connor took possession of a loose puck and skated away down the left wing before firing an effort into the roof of Whistle's net despite the netminder getting a small piece of it. Ben's 12th of the season. But Giants became more and more indiscipline began to creep in, Sebastian Sylvestre sat a 2+10 check to the head and then as the period almost finished, Brendan Connolly launched himself late on Shudra which Steelers skipper Jonathan Phillips rightly took exception to. Connolly and Phillips picked up fighting majors for their altercation but it was also the end of the night for the Giants number 63 as he was also assessed a 5 plus Game for the late hit on the young Steelers forward.

Steelers had a five minute powerplay out of this but could only score once on it despite many looks, Matt Marquardt getting the decisive tip in front to net his 18th of the season at 41:33. With just under eight minutes to go, Keefe decided to end Whistle's night (not that he could be blamed for the majority of the goals conceded) and give Andrew Dickson the remainder of the game. Two minutes after his introduction, Dickson was fishing the puck out of the net as Steelers scored a seventh. Remarkably it was a third shorthanded goal of the evening as Steelers were defending an Aarssen slashing minor, O'Connor sending Jonas Westerling down the left and he produced a superb saucer pass that evaded the sole Giants defender (the much maligned Goulakos believe it or not) and skipper Phillips rammed the puck home at the far post. The scoring was complete with 50 seconds left in the game; another superb break by the Steelers as they bore down on Dickson 3 on 1 and Marquardt applied the coup de grace with a superb finish from the high slot for his 19th of the season. A night to remember for the Steelers, but one to seriously forget for the Giants.

Time for the statistics:

Goals: Steelers 8 Giants 0

Steelers Scoring: Marquardt 2+1, O'Connor 2+1, Jämtin 1+1, Valdix 0+2, Westerling 0+2, Kirk 1+0, J.Phillips 1+0, Nelson 1+0, Aarssen 0+1, Wallace 0+1, Matheson 0+1, Shudra 0+1.

Giants Scoring: Nobody!

Shots On Goal:  Steelers 30 Giants 31

Powerplay: Steelers 1 from 6 (17% conversion), Giants 0 from 6 (0% conversion)

Penalty Minutes called: Steelers 19 Giants 52

Steelers Goaltender Stats: Mustukovs 31 Saves (966), GAA: 0.00 (2.22), Save Percentage: 100.00% (92.30%).

Man of the Match: Ben O'Connor (Steelers), Colin Shields (Giants)
