Steelers make a signing

Late last night or early this morning, Sheffield Steelers added a new import to their roster. After releasing Jesse Schultz, Steelers took their time in finding a new face to replace him. Joining the Steelers for the remainder of the campaign is 29 year old Canadian right winger Geoff Walker, acquired from Fassa HC in the Alps Hockey League.

So what do we know about our new import? Here's a few bits of information we've delved into and found out about him:
  • Before joining the Steelers, Walker was top scorer in the Alps HL. He'd scored 20 times and had 32 assists in addition for 52 points in just 32 games - that's more than a point and half per game.
  • Whilst he never made a NHL appearance, he has 125 points in 293 AHL games (regular and post-season). That's also a decent pedigree.
  • He's not afraid to have a scrap and courts Louis Robitalle as one of the guys he's dropped the mitts with. At 6'3 and 224 pounds, Walker is not afraid to use his size.
  • In 2013-14 he played briefly with our very own Mathieu Roy at Florida Everblades. In the same roster was Charles Landry who was at the Bears the following year.
  • He's also featured at Missouri Mavericks, whom Colt King, Matt Stephenson and Mike Ramsay iced for after leaving Sheffield. Amongst his team-mates there were Manchester duo Mike Clementè and Dallas Erdhardt, Fife's Sèbastian Thinel and Belfast's David Rutherford.
  • He's worn shirt numbers 8 and 17 in the past. With Markus Nilsson already wearing 17, could Walker be our new number 8?
So we expect him to be in the line-up on Wednesday night when we entertain Fife Flyers; which means he'll get to see his old buddy Thinel probably. He looks a more than useful addition, able to score goals and in all situations too. After Schultz's departure, Thommo needed to find a player with a decent pedigree, I think he's got one here. It does mean that one non-EU import will need to sit to accomodate him however, whoever that is - that becomes PT's call obviously.

Welcome to Sheffield Geoff, hope you enjoy your time here.
