Big Match Preview: Home Double Header (Cardiff and Belfast)

It's time for your preview of the weekend ahead in Steelers hockey land.

This weekend sees the Steelers play back to back home games in the Arena having played two games in Scotland at Dundee and Edinburgh respectively. Both are inter-conference games which could prove to be crucial at the end of the season when it comes to handing out the big prize. Steelers have not made an auspicious start to their conference, lying bottom with just two points from their four games so far. This has to improve, and I am sure PT and JA will be fully aware of that fact.

Saturday night hockey features this side:

Yes it's the current holders of the Montieth Bowl, Andrew Lord and his Cardiff Devils. Despite being tied up with Champions Hockey League commitments, the Devils have made a steady start to their league title defence (better than their Challenge Cup form) and have already won in Sheffield this season recording a 4-3 overtime win here last month thanks to that freaky game winner from Justin Faryna when the game looked destined to go to a penalty shootout. It was a game that Steelers should have won but failed to capitalise on chances in the extra five minutes.

Devils are likely to give a debut to new signing Tyson Strachan, who boasts 188 career NHL games spread over five clubs and over 400 in the AHL. Some resume eh? They almost possess Drew Paris who missed the earlier game this season due to injury, but will be one to keep an eye on as he has a handy shot on him from the point when given the chance. Then there's also Bownsy amongst the supporting cast. It's as tough as you can get.

Sunday and Steelers will need to summon up all their reserves of energy for another tough home game, and probably their fourth solid 60 minute performance in as many games. In opposition Sunday teatime are this wee bunch:

Yes the Giants visit the Arena for the second time this season. In the two previous encounters, one in the "O" and one here, Giants have won both. Therefore isn't it time that the balance was redressed so speak? Adam Keefe's team play a hard physical game, just like he would do if he was still playing, but there's still some decent skill out there. The Colin Shields factor is also something that we cannot ever discount as the Giants stalwart always seem to pick up a goal or an assist against us; his former club.

My predictions? Steelers to squeak past the Devils 3-2 in overtime on the Saturday, and then lift themselves for another huge effort on Sunday when they will be on the right side of a 4-2 scoreline. How do you see them unfolding?
