Lightning does unfortunately strike twice

Welcome to our match report from Saturday's game at Milton Keynes.

After completing an impressive four point weekend on their return to Elite League action, the Steelers headed south to Milton Keynes in the hope they could keep the momentum high and rise up the table. They had to do this without the injured duo of Robert Dowd and John Armstrong who were also joined by winger Colton Fretter with an unspecified injury whilst Kieran Brown was still on his way back after his knock. Joonas Ronnberg, who re-joined the team a few days earlier, was back on defensive duty.

The home side, desperate for a win, had a few injuries of their own. Forwards Tommy Mele and Kyle Essery were absent as was netminder Miika Wiikman who sustained a concussion in the Lightning's last game, former Panthers netminder Jindrich "Henry" Pacl started after only arriving in Buckinghamshire 24 hours ago on a short term deal.

It was a game that began at breakneck speed for the Steelers as they were awarded two chances on the powerplay before 10 minutes were up, the first one in the opening 24 seconds. However whilst they had a few looks, they couldn't convert. The chances were coming up but not being taken; and that was going to be the story of the night as the game unfolded for the Steelers. Then at 13:16, the Lightning scored and it was probably against the run of play too. Former Hull, Nottingham and Cardiff winger Guillaume Doucet wound up and from the right wing: arrowed an effort into the top corner of Ervins Mustukovs' net.

In the early stages of the middle period, Steelers had to kill a four minute powerplay given against Levi Nelson. It looked like an accidental high sticking call to most but for some unknown reason it was announced as a check to the head. Isn't that a 2+10 if we're mistaken? Anyway it gave Lightning a chance which they doubled their lead at 22:37, captain Kevin King blasting a shot in past Mustukovs from the right circle. The Steelers needed something to spark themselves into life and make one opportunity count, and they did it at 27:25 when Liam Kirk was given space in the high slot to fire home his 5th of the season past Pacl. The pressure continued and the scores were level at 32:07, Nelson taking advantage of a Pacl rebound to score his 14th of the season - the goal being awarded after a review which wasn't needed.

Just over three and a half minutes later, Lightning regained the lead and in familiar fashion too. With Matt Marquardt sitting a roughing minor, the highly rated Lewis Hook snapped a shot from the right circle and high into the net: the third such goal that evening. Yet the teams should have been level going into the final period, Pacl couldn't hold onto a Nelson effort which the winger put away but the officials washed it off immediately believing that the Czech netminder had the puck covered up when he clearly didn't. A glaring error that could have been used for GLT but wasn't.

Steelers ran into a few penalty problems in the final twenty, and on their third powerplay of the period Lightning scored their fourth of the night and third powerplay strike. Another shot high from King that found the net over the shoulder of Mustukovs to give his side some much needed breathing space as Steelers continued to wrack up the chances. Despite pulling the Latvian netminder in the final 83 seconds, the Steelers couldn't find their way open and shipped a fifth with nine seconds left. Denny Kearney was serving a slashing minor, but Steelers coughed it up and Francis Verreault-Paul won the foot face that ensued to tuck it into the empty cage and secure the Lightning's win.

Big Match Preview: Milton Keynes and Belfast

Time once more for your preview of the next set of Sheffield Steelers games.

The games are coming thick and fast as the season heads towards it's final two months. Steelers are on the fringes of the title race, perhaps that blip in form proved costly after all. But no game is an easy game despite what people might think.

Saturday night sees the team on the road, here:

A trip back down to Buckinghamshire to face Pete Russell and his Milton Keynes Lightning. In their last meeting down here, Lightning took the Steelers apart with a 7-2 dismantling that left the sizeable away following very disgruntled indeed. It was also the final game of Andre Deveaux's short spell as a Steeler as he was released by the Club a few days later. Steelers will be hoping for better fortunes this time around for sure.

However, despite their lowly position of 11th, Lightning are not as bad as it appears to be. They have some good quality in their side who will take advantage if you are not on your game. Added to that there's the goaltending of Miika Wiikman but the former Panthers netminder may be a doubt after being carried off in the 7-3 loss to his old club last Sunday. Jordan Hedley deputised for the remainder of that game and could be called upon again when Steelers roll into town.

After this game, which should be a tense one, there's a tough Erhardt Conference game in the House Of Steel on Sunday as we entertain a team that has had our number quite a lot this season.

It's the Giants, which means a return to the Arena for the defenceman that most Steelers fans cannot abide: Spiro Goulakos. Giants this season have been very successful against the Steelers, winning every game bar one which was the first game of the double header in the "O" at the start of this month. They have done this and are chasing down leaders Cardiff in the race for this season's Monteith Bowl, personally I do think it will be between these two come the final standings.

The visitors also have the mercurial and talismanic figure of the evergreen Colin Shields, who had a short but less than successful spell here in Sheffield. Shields always seems to turn it on when he faces us and can be guaranteed to either score or assist on a goal, perhaps one day I'll put a bet on him to do this and make some money out of him. A win for the Steelers would certainly increase the confidence in the team which has been a welcome change in fortunes.

My predictions? Steelers to win in Milton Keynes, possibly 5-3 and then to take two points off the Giants albeit in overtime. I'm going for 3-2 with that one? How do you see them unfolding?

Steelers strike six as Lightning pay the penalty

Welcome to the match report from Sunday's home game against the Milton Keynes Lightning.

After suffering a 4-1 reverse in Nottingham the night before Steelers looked to bounce back immediately as they entertained Milton Keynes for the first time in the House Of Steel since 1996, when the Steelers defeated the Kings (as they were then known as) 10-1. Team news saw the Steelers unchanged from the team that iced at the NIC which meant once more Brady Ramsay was the spare import sitting out the third of the Deveaux suspension. Lightning had no injury concerns, but had released former Steeler Ashley Tait in midweek from his short term deal in Buckinghamshire.

Steelers started with intensity, forcing former Panthers netminder into a save inside the first 40 seconds, but Lightning were always dangerous on the counter as they had proven a few times just eight days before when they routed Steelers 7-2. However like the Steelers in that game, Lightning were the ones who were picking up more than their fair share of penalties and one of those powerplays Steelers struck the opening goal of the game. After Ervins Mustukovs had denied Milton Keynes on a 3 on 1 shorthanded break, John Armstrong scythed his way through the Lightning blue line and whilst facing the wrong direction , managed to roof a superb backhand shot over Wiikman to gave Steelers the lead at 9:10. It was John's team leading 16th goal of the season.

More MK penalties followed as the visitors were seemingly making regular visits to the away penalty box quicker than a 51 bus to Charnock. The second period began with Steelers on yet another powerplay. At 21:20, a shot from the blue line was parried into the path of Colton Fretter who made no mistake from close range for 2-0 and a 10th goal of the season. Yet you just knew that one of those Lightning breaks would eventually pay off, and it did at 27:58. With Ben O'Connor caught out, the puck was chipped out to centre ice and Kyle Essery skated in on Mustukovs to score bar down and in. It was also a shorthanded strike which made a bit more of a bitter pill to swallow.

Buoyed by that Lightning continued to press, but Steelers were definitely making Wiikman more busier than he wanted. Needing a third goal to settle things down again, Steelers got it with 51 seconds of the second period left. A well executed slapshot on the powerplay from Mark Matheson simply scorched into Wiikman's net leaving the netminder still wondering where the puck was although he was not helped by his own defender Matt Nickerson providing an unexpected screen.

We had to wait until just over nine minutes left in the game before Steelers scored their fourth which virtually sucked the life out of the Lightning, Robert Dowd scoring his 13th of the season following good work by Levi Nelson and David Phillips. It also signalled the end of Wiikman's night as he went off injured (and this time with no Steeler nearby), clearly something was wrong with his groin or shoulder, back up Jordan Hedley coming on in relief. More penalty problems led to the final two Steelers goals. Goal five came when former Cardiff Devil Denny Kearney was penalised for charging at Mathieu Roy and "The King" made him pay the price with a wrist shot that he fished past Hedley from inside the right circle, and then with Francis Verreault-Paul serving a cross checking minor Fretter put the biscuit across the crease and Roy was there to apply a simple finish at the back post for his second in as many minutes.

A much better performance from the team, one they will hope to build on as the games come quick and fast although Lightning's penalty woes didn't help their cause at all on the night.

Time for the statistics:

Goals: Steelers 6 Lightning 1

Steelers Scoring: Roy 2+1, Fretter 1+2, Dowd 1+1, Wallace 0+2, O'Connor 0+2, Matheson 1+0, Armstrong 1+0, D.Phillips 0+1, Nelson 0+1, Westerling 0+1.

Lightning Scoring: Essery 1+0, Isackson 0+1, Pompi 0+1.

Shots On Goal:  Steelers 43 Lightning 17

Powerplay: Steelers 4 from 9 (44% conversion), Lightning 0 from 5 (0% conversion)

Penalty Minutes called: Steelers 10 Lightning 18

Steelers Goaltender Stats: Mustukovs 16 Saves (560), GAA: 1.00 (2.37), Save Percentage 94.10% (91.70%)

Man of the Match: Joonas Ronnberg (Steelers), Kyle Essery (Lightning)

Big Match Preview: Nottingham and Milton Keynes

Better later than not at all, here's your preview of this weekend's Steelers hockey action.

Currently on a two game winning streak, and in third place in the standings, Steelers face another testing weekend of hockey action. They start tonight (Saturday) against this little known team:

Yes it's those Bears from down the M1, and this is going to be a tough one as our hosts have been the most consistent team in my eyes this season so far. This will need the performance of the season from Paul Thompson's men if they are to stop the home team. The Panthers have match winners all over the ice from solid goaltending (whether that be Galbraith or Garnett), an exciting import defenceman in Yann Sauvé, and scoring talent a plenty. We will really need to be at our best to deny them a home win but as Fife proved recently, this is not an impossible task. We have the ability, we just need to execute the perfect road game to take the two points.

I would even take a point from an overtime/penalty shot loss to be honest.

After the exertions of Nottingham, Steelers come back home on home ice for Sunday teatime hockey as they lock horns with this particular team:

It's the team with the weird logo, Milton Keynes Lightning. Lightning will be obviously buoyed by the fact that they beat the Steelers 7-2 last Saturday night. However, Sunday is a new hockey game and this time in the confines of the House Of Steel. Steelers know they can ill afford to give the Lightning chances because MK will take them with the fast skating team that they have assembled. A home win is absolutely essential if the Steelers don't want to lose any ground on those above them.

My predictions? Panthers to take the win against us on Saturday, winning 3-2 in overtime. As for Sunday, it will be redemption for the Steelers against the Lightning as the home side will skate to a hard fought 4-1 win.

Lightning strike seven past sorry Steelers

Time for our match report from Saturday night's game at Milton Keynes.

After their European adventure in Denmark, Steelers returned to the bread and butter of the Elite League action. They were looking to record an away win and close in those above them, but standing in their way were Elite League newcomers Milton Keynes Lightning who are coached by GB national coach Pete Russell. Steelers were missing Levi Nelson who was not fit enough to play after his knock in Rungsted against Kurbads. Colton Fretter made his first appearance in the line-up after completing his six game suspension whilst Jonas Westerling was looking to build on his European show. Lightning were at full strength which meant that veteran Ashley Tait iced against one of his old clubs, and former Nottingham Panthers netminder Miika Wiikman was between the pipes.

It was a frenetic start with Lightning looking very dangerous on the counter with pace and putting the Steelers defence under pressure. Fretter almost marked his return to the side with a goal but Wiikman denied him with a pad save at the near post, Lightning then went up the other end of the ice and Christian Isackson skated around the back of the net before spotting Tommy Mele arriving in the slot; and the American rifled a shot past Ervins Mustukovs. Brady Ramsay then a had tilt with Alex Forbes as tempers started to boil up nicely, followed by another confrontation between Andre Deveaux and Lightning captain Kevin King. Deveaux picked up a double minor for roughing and a ten minute misconduct from referee Tom Darnell for his part; whilst King a single roughing minor.

With the game headed into the last five minutes of first period, Steelers were defending a too many men minor when Lightning scored a second goal. Francis Verreault-Paul with a shot from the left circle that into arrowed home. King went close with a shot that appeared to strike the post as the home side started to dominate proceedings. However, the game saw multiple penalties handed out by the referee, Steelers definitely losing their cool for sure with Deveaux leaving the game with a 2+10 check to the head penalty early in the second. With it being his second misconduct of the match; the Canadian centre took no further part in the game. Lightning upped the pressure and scored a third at 28:38 with a ripper of a blue line shot from former Cardiff Devils defenceman Carl Hudson. King made it 4-0 with 5:18 left in the second when Fretter was dispossessed by Hudson and he set up his skipper to light the lamp shorthanded.

There must have been some harsh words in the Steelers locker room at the end of the second as they came out with renewed vigour and put the pressure back on the home side. Having had a "goal" washed out on the end of period buzzer, Steelers snapped Wiikman's planned shutout as Liam Kirk stuffed home a loose puck to net 45:54. Then as Zack Fitzgerald sat a slashing minor, captain Jonathan Phillips scampered away down the wing to reduce the arrears to a two goal game. Just under seven and a half minutes were left when Lightning made it 5-2; a scramble in front of Mustukovs and Mele poked in his second of the night. Steelers were outshooting their opponents but on their tenth powerplay of the night, Lightning scored a sixth with 4:18 left thanks to former Stingray, Panther and Devil Guillaume Doucet. It was a third powerplay strike against the league's best penalty kill. Then just to rub it even more, Mele broke in with 24 seconds left and with all the confidence of man wanting to score a hat-trick: he did just that to net Lightning's seventh.

Time for the statistics:

Goals: Lightning 7 Steelers 2

Steelers Scoring: Westerling 0+2, Kirk 1+0, J.Phillips 1+0, Aarssen 0+1, Matheson 0+1 .

Lightning Scoring: Mele 3+1, Doucet 1+2, Hudson 1+1, King 1+1, Phillips 0+2, Verreault-Paul 1+0, Kearney 0+1, Isackson 0+1.

Shots On Goal:  Lightning 29 Steelers 46

Powerplay: Steelers 0 from 5 (0% conversion), Lightning 3 from 10 (30% conversion)

Penalty Minutes called: Lightning 19 Steelers 59

Steelers Goaltender Stats: Mustukovs 22 Saves (463), GAA: 7.00 (2.51), Save Percentage 75.90% (91.30%)

Man of the Match: Jonathan Phillips (Steelers), Tommy Mele (Lightning)

Big Match Preview: Milton Keynes and Coventry

Welcome once more everybody for the preview of this weekend's action for the Steelers.

After the European Tour to the land of bacon and the Little Mermaid, also known as Denmark and Copenhagen respectively, it's time to get back to the bread and butter of Elite League for the Steelers. They currently lie in fourth place in the League standings, five points behind the leaders who are those Bears from down the M1. However, with hockey being the way it acts, that could easily change at the click of some fingers. There's no reason to actually panic.

This weekend is another testing one though with games that we could easily come unstuck with.

Saturday night and the Steelers are on the road, it's a visit to this place:

It's our first visit to Buckinghamshire, or Concrete Cow City aka Milton Keynes in the Elite League ever. Our last visit there was way back in 1996 in the final season of the then British Premier League; the following season was the initial season of the BISL. Back then the Lightning were known as the Milton Keynes Kings for whom a certain stripey played a single game for in 1998-99. No names but he does spend a lot of time out of the country with work and officiating if that helps.

Yet both games in Milton Keynes in 1995-96 ended in draws. A high scoring 8-8 followed by a 3-3. Our record overall there in all games is a very impressive 7-0-2. So by rights, the form book should point to a road win for the Steelers. As you know, it means naff all. Lightning pushed us to a 4-3 win at Ice Sheffield earlier in the season and are coached by GB coach Peter Russell. They have experienced EIHL players in former Panthers netminder Miika Wiikman and former Cardiff Devils Carl Hudson, Guillaume Doucet and Denny Kearney. Impressive Lewis Hook is a hot prospect reckoned to a GB internationalist sooner rather than later. Oh and there's also Matt Nickerson...

After Saturday, the House of Steel welcomes back the European heroes for the first time since they went on their Danish crusade. Our opponents are this merry bunch:

Yes it's the Coventry Blaze. We can admit for sure that this is a bit of a better team than last season's but then again that team flattered to deceive. The roster has seen a number of changes, obviously Matt Marquardt's move here is well known but no longer at Coventry are Brian Stewart (Guildford), Robin Bergman (Rungsted), cousins Almeida and Syner (back in North America) and Russ Cowley (retired) to name some departures. However, they are still as inconsistent as always and can turn in one great performance followed by one absolute shocker.

Play to our strengths, we are able to beat them convincingly although Kevin Nastiuk is in some eyes (mine included): an upgrade on that behemoth known as Brian whose meltdowns were the stuff of comedy gold. Perhaps he should form a double act with Omar Pacha...

My predictions? Steelers to edge the Milton Keynes game 3-2 after overtime, then to see off the Blaze rather comfortably back in S9 by 5-2. I'll take a four point weekend but it might have to be a bit a battle in the trenches to get it especially in MK and if Wiikman is on form.

Last gasp Armstrong strikes against Lightning

Time for the match report against the Milton Keynes Lightning.

On Wednesday night, Steelers looked to arrest their recent dip in form with a home game at Ice Sheffield against the second of the Elite League newcomers, Milton Keynes Lightning. Lightning came into Sheffield on the back of an excellent four point weekend, and with wins already this season against Belfast and Cardiff. Steelers welcomed back both Zack Fitzgerald and Liam Kirk who missed the second of the two games against the Giants whilst Kieran Brown was also dressed for action. Defenceman Scott Aarssen who exited the home game against the Giants in the first period, did not ice. Lightning were at full strength and included former Steelers forward Ashley Tait in their team as well as former Panthers goalie Miika Wiikman who started the game in nets.

Needing a quick start, Steelers were ahead at 5:07. Defencemen Joonas Ronnberg and Mark Matheson combined and it was Colton Fretter who was on hand to tip in his sixth goal of the season in all competitions past Wiikman. However, Lightning weren't behind for long when they levelled just two and half minutes later. Quin Pompi found Ludwig Karlsson and his excellent feed set up French-Canadian Francois Verreault-Paul to light the lamp beyond Mustukovs. It was no more than the hard working visitors deserved, and less than a minute they took the lead thanks to former Manchester Storm defenceman Paul Phillips whose shot from the point found its way home.

Steelers weren't at their best but equalised at 10:38. Matt Nickerson was sitting a high sticking minor, and it was Fretter and Matheson who got the helpers on Matt Marquardt's first Steelers goal. The big number 37 getting the decisive touch out front. Lightning took the lead in the opening 53 seconds of the second period, captain Kevin King with a shot from the left wing that beat Mustukovs short side and probably one that the Steelers goaltender will want back. However the Latvian was in great form after that, and turned out away 15 more shots on as the visitors dominated the second period play and took a deserved lead going into the final twenty.

The home team knew they had to pull their collective socks up in the final period to avoid a third successive loss, and they did so although to some people's opinions: hardly convincingly. With Mustukovs denying Milton Keynes at one end, Steelers pressed on at the other end and 47:30 were back on parity. Ben O'Connor created the chance, and Armstrong poked it home past Wiikman. Referee Tom Pering had called very few penalties as the game entered it's final five minutes but then called three in the space of as many minutes. With Steelers having killed off Levi Nelson's interference minor, they were left on a 5 on 3 advantage and the powerplay clicked once more to deny Lightning a point and overtime: Armstrong picking up the pieces to score his seventh of the season and secure two much needed points.

Time for the statistics:

Goals: Steelers 4 Lightning 3

Steelers Scoring: Armstrong 2+0, Marquardt 1+1, Fretter 1+1, Matheson 0+2, Valdix 0+1, Ronnberg 0+1, O'Connor 0+1.

Lightning Scoring: Phillips 1+1, Hudson 0+2, King 1+0, Verreault-Paul 0+1, Foster 0+1, Pompi 0+1, Karlsson 0+1.

Shots On Goal: Steelers 27, Lightning 32

Powerplay: Steelers 2 from 5 (40% conversion), Lightning 0 from 2 (0% conversion)

Penalty Minutes called: Steelers 6, Lightning 10

Steelers Goaltender Stats: Mustukovs 29 Saves (163 overall), GAA: 3.00 (2.41), Save Percentage 89.70% (92.10%)

Man of the Match: John Armstrong (Steelers), Paul Phillips (Lightning)

Now for some of your thoughts:

Adrian Lee: "Just one comment. Why does it take the Steelers 45 minutes to wake up every match?"

Andy Roberts: "Great road game by MKL. They deserved a point minimum from that game, Steelers very lucky to get 2 points."

Nathan: "We looked lost for large parts of the game. No leadership or direction coming from the bench, or so it would seem. On a positive note, it was good to see Fitzgerald back and playing well."

Bryan Ibbotson: "Think the Lightning will think they deserved something out of that game; and I'll be inclined to agree with them. Great game though they played."
