The Sheffield Knights Take On Swiss Side Chaux De Fonds

Look At The European Game That Took Place At Queens Road (Skate Central) Between The Sheffield Knights And Chaux De Fonds On Saturday.

Saturday 12th September the Knights took on Swiss side Chaux De Fonds in a game that promised to be challenging for the players of both the Knights and the Lancers in which was a mixed squad announced by Head Coach David Grant.

I wont be going too much into the game because it would take forever. The game ended in a 21-0 defeat for the Sheffield Knights but lots of positives were taken out of the game by the Knights. David Grant has already said that the result was irrelevant because we knew we was going to lose it was about us getting some massively valuable experience. Chaux De Fonds didn't take their foot of the gas all nights and kept coming with everything they've got for the full 45 minutes but the Knights didn't give up they played until the final buzzer, didn't let their heads drops and gave it their all. The Score line may look bad from the outside but in our camp we have took so much out of that game which we will look to implement into our game to make us a better team.

You don't get any better by just playing teams at your level to improve you need to play the best available teams and that was certainly what we did and what we will also look to do in the future with further European trips. The knights want to become the best club possible and by doing that we do need to play these sort of teams more often.

19th September the G Casino Cup takes place at Simply Skate in Rotherham where the Knights have two teams taking part as well as Shaw Millionaires who are entering two teams and then the North East Dekstars who are coming down from Gateshead. There may be more teams involved but I'm not sure myself. If anyone would like to come down the tournament is schedule 9am till 5pm but will probably finish before, it is also free entry and after the Sheffield Steelers take on the Coventry Blaze at the Arena at 7pm if you wanted to hang about.

Last Saturday against Chaux De Fonds really was a learning curve and a great experience and really hope to be able to do it again in the future against them or other European teams. Every time I pull on the Knights jersey it is a proud moment for myself and I know the same can be said for all of my team mates. I was so proud how everyone played despite the score line because like I've already said the score line was irrelevant.

Lancers Secure Their First Ever Victory Against Hoods

The Sheffield Lancers were going into their second season after losing all of their fixtures last season and after a change in the coach staff and a new bundle of players it was set to be a promising start for the Knights development team.

The lancers took a two goal lead early in the 1st period courtesy off Adam Cooper who went top shelf within 59 second and Jaret Rose who scored his 1st of three goals after just five minutes on the power play. Nottingham Hoods did pull a goal back to go into the 1st period break down 2-1 and that was scored by Francois Gallant timed at 11.59.

After conceding with a second left on the clock in the 1st period the Lancers put heir foot back on the gas early in the second period with quick goals coming from debutant Aiden Paget who scored his 1st of the game from the high slot and then just a minute later Jaret Rose scored his second of the game after receiving a pass from debutant Wayne Newman from in front of his own goal and Rose timed his finish to perfection to give the Lancers a 4-1 Lead. James Duffy pulled a second goal back for the Hoods scoring his first of the game at 17:54 firing a snap shot through the pads of Daniel Croskell. A third debutant Michael Henderson took his first penalty of his Lancers career and Aiden Paget went on to score short handing for his 2nd of the game an in quick succession Aaron Bowler fired a shot over the block of the Hoods netminders to make it 6-2 and then Jaret Rose completed his hat-trick in the final minute of the 2nd period to give the Lancers a 7-2 lead going into the third period.

Hoods wasn't going to give up in the third period though when they tried to mount a come back and at 29:14 James Duffy was fed in for his second off the game and placed his shot high over the blocker off Croskell to make it 7-4. Sebastian Turek made it 7-5 at the 30:25 mark when he fired a big slap shot past Croskell who didn't have a clue till the Hoods player were celebrating. The home side finished of the scoring when again Sebastian Turek fired a second slap shot to make it 7-5 at 34:31 and that prompted Lancers head coach David Grant to call a time out as his players were look nervous but the visitors hung on to secure their first victory of the season 7-5.

FINAL SCORE: Nottingham Hoods 5-7 Sheffield Lancers

A cracking start to the season for the Lancers who really did look like a new team and you can tell that by the faces of the players at the end of the game. Next up for the club is a European friendly on Saturday 12th September when the Knights take on La Chaux-de-Fonds from Switzerland at Queens Road (Skate Central) in Sheffield just next to the G Casino and we hope to see as many people there as possible.

An Introduction To Ball Hockey

Have you ever wanted to play Ice Hockey but cant skate and cant afford all the gear? Well maybe Ball Hockey is the sport for you!.

Ball Hockey really is exactly the same, same rules just less equipment when it comes to competitive games all you need is Stick, Gloves, Football or Hockey shin pads and an Helmet with or without a visor that's your choice but if your under the age of 18 or a female you have to have a full cage on. That's really all you need equipment wise a lot less than Ice and Roller! I'd also recommend a box to protect the valuables.

Ball Hockey is growing at an amazing rate with teams popping up all over the country. I play for the Sheffield Knights who also have a development team called the Sheffield Lancers who play separate leagues game too the knights and despite the different name wear the same uniform because when it comes to competitions we all play under the banner of the Knights. Were apart of something called the Yorkshire Ball Hockey Club which includes the Knights (and Lancers), Kingston Royals from Hull who are just about up and running and Leeds Centurions who are currently being set-up and all that is in an attempt to increase sport. There is also a fourth team in the arena that aren't part of the Yorkshire Ball Hockey Club and that is the Sheffield Steelers who used to be the Rotherham Renegade before EIHL side Sheffield Steelers took them to play under their banner in which they have started a youth academy so it's obviously your choice on who you'd like to play for but here at Frozen Steel we will be covering Sheffield Knights, Sheffield Lancers, Leeds Centurions (when there finally up and running) and the Kingston Royals and maybe the Sheffield Steelers A and B team but I'd need the editors to get in contact to see if they'd like extra coverage.

If you wanted to try the sport and your in either of the three areas then I'd contact the Centurions and Royal about going training with them when there all set up, Kingston Royal are just waiting on a venue and there all set to go but if you don't want to wait the Sheffield Knights train on a Friday night at the Simply Skate Arena in Rotherham 9.30pm till 10.30pm and at the Knights we don't care if you've never even held a stick in your life we want you to come on down and give it a go.

Harry Verity attended his first Knights training session last Friday and here is what he had to say.

"On Friday I went training with the Knights and to be honest I had a really good time. I'd never played hockey before and I was worried that I was going to look a right idiot. To my surprise everyone was very supportive and I ended up having a right good laugh (despite the difficult training exercises.) I learnt that ball hockey is a lot harder than it looks, but with the training that is on offer with the Knights I am certain that I will improve in the future, the Knights are a good group of lads, and I would definitely recommend joining if you are up for playing hockey and if enjoy a good laugh. I'm certainly coming back next week and I just want to thank Tom opening my eyes to the world of ball hockey."
You can find the Sheffield Knights on Facebook at https://www.facebook.com/sheffieldknightsbhc or you can follow them on Twitter at @Sheffknights. You can also visit the Knights website http://www.sheffieldknights.co.uk/ so look forward to our ball hockey coverage with our first coverage coming on the 12th September when the Knights take on Swiss side La Chaux-de-Fonds at Queens Road, Sheffield face-off at 5pm so get down and support them.

This is a promo video in preparation for that game on the 12th

The Central Conference for the 2015/2016 season has increased from 10 teams last year to 15 this year with there being 7 teams in Division 1 and 8 teams in Division 2. The league format will remain the same with promotion/relegation with the winner of Division 2 automatically going up and the 7th place team in Division 1 automatically going down. There will also be something new to contend with as 6th place team in Division 1 and the 2nd place team in Division 2 will play a promotion with the victorious team either avoiding relegation or earning promotion.

The teams taking part in the Central Conference:-

Division 1

Nottingham Werewolves, Nottingham Jackals, Sheffield Steelers A, Greasley Bears, South Notts Outlaws, Sheffield Knights and Nottingham Direwolves.

Division 2

Nottingham Timberwolves, Clifton Cobras, Sheffield Lancers, Nottingham Hoods, Sheffield Steelers B, Shaw Millionaires, South Notts Reapers and Slovan Manchester.

I for one am really excited about covering the Central Conference for the Knights and Lancers as it looks to be an exciting season.

Steelers BHC Join The Frozen Steel Family

Today, the Steelers announced that they had taken the Rotherham Renegades ball hockey team into the Steelers family. Well, we don't like to be left behind. I'd like to personally welcome the Steelers BHC into the Frozen Steel Family. Here, team members/organisers Joe Hattersley and Tom Merriman give us an introduction to the team and the sport.

The Sheffield Steelers B.H.C are a newly established Ball Hockey team, previously known as the Rotherham Renegades.  As the Renegades, the club enjoyed great success in its first 12 months operating, even securing the Tier 2 national title in May of this year.

Moving the club forward, an exciting opportunity presented itself to become the Sheffield Steelers Ball Hockey team.  Assistant Captain Dan Blair brought about this exciting venture, through sponsorship of the Steelers Ice Hockey team with Constellation Lighting.

The aim of the club moving forward is to enter multiple teams into tournaments and league competition and introduce a junior system as Ball Hockey grows in the UK and the South Yorkshire area. This will allow the club to grow and expand the brand of the Sheffield Steelers in not just the local community, but further afield as our teams enter national competitions.

Ball Hockey in the UK is governed by Ball Hockey UK (BHUK) and is played on a national level with teams competing from across the UK in such areas as London/Cardiff and Newcastle. The Renegades currently compete in the BHUK Central Conference with teams from Nottingham and Sheffield. As well as the league format, teams compete in national, qualifying tournaments throughout the season, culminating in the national finals, which are held at the Queens Road rink, Sheffield in the spring of each year.

So what is Ball Hockey?

Ball hockey is essentially Ice Hockey without the ice. The rules are very similar and it’s played out of dedicated rinks like Simply Skate Arena, or normal sports halls. Ball Hockey is also popular across the globe, in places such as mainland Europe and the United States/Canada.

The Steelers Ball Hockey team will continue to train and play out of Simply Skate Arena in Rotherham.  We currently train on a weekly basis, every Thursday night, 9.00 – 10.30pm.  The current price of a training session is £5, with the first session free of charge.  The main advantages to Ball Hockey is that it’s more accessible, as all you need to start is a stick which cuts down on an obvious expense when looking to start/try a new sport.
