Midweek Victory for the Steelers v Caps: Match Report

Wednesday 29th January 2014 - Sheffield Steelers (20-11-3) v Edinburgh Capitals (10-25-2) @ Ice Sheffield. Face off: 7.30pm

One of Sheffield game in hands on the Belfast Giants on a Wednesday night and they came out of it with the two points but still leaves them 15 points of the league leaders going into the double header against Belfast Giants on Saturday and Sunday.

This game got underway at Ice Sheffield with Frank Doyle and Tomas Hiadlovsky in between the pipes for both teams, the first really opportunity of the game fell to the Capitals as Tomas Horna tipped just wide of Frank Doyle's goal, but Sheffield got to work being denied on three separate account as a shot from Tim Spencer was deflected high and over followed by Legue shooting wide and then a fantastic play by Danny Meyers as he worked hard to keep the puck in the zone to play in Phillips who also saw his shot saved from just in front of the goal. Sheffield were awarded with the first power play of the night as Portwood was called for hooking on 5:44 but it was poor power play by the home side as they couldn't find the shooting lanes and as the Capitals were back to full strength it was down to Frank Doyle to save a couple of shots with the pick of the bunch being of Cesky from the point. Mid-way through the 1st session Hewitt and Nell drove Hiadlovsky's net and he was let off the hook for a poor clearance as the two Steelers forward cant put the puck in the net. The best opportunity of the period fell to Jonathan Phillips after Gord Baldwin had skated coast to coast to square it to the welsh man but Phillips couldn't get a tip on it to shoot into the open goal but Phillips made up for that miss moments later with a shot block to clear the zone. Edinburgh ended the period on the the penalty kill when Hartmann was called two minutes for holding on 19:33 but we'd go into the first intermission with the score at 0-0.

Edinburgh began the second period with 1:33 left on the penalty kill but they would successfully kill the penalty and it wouldn't be long till they had another player in the box when Zembergs was battling with Stefan Meyer on the corner when he was penalised for tripping the Sheffield forward. It was a penalty kill that ended up being all about Hiadlovsky as he had to be awake to save several attempts by the home side and it was from a Hiadlovsky save just as the Capitals were back to full strength when Marc Fowley got himself onto a 1 on 1 chance but saw his attempt padded wide by Doyle. Marcis Zembergs was also having a big say in the game as some great skating from him got him past three Steelers player to see his back hand saved. Stefan Meyer who was back in the line-up after having the weekend off was as always putting a shift in and some great strength by the forward had him keeping the puck behind Hiadlovsky's net before Safar deliberately knocked the net off to stop proceedings which saw the Edinburgh player thrown in the box but again Hiadlovsky stood up tall to keep out Sheffield taking the Capitals penalty kill to 4 out of 4. On 36:53 Legue was battling for the puck and it seemed he had won the puck fairly off Leinweber but was thrown into the box for hooking but that only spurred Steelers on when on 38:13 Meyers played the puck to Goertzen who skates 2 on 1 into the Edinburgh zone to then play it to right to DiCasmirro who fired a one timer over the shoulder of Hiadlovsky to give a Sheffield a one goal lead shorthanded after Edinburgh had failed to keep the puck in the zone. Sheffield would get back to full strength and one more opportunity fell to Zembergs who was on a breakaway but some fantastic defending by Mark Thomas knocked the puck of the tip of his stick, Sheffield would take a 1-0 lead into the 2nd intermission.

Third period got underway and it was mainly controlled by Sheffield with an effort from Lacroix getting padded wide and then a fantastic play by Chad Langlais kept the puck in the Edinburgh zone only for Stefan Meyer to get tripped by Jan Safar which put Sheffield on the power play and it would start well for the home side as Baldwin would pass to Fata on the blue line who fired a slap shot towards goal only for it be saved by Hiadlovsky but from the resulting face-off won by Jason Hewitt allowed Tim Spencer to fire a power play goal past Hiadlovsky to give Sheffield a two goal lead on 46:29. Sheffield would try to carry on where they left off as Legue would play in Meyer but wouldn't be able to get his shot away and then in the next attack Edinburgh would hit the pipe work and would then get another power play as Phillips was called for slashing, it was a good penalty kill for the Steelers as Spencer had to block a shot from Horna and then Dobron rattled the cross bar with a fierce slap shot and that was followed by a strong glove save by Frank Doyle of Hartmann. Edinburgh got another two chances with the man advantages but wouldn't be able to make either count and then in the final minutes Phil Hill played to DiCasmirro who found himself 1 on 1 with Hiadlovsky but couldn't get his back hand shot on target. Sheffield would see out the remainder of the game to win 2-0 as Edinburgh didn't get the opportunity to pull Hiadlovsky, so on a Wednesday night in Sheffield it was an important two points for the Sheffield Steelers.
