SIHA Roundup - Sens Gun Down Jets, Juniors Roundup

Ice & Slice reports back from the action at SIHA, from Sunday onwards.

Senators bounced back to winning ways against Hull Jets on Sunday at Ice Sheffield.

In a goalless first period they were rarely seriously threatened and did look the better of the two teams.

They stepped it up to race into a three goal lead in the first four minutes of the second period with a Sergevs "Stevie" Jegorovs hat-trick. This triggered Hull into life, from which point the game was a bit more lively and entertaining. Kieran Beach scored a nice goal to pull one back for Hull but this was countered by Joel Aheran's goal for Senators. Hull then scored another good goal through Jordan Fisher with just under to minutes remaining of the period with the score 4-2 in Senators favour.

The final period was end to end but although Hull at times matched Senators they weren't really ever any better but they can't be faulted for their effort and commitment, even when Josh Gent scored to make it 5-2 to Sens their response was swift with another goal, this time on the powerplay, scored by Declan Pearson. They couldn't make further inroads into the Senators defence that looked strong and broke out with confidence to set up some good opportunities that went begging for Sheffield. After Hull pulled their netminder, Charlie Thompson found Joel Ahearn to shoot into an empty net for a 6-3 victory that was deserved, even though they weren't at their best.

The win was what mattered after the previous night's defeat to Solihull so in that regard it was a job well done.

Ironically, Senators next home game is against Hull Jets next Sunday with the same 1.30pm face off.

SUNDAY

Sheffield Rapiers 16's A travelled to Telford on Sunday and didn't make enough of their chances in a goalless first period but got into their stride to go into the final period 2-0 up with goals from Liam Kirk & Finlay Ulrick. Kyle Watson, another from Finlay Ulrick plus one from Josh Pigott made the game safe for Rapiers. Telford pulled one back before Josh Pigott's second wrapped things up for a Rapiers 6-1 win.

Sheffield Steelhawks 18's A were given a tough game in Nottingham but eventually came out on top 5-3 with netminder Tom Barkworth getting the nod for the Man of the Match award for Steelhawks.  Cole Shudra grabbed two goals with Connor Parker, Liam Kirk & Jack Dransfield all grabbing a goal apiece.

Sheffield Samurai U10's travelled to Whitley Bay to take on Billingham Stars and a combined team from Whitley Bay/Bradford in what were by all accounts good games for the Samurai with Henry Harris & Fin Williams winning the spirit of the game awards.

All in all, a very good weekend for SIHA...long may it continue!

TUESDAY

Sheffield Sabres 14's B faced an "away" game against Sutton Sting and put in an impressive performance to run out worthy 4-2 winners at Ice Sheffield on Tuesday evening.

Sabres just about edged a pretty even first period which was reflective of the 2-1 score line with Ben O'Brien & Ethan Mockford giving Sheffield a two goal lead before Sutton pulled one back.

Sting started the second period well, they looked strong but couldn't make their spell of pressure count as Sabres came back to be the stronger and better side with some good chances to score; one of which was put away nicely by Ben Crowther to make it 3-1 to Sabres.

Into the final period and Sabres came out with all guns blazing with a high intensity first half of the period in which Sutton were at times struggling to cope with and were finding it difficult to clear their zone but deserve praise for hanging in there to keep Sabres scoring down to just one goal scored by Matt Hirst who made it 4-1. Sutton continued to claw their way back into the game and were rewarded when Garcon pulled one back to reduce the deficit.

Sting enjoyed a good spell of pressure and had two chances to reduce the deficit further but Sabres held strong and regained their composure to see the game out to claim a well deserved 4-2 victory.

The spirit of the Game Award could have gone to any Sheffield player but it was given to netminder Charlie Renzi, deserved too for his competent display between the pipes. A very enjoyable game of hockey for which both teas deserve praise...

Final Score: Sheffield Sabres 4 Sutton Sting 4

This is the second time I have seen Sabres this season, they have a good squad of players of which quite a few are first year 14's and are well worth watching...their next home fixture is on Saturday 8th November v Whitley Bay facing off at 12.05 so why not pop down and have a nosey! Your support would be very much appreciated.
