Academy and NIHL Update - 13 September 2015

This weekend saw SIHA’s two senior teams, Spartans & Senators, go toe to toe in an intriguing double header across at Ice Sheffield. Spartans will be looking to make the play-offs once again whilst Senators face a tough season ahead in the NIHL Moralee Conference after promotion last season from the Laidler Conference.

Ultimately class told in the end as Spartans bagged four points with two 7-1 victories to make a solid start to the season whilst getting two competitive games under the belt with almost a full roster after two short benched challenge games to warm up for what will be a tough season. Meanwhile Sens will have learned a lot from this weekend but they deserve credit for a markedly improved performance on Sunday from the previous night. It is however fair to say that neither team were at their best but Spartans fully deserved their two wins this weekend.

Sens were the home team on Saturday and Spartans had started the better but despite some good spells of pressure and possession they only had Elliott Knell’s goal to show for their efforts. The goal triggered a response from Senators who came more into the game and finish the stronger of the two teams in the closing stages and imagine that they will have been the happier of the two teams at the break.

Spartans stepped it up a few gears to dominate the second period with goals from Stuart Brittle, Will Barron, Tom Parkinson & Nick Manning making it 5-0 in their favour. Had it not been for the efforts of Mark Hartley in Sens goal the score line could have been far greater.

Senators came out a different team in the final period and made more of a game of things and pulled a well taken goal back through Nathan Britton. It was a lot more even this period with both teams creating chances but Spartans always looked the more likely to score which proved to be the case when Maros Stefanco & Will Barron making it 7-1 which was to be the final score resulting in a deserved victory for Spartans with Maros Stefanco picking up the Man of the Match beers whilst Jonny Bell was awarded it for Senators after a solid performance.

On Sunday it was Spartans privilege to be the home team and although the outcome was the same it came about in very different circumstances. Spartans were quick out of the blocks to race to a three goal lead through Ollie Barron with Maros Stefanco adding a brace. Sens weathered the storm and pulled it back to 3-1 with a nice goal from ex Spartan Alex Harding in his first season back with the Sens.

In the second period Spartans dominated proceedings but were struggling to turn that dominance into goals being guilty of missing several guilt edged chances. They were also made to work hard against a stubborn Senator rear-guard inspired by an outstanding performance between the pipes by Mark Hartley. However they couldn’t hold out as Spartans patience held out to see Ollie Barron & Nick Manning add two late goals to make it 5-1 at the end of the second period. 

Senators battled away with credit but ultimately were undone by some solid Spartans defending and two well worked & quick fire goals; the first from Will Barron with Stuart Brittle scoring an unassisted shorthanded goal to make it 7-1 to Spartans. Maros Stefanco was once again named as Spartans Man of the Match with Sergevs Jegorovs receiving the accolade for Senators.

SIHA WC Report

Spartans were the winners of the inaugural Sheffield Winter Classic Game when they beat Senators 5-1 at Ice Sheffield last Saturday. Considering the terrible weather conditions there was a healthy crowd to witness was a great occasion.

Spartans had the better of the first period but were pushed all the way by Senators, who on a different day may have had more to show for their efforts but Spartans made their possession count to go in from the first period 2-0 up thanks to goals from Will Barron & Jonathan Kirk.

The second period was a lot tighter and even in terms of possession and chances with a Sergevs Jegorovs for Senators making it a very interesting contest.  Sens enjoyed a good spell following on from their goal but Spartans weathered the storm to go on and gain the upper hand to go into the final period 4-1 after Stuart Brittle had netted twice, his second a nice short-handed goal late on in the period.

Spartans controlled large chunks of the third period and looked comfortable on the puck but Senators never gave up and kept them on their toes and up to the task. Cole Shudra made it 5-1 half way through the period to basically kill the game and make sure the trophy landed into Spartans hands.

An enjoyable game of hockey and one in which it was clear both teams wanted to win and played with passion which is what Sheffield hockey is all about and something both teams deserve praise and credit for.

SIHA Winter Classic - Mawer v Mawer

"The inaugural Winter Classic between the two SIHA senior teams promises to be a great spectacle of grass roots, home-grown hockey talent.

To add a bit of spice to the mix this game will divide a family; as for the first time ever, brothers, Danny and Mike Mawer will face off against each other.  The Grimsby natives began playing from a young age as their father was the head coach of the local ice hockey club.  Despite the legendary small ice pad, both players developed well throughout their junior careers and left the seaside town with ample experience and a good level of skill.  What is clear about both the Mawer boys is that they are both natural born leaders, with an incredible work ethic and a truly inspirational positive outlook on any situation; they are a credit to their parents, Jayne and Steve.

Sens Head Coach Andy Ellis has the scoop on both players having coached Danny for his first two-seasons in the Steel City after arriving as a fresh-faced 18 year old, ready to discover the bright lights of Sheffield as a student at Sheffield Hallam University.  Ellis added "Danny is a fantastic team player; he works unbelievable hard on and off the ice.  He is vocal in the room and fires his team-mates up, no matter the situation.  He was the first ever Sens captain and lead from the front every game.  After a successful first season, he split his time between both teams in his second term and then moved up to the Spartans full time in his 3rd year here in Sheffield.  I'm glad I had an opportunity to coach Danny and play a small part in his development within the SIHA.

Two years after Danny arrived, his 'little' brother followed in his footsteps coming to South Yorkshire in 2012.  Now in his 3rd season with the Sens, Mike has been a mainstay on the 'grinding line' and has seen his points' production increase each year.  Ellis had this to say about the younger brother "Mawler is such a great guy to have on your team, he is a leader, a motivator and he personifies what being a Senator is all about.  He was the deserving first winner of the 'Sens Man of the Year' award last season for his commitment to the team and he is following on in that same way this year, leading from the front and picking his team up when required."

Spartans Coach Martin White added; In the 19 years I’ve been coaching I’ve yet to meet a more enthusiastic player than Danny Mawer. His level of commitment to both himself and his team may be matched by some, but I’d be very surprised it’s surpassed by any.

Danny is the type of personality every coach wants and needs on the roster; eager, dedicated, supportive, entertaining, and ever improving. Danny is the definition of a team player, and can be heard pushing and supporting his team mates shift in shift out of every game, whether it’s a key league fixture or a pre-season challenge. These are the same traits shared by his brother Mikey. The way these two guys can motivate their teammates; ever philosophical, ever positive and always with honesty & passion is truly amazing and has endeared them to both changing rooms and supporters of both teams. They bring different things to the table for their respective teams but Mikey’s reassuring presence & mind set rubs off onto his teammates and he has become an integral part of Senators continuous rise.

If you are unsure which one is which, Mikey is the one with the epic beard…as for Danny, he is keen to improve and learn from every situation and is relentless in his self-assessment and always has a pertinent question to hand. His improvement over the last two seasons has been both measurable and constant, and over this period he has developed from a dressing room legend to a steady physical stay at home defender who’s also a dressing room legend!

The first with a kind or supportive word, he’s also responsible for some of the more memorable maxims that float around our dressing room with the printable ones including “20 miles, 20 smiles” and “let’s make steel” (soon corrected by the Sheffield born players to forge). He leads the team chants with gusto and has often left himself hoarse and in pain such is the power of his voice!

The only area that Danny really could work harder on is his signing voice, he may well tell you different but it’s lousy! Despite hearing renditions of 50 Cent’s “Many Men” and the Christmas Classic “Little Donkey” I’m yet to be convinced of his stage potential. Although, if he applies the same dedication and enthusiasm to his singing he could one day grace a Butlins near you. I can’t and don’t want to imagine the Spartans without Danny, he truly is #allspartans.

We had the chance to ask Danny & Mike a few questions regarding their brother and the upcoming Winter Classic Game. Here’s what they had to say…

Who is the better player?

Danny...Tough question! I think we are completely different players due to positions/ roles.  We both work hard and like to play a physical game, although he suffers from ankle weakness and brick hands. So I’d say that I’m better.

Mikey…I'm bigger, stronger, better looking, better facial hair, alpha male and oh I can score. So I'd probably say me.

What are the strengths your brother brings to the game?

Danny…It’s got to be his size (I think he must be the milkman’s). He’s got a big body and its effective when he crashes the net. It’s about time that he started throwing it around a little bit more though. He ran me over in a scrimmage in the off season so I know he’s more than capable of it.

Mikey…Dan's a great team player and he brings a physical presence to his team, his work ethic is his main strength as he will never quit and he's not afraid to stick up for his team mates. 

How do you think Spartans & Senators are faring this season and what are your hopes & expectations?

Danny…This season is going pretty well. We have had some big wins and some games that we feel we should have maybe taken more away from. I think we have good depth through the team this year and I believe that it is a realistic expectation and team goal to make the playoffs. We just have to stay focused and turn up every night.

Mikey…We have had a very busy season so far this year and I can truly say it's the best Senators Squad I have played with, we have had a great start to the season and we are currently battling for a promotion spot, hopefully at the end of this season we will get promotion and will be playing against the Spartans next seasons.

The Spartans are a solid squad with great depth, they have recently stepped there game up and are producing great hockey, I'm sure the Spartans will be battling to make the playoffs this season and they are very capable of achieving this.  

What does the Winter Classic Game mean to you & your teams?

Danny…The Winter Classic means we can’t eat and drink too much on Boxing Day. On a serious note I think the boys are getting quite excited for the game now. There has been quite a lot of hype around it. Due to it being the first Winter Classic it will be good to get a win and finish 2014 on a high.

Mikey…The Winter Classic is a great chance for the two teams to play each other in a competitive match, it's going to be a fun game to play but without a doubt it'll be a battle, I'm sure both teams will want to win this game as much as each other for the bragging rights of the club. For me the match will be a very fun but I'm playing to win.

Who will win the Winter Classic Game and why?

Danny…Spartans because we hustle, hit and never quit.

Mikey…Tough question! Personally I think we will win the match, we have nothing to lose and playing with the Sens character every player will do whatever it takes to win. 

Any funny story you would like to share in relation to your brother...hockey or otherwise?

Danny…One story I laugh about is what he did at Christmas a few years ago. We got up to see if Santa had been and he disappeared to get my present. It turned out he went to the freezer in the kitchen to get some ice cubes and wrapped them up for me...think he was trying to imply that I don’t get on much!

Mikey…I played against Spartans last season for the under 20's! First shift I saw Dan with the puck with his head down and I decided to rock him, in the same shift I had the puck and I saw him straight lining for me, he attempted to get revenge but ended with him looking silly. So I can officially confirm I'm the bigger stronger brother! 

You can’t beat a bit of rivalry, even more so when two brothers go head to head and come the 27^th December you can be sure that both Danny & Mikey will have their teams fired up to go out and win!

Spartans & Senators Round-Up 29th & 30th

In what were mixed fortunes for Sheffield’s two NIHL teams both did themselves proud with good solid performances from which the final scores didn’t tell the full picture…

Sheffield Spartans triumphed 10-4 in Altrincham against Manchester Minotaurs on Saturday evening. Spartans dominated large parts of the game with some great hockey but also hustled to grind out the goals that secured the win.

The first period started with both teams enjoying spells of possession but Ollie Barron pounced to pop one in from close range timed 6.42. Prior to that Minotaurs had created the best opportunity but a great save from Brandon Stones denied them what looked like a certain goal. Spartans slowly gained the upper hand to completely dominate the period but only had Andy Turner’s clever tip in on the powerplay on 14.59 to show for their efforts and it was fair too say that they’d let Minotaurs off the hook at 2-0.

Manchester started the brighter of the two teams but found themselves 3-0 down when a lovely pass from Nick Manning split Minotaurs defence to find Will Barron who put away his one on one chance away despite Fox’s best efforts to keep the puck out. Just as Spartans were settling Minotaurs hit back with a Tomas Hnilca powerplay goal on 24.16 but Spartans response was swift with two quick fire goals to make it 5-1. James Maughan scored on 25.50, followed by a well worked goal that saw Alex Harding score on 26.18. Spartans had some excellent chances to increase their lead but it wasn’t all one way and they were grateful for some solid netminding from Brandon Stones and Matt Croyle, after changing netminders, to take the sting out of the game at times.     

Spartans controlled the lion’s share of the period and when Shaun Wild on 46.06, then Ollie Barron on 47.59, Spartans looked home & dry. That was until Lee Pollitt scored a very good goal shortly after timed 48.34. Minotaurs almost added another but a good save from Matt Croyle denied them and seemed to stir Spartans back into life to again put Manchester under pressure and to go on and make the game certain. Nick Whyatt scored a good goal on 55.21 to make it 8-2 which was swiftly followed by Dave Pyatt’s effort on 55.49. Scott Morris scored on 58.19 to make it 10-2 and what seemed to be the last of the action. However a lapse in concentration saw Minotaurs pull one back with just 10 seconds left on the clock. Spartans were to receive another shock when they switched off for Manchester to add another 7 seconds later to pull it back to 10-4 which was the final score! Manchester Minotaurs 4 Spartans 10

Sheffield Senators faced a tough test in Solihull against the unbeaten Barons and despite losing 7-2 put up a creditable performance to make their opponents work hard for their win. In what was an even start to the game Barons stole the lead with a scrappy goal to force the puck home through Josh Bruce on 5.13. Solihull gained the upper hand to go two up with a good goal from Joe Henry timed 11.36. Shortly after that we were all subject to a long delay due to a fault with the lighting with play eventually continuing with the problem unresolved. Solihull took control of the game after the restart to score two quick goals, the first from Richard Slater on 13.46 followed by Josh Bruce’s second timed 15.04 to put Barons in front 4-0. It was a little harsh on Senators who continued to battle away to finish the period strongly against a Barons team that looked in control for large parts of the period.

Despite a lively start to the period, Senators found themselves 5-0 down early on to a Tomas Janak goal on 22.21 but this seemed to inspire Sens more than Barons who came under quite a bit of pressure from a  Senators team that were playing some good hockey. However, Barons showed their class when they worked to turn over possession and create a chance on the penalty kill which was put away nicely by Josh Bruce for his hat-trick on 30.33. Senators didn’t give up and it took another good move to set up Andrew Whitehouse to make it 7-0 to Solihull on 33.24. Senators continued to heap pressure on Solihull’s goal and their efforts were justly rewarded when Tom Humphries popped his effort into the back of the net at 34.13. A well worked powerplay goal assisted Sergevs Jegorovs. Barons looked to hit on the counter but a well organised Sens defence backed up by Bob Browne snubbed out any threat as Senators continued to pressurise Solihull and it paid off on 38.54; Callum Rawson taking his chance well after being teed up by Mikey Mawer. Sens almost pulled another back but Barons netminder got enough on it to take the sting out of the shot to see the puck drop dead just a couple of inches from the goal line. Senators finished the period the stronger team and the silence from the crowd as the teams left the ice spoke volumes.

Although the final period was goalless it was still action packed with Senators arguably the better team who were making Solihull work very hard and pushed them all the way and at times frustrated their opponents in what was a good physical game of hockey. It got a bit heated to see Joel Aheran & Josh Bruce exchange blows followed shortly afterwards by Cam King & David Rogers. Things looked like they may have spilled over even more when a Solihull player was cross-checked from behind but thankfully hockey broke out with both teams trying to add to their tally but unable to do so to see the game finish…Solihull Barons 7 Senators 2.

Sheffield Winter Classic Junior Exhibition Game

Sheffield Winter Classic – Pre-Match Exhibition Game

On Saturday 27^th December the inaugural Sheffield Winter Classic Game between Spartans & Senators will take place at Ice Sheffield. Prior to this game there will be an exhibition game involving SIHA U14’s players from Stormers & Sabres.

Both teams currently sit at the top of their respective tables with a 100% win record from five games. Sheffield Stormers have scored 46 goals in their opening 5 games with Tyler Nixon the highest goal scorer on the team with Sam Colton, Louis Morgan, William Newcombe & Leon Shaw all have double point figures. Defensively they are sound, conceding just one goal to date for which netminder Curtis Warburton tops the netminding stats with a 98.36 save percentage.

Sheffield Sabres have a good bunch of kids playing for them too and have worked their socks off to be top of the pile at this early stage. Max Hirst & Ben O’Brien boast impressive scoring records; one’s that see them 2^nd & 3^rd in their league’s goal scoring charts. Just like Stormers, Sabres have a good defence and can rely on two excellent netminders in Ben Norton & Charlie Renzi who are currently in the top 5 netminders for their league.  

After such a good start, expectations are high for both teams this season and rightly so. Both teams typify what it’s all about, not just the academy but Sheffield ice hockey generally. We are both pleased and honoured that Stormers & Sabres have agreed to give us an exhibition game before the Sheffield Winter Classic Game…Stormers & Sabres game will face-off at 3.30pm.

Senators Weekend: Match Reports

It was a case of mixed fortunes this weekend for Sheffield Senators as they beat Widnes Wild on Saturday and lost to Telford Tigers on Sunday in their home double header at Ice Sheffield.

They were up against it early in the first period against Widnes Wild who deserved their 1-0 lead courtesy of Bobby Caunce’s goal timed at 2.03. As the period progressed Senators got more into the game but struggled to overcome a strong Widnes team, who were playing some good hockey, to trail by the odd goal going into the period break.

Wild got the second period off to a great start when Filip Supa scored on 20.44, finishing off some nice play with assists to Lee Pollitt & Shaun Dipnall. However Widnes were unable to build on their advantage as Senators went on to be the more dominant team and although Widnes did create chances they were outworked by a determined Senators team that deservedly went into the third on level terms at 2-2. It could have been a lead had it not been for some good defensive play including some solid netminding from Wild’s Ruxton but it was a happier Senators team leaving the ice after 40 minutes. Sergevs Jegorovs set up Mikey Mawer to tuck one in from close range on 30.32 with Joel Aheran taking his chance well to equalise timed 33.15, assisted Callum Rawson & Cam King.

The third period was a little closer with both teams enjoying good spells of pressure but Senators always looked the more likely to score which proved to be the case when a superb goal from Josh Gent timed 48.28 put Sens in front with an assist for Cam King. Senators continued to push forward and were rewarded with another good goal from Josh Gent who was having a great game, goal timed 53.05; assisted Tom Humphries & Sergevs Jegorovs to make it 4-2 to Sens. Widnes’s response was swift when on 53.55 Lee Pollitt scored a nice goal, assisted Filip Supa & Shaun Dipnall. This set up a tense finish with both teams exchanging chances but not quite able to make them count as the clock ticked down too see Senators claim what was a hard fought but deserved victory over a hardworking and very good Widnes Wild. Senators Man of the Match went to Josh Gent in what was another terrific game of hockey between these two teams…

Final Score: Senators 4 Widnes Wild 3

Confidence was high on Sunday as second placed Senators squared up to third placed Telford Tigers with Sens looking to revenge their previous disappointing loss earlier in the season.

It was an interesting first period with neither team allowing the other to gain the upper hand but both had their moments to score but solid netminding from both goalies ensured the game was goalless. That was until Tigers’ Russell Plant was called for hooking to leave Senators on the powerplay, however, Telford gained possession from the face off to set up & score a lovely short-handed goal through Ben Washburn, assisted James Smith on 17.01. The score at this point was a little harsh on Senators as there had been very little between the two teams in the first period.

A poor showing from Senators basically gifted the game to Telford who were more than happy to make most of the opportunities laid at their door through sloppy defending, needless penalties and too many basic errors in what was a very uncharacteristic Senators showing for which they only have themselves to blame. Joe Ashton scored on 21.59 which was followed by two Karol Jets goals to make it 4-0 to Telford. The first of Jets two goals was a powerplay goal timed 22.23 followed by his second on 29.58, a short-handed goal with James Smith getting assists on both goals. Senators tried to get themselves back into the game but it just wasn’t happening and Telford, who were now basically just doing the basics right controlled the game. Senators’ frustration boiled over somewhat when Paul Lofthouse was thrown out of the game for cross-checking to the head which gave Tigers a 5 minute powerplay in which they added another to make it 5-0. Joe Ashton was the scorer on 38.01 with assists on the goal from Matthew Price & Ben Washburn.

The reaction from Senators in the third was noteworthy as they salvaged a lot of pride with a much more competent and gutsy performance which resulted them being the better team in the period but they couldn’t break down  Tigers defence with some excellent saves from Denis Bell in Telford’s goal who was made to work hard for his shutout. Telford still threatened but weren’t getting things their own way as much but did manage to score again, a very good goal too through Matthew Price who made no mistake to make it 6-0 on 55.19. Senators continued to battle away but it was to no avail as they went down to what were a better team on the day for which there can be no argument. It’s hard to believe that the shot count was 28-25 in Telford’s favour but you have to show for the full 60 minutes if you are to take anything from a game against any team, let alone one as good as Telford…

Final Score: Senators 0 Telford Tigers 6.

Senators Man of the Match Award went to Martyn Gray who like his teammates will be looking to put things right next week when Senators travel to Telford on Saturday which is followed by a home game on Sunday vs Nottingham Lions; face off 4.30pm

SIHA Inaugural Winter Classic Game

INAUGURAL WINTER CLASSIC GAME: SHEFFIELD SPARTANS V SHEFFIELD SENATORS

Saturday 27th December 2014, 4.15pm Face Off at Ice Sheffield

We are hosting a game on Saturday 27th December, Sheffield Spartans v Sheffield Senators: 4.15pm face off, which we hope will become an annual Christmas event.

This will be the very first competitive game between the two SIHA senior teams; the Sheffield Spartans and the Sheffield Senators. Both teams play respectively in two separate NIHL North leagues. The Spartans being the higher rated team and the older of the two senior teams with this season being their 10th anniversary in which time the Spartans have enjoyed their share of success and in doing so have established the name Spartans. The Spartans have a host of names that have played for them over the years who have now moved on to better things but the team today still has some experienced players who have devoted themselves to the team season after season.

Sheffield Senators play a division below the Spartans and were formed 5 seasons ago in order to further development at the Sheffield Academy and has had some of the present day Spartans pass through their ranks after developing at senior level in what is a very competitive league that the Senators play in. But to those players, they deserved to progress and it makes way for the next batch of hopefuls to get their chance and prosper and to continue the progressive development of Sheffield junior ice hockey players for which both the Spartans and Senators are a vital component.

Sheffield Ice Hockey Academy Joe Walker commented on the game...”This Winter Classic is a first for the clubs two senior teams but it has the makings of a good competitive clash and one I hope the fans of both teams look forward to watching as the two go head to head, play in the right spirit and give you a game to remember. They say Christmas is a time for giving well that’s what is in store from both teams as they will be giving there all in the Sheffield Winter Classic”.

Our aim is to celebrate both teams with this game, whilst having lots of Christmas fun. There will be fantastic raffle prizes including a specially designed Spartans/Senators hockey shirt, signed by all the lads from both teams and an U14 exhibition game before our game from 3.30pm… Make a note of the date Saturday 27th of December 2014 face off 16.30pm ice Sheffield the home of Honesty and Passion.
