Match Report: 27.12.2014 - Panthers v Steelers EC/EIHL

Saturday 27th December 2014 – Nottingham Panthers (14-7-4) v Sheffield Steelers (19-6-1) @ National Ice Centre. Face-off: 7pm, Erhardt Conference/Elite League

Nottingham Panthers – 3
Chris Lawrence (2) – 2nd, OT PP
Charles Landry – 3rd

Sheffield Steelers – 2
Colton Fretter – 1st
Robert Dowd – 1st

The game got underway in Nottingham and it was a dominant start by the Steelers as they controlled the 1st session comfortably and it was Sheffield who took the lead at 3:43 when Roy laid the puck off to Fretter in front of goal before nicely finishing off at the back door to give the Steelers a 1-0 lead. Legue and Dowd would then link up well before hitting the pipes before Fretter sent a cross-ice pass to Forney who laid of Kohn who shot straight at Modig and Roy couldn’t reach the loose puck. It would soon be 2-0 though at 6:00 when Dowd found himself in possession of the puck against the boards to the right of Modig and Dowd fired a wicked shot that beat Modig and the Steelers were in control early on. We would then have a lengthy break as we had to wait for some plexi glass behind the goal of Modig to be repaired. When we got back underway both teams slandered power play chances but Sheffield could have been further ahead when O’Connor saw one shot saved by the stick of Modig before his second shot rebounded out to Kohn who put it wide of the open goal. There would be a coming together between the two teams with several penalties dished out which originally would have had Nottingham on the man advantage but it came out 5v5. Sheffield carried on pressing and almost let in Boxill who broke down the right hand side but his shot went straight into the pads of the Sheffield netminder and Sheffield took a 2-0 lead into the break.
End of the 1st Period: Nottingham Panthers 0–2 Sheffield Steelers
Shots on Goal: Panthers 9-13 Steelers

Both teams came out for the 2nd and after the Steelers controlled the 1st session it was Nottingham who controlled the majority of the 2nd session. Steelers captain Jonathan Phillips was also injured in the 1st period and after going down the tunnel he did return to the bench for the second period but wouldn’t take to the ice for any more of the game. Lawrence and Parent had two great chances to pull a goal back for Nottingham but Doyle would deny Lawrence and Parents backhanded shot went through the crease for Darrell Hay to clear, It would be Parent who tried his luck again next when he was fighting with Roy on the boards before finally breaking himself free but Doyle denied him from in front and then Legue had a great chance to make it 3-0 after being played in by Dowd it was Legue who was on the breakaway not a Panther in sight but he deked and Modig denied him and then Nottingham would attack up the other end they’d get set up and after a shot was rebounded through traffic Lawrence would kick the puck onto his stick and would fire a backhanded shot high past Doyle at 25:55 to bring Nottingham with one goal. Nottingham would continue to carry on working hard after Mosey fired a shot into the side netting the puck would end up on the stick of Lachowicz who turned Kohn but only shot into the body of Doyle. Both teams would slander another power play before Nottingham missed an open goal as there shot was blocked by Baldwin on the line but Nottingham would go into the second interval 2-1 down to the visitors but would start the third period on the powerplay.
End of the 2nd Period: Nottingham Panthers 1–2 Sheffield Steelers
Shots on Goal: Panthers 11–12 Steelers

Nottingham started the third period on the man advantage but it wouldn’t last for long when Graham evened it up with a bad hit on O’Connor but even the Steelers had a poor power play as they just couldn’t get there powerplay set up and Nottingham was able to keep them out of the zone. Was very end to end stuff as Doyle and Modig both had keep out either side  with Modig making the better of the saves especially when the Steelers top line connected well and Forney and Roy both missed good chances just before Mosienko tried a wrap around on Modig makes the scrambling save and Steelers can’t reach the rebound. With the clock ticking down Nottingham levelled the game at 58:37 despite the puck looking like it went out for offside the linesman said no and the puck was played to the right of Doyle when Landry fired a big slap shot from the top of the face-off circle beating Doyle and we had a 2-2 score line. With six seconds left on the clock Forney was called for hooking after a Panther went down too easy and after letting so much go in the game it just seemed really soft call but Nottingham would be starting overtime on the man advantage.
End of the Regulation: Nottingham Panthers 2-2 Sheffield Steelers
Shots on Goal: Panthers 7–9 Steelers

Overtime got underway 5v4 with Nottingham on the powerplay! Confused? Yeah apparently so was the officials it was meant to be 4v3 but anyway after Hicks and Thompson ********* and the pathetic penalty call anyway Nottingham got to work and scored at 60:38 to win the game 3-2 with Lawrence at the top of the right face-off circle fired a massive one timer that beat Doyle to win Nottingham the game and exact replica of the second goal but it was just a one point weekend for the Steelers who remain top going into their double header at Belfast.
Shot on Goal: Panthers 1-0 Steelers
