What a weekend...PART ONE!

Now that my voice is almost back to normal, namely I am not talking like Johnny Vegas from St. Helens and looking for Monkey, it's time to give my personal recap on what was an absolute immense weekend. 2 massive games and 2 massive results were needed. As you know we are now champions but from my eyes how did it unfold? Sit back and enjoy the ride, as you get to find what I went through as a hardened fan. It really was something special...

Welcome to Part One of "What A Weekend!"

In fact this all started Thursday at 6pm when I finished work. Clocked out on time and onto the X5 bus to S26 to rendezvous with Mr FrozenSteelMNL himself. It was about this time that I heard the sad news about Amy. Despite being on a packed bus, my emotions took hold and I admit I cried my eyes. Amy was a member of the hockey family, and despite the illness, always looked upbeat whenever I saw her around. She will never be forgotten. Fly free sweet angel...

Therefore the mood arriving in S26 was sombre as opposed to the usual happy go lucky one. However both myself and Alan realised we could not allow ourselves to get depressed too much so we broke out the cheesiest of the cheesy music courtesy of my laptop. The laughter returned and we're sure that Amy would have approved, in fact she would have been laughing too I guess. Well if you had heard some of the songs played, you would have been left thinking "Oh my days!"

Friday soon came around and with it, the travel down for the day of destiny - part one. Having checked into the hotel early afternoon, we hit Hooters as usual and meeting up with members of Rock The Block. One substantial meal demolished later, it was back to the hotel to get changed for the game. The game was a high intensity one, with Sam Oakford scoring the first period's only goal. When Greg "Juice" Jacina made it 2-0 early in the second, you could have been forgiven that the defence would collapse like it had many times before in the NIC. But the team pulled themselves together and goals from Forney and O'Connor (the latter, a superb shorthanded effort assisted by the ever energetic Tyler Mosienko) had us level after 40 minutes.

The game went from end to end with both sides pushing for the all important next goal. Panthers regained the lead just over 7 minutes from the end, captain Brandon Benedict firing across Josh Unice (who was having another great game) although it appeared that officials missed a clear push on Tyler in the build-up. We had to dig deep again, with time against us. But cometh the man, cometh the moment. Enter Mathieu Roy (who should be an absolute shoe-in for EIHL MVP), clearly injured, in the 58th minute at the right moment to net the rebound after Modig had saved from Forney initially. Both went for it and as it looked like penalty shots would happened, Mosey was whistled for a tripping call and 28 seconds remained. G used his time-out to perfection, the guys set it and again Roy was in the right place again - the puck rolling into the net in slow motion. We went bananas!

On a personal level, my voice was ruined but I was past caring. I was so overjoyed! I will go along and say it ranks amongst the best moments I have experienced in hockey in the years I have been watching this great game. Amy had definitely been shining on our hockey team on the Friday, could we finish the job in the House Of Steel in less than 24 hours? That was the plan, Cardiff lay in wait for us. Destiny was calling Sheffield Steelers.

Match Report: 20.3.2015 - Panthers v Steelers EC/EIHL

Friday 20th March 2015 – Nottingham Panthers (29-15-6) v Sheffield Steelers (33-13-4) @ National Ice Centre. Face-off: 7:30pm, Erhardt Conference/Elite League

Nottingham Panthers – 3
Sam Oakford – 1st
Greg Jacina – 2nd
Brandon Benedict – 3rd PP

Sheffield Steelers – 4
Michael Forney – 2nd
Ben O’Connor – 2nd SH
Mathieu Roy (2) – 3rd, OT PP

Final league meeting between the Panthers and the Steelers for the season and it was in Nottingham where Sheffield had won their two previous visits but could they make it three in a row. Nottingham drew first blood at 8:18 when Sam Oakford had the puck on the blue line and he fired his shot which I think was tipped by Doucet as the puck took a strange deflection to beat Unice but Oakford was announced as the goal scorer and Steelers had to come back from a goal down. Steelers massively outshot their hosts and Mattias Modig was in just outstanding form and was the reason Nottingham went into the 1st break a goal up.
End of the 1st Period: Nottingham Panthers 1–0 Sheffield Steelers
Shots on Goal: Panthers 8-16 Steelers

Into the second period and we was going to have two minutes off 4v4 and Darrell Hay had a chance to level the game but his shot came back off the post before Nottingham broke 1v1 and it was Greg Jacina at 21:28 who fired a shot low and hard past Unice from in between the circles as there wasn’t really anything Sarich could have done to prevent him. Sheffield finally found a way past Modig at 24:09 when Fretter played a cross ice pass to Forney who took a touch off his skate and fired his wrist shot past the glove of Modig for 2-1. Sheffield levelled the game at 32:05 while shorthanded a poor turnover by Cody Wild allowed Tyler Mosienko to pick up the puck who played Ben O’Connor who was on the breakaway and he fired wrist shot straight through Modig to send the visiting fans wild and that’s how it stayed going into the 2nd interval.
End of the 2nd Period: Nottingham Panthers 2–2 Sheffield Steelers
Shots on Goal: Panthers 7–10 Steelers

Big third period and both teams gave as good as they got Nottingham took their second lead of the game at 52:50 while on the man advantage Benedict was at the back door to Unice’s left and managed to get his shot past Unice and Nottingham led 3-2 it was slightly controversial when at the other Mosienko took a big check from behind and the officials just ignored it for some strange reason. Sheffield levelled the game at 57:32 and it was that guy Mathieu Roy, Forney was at the left circle and Modig made the save and Roy fired the rebound into the open goal to send the visiting fans wild and we had 3-3 score line going into overtime.
End of the 3rd Period: Nottingham Panthers 3-3 Sheffield Steelers
Shots on Goal: Panthers 11–6 Steelers

Into overtime and both Modig and Unice had big saves to make but with 28 seconds left Evan Mosey was called for tripping and Sheffield took their timeout and got to work and it was Modig had a save to make from O’Connor and Roy was stood in front and he managed to shoot the rebound under Modig to win Steelers the game 4-3 at 64:47 to leave them top of the league knowing that a win vs Cardiff 24 hours later will secure the league title.
Shots on Goal: Panthers 4-4 Steelers

Match Report: 24.2.2015 - Panthers v Steelers CC

Tuesday 24th February 2015 – Nottingham Panthers (6-5-0) v Sheffield Steelers (8-2-1) @ National Ice Centre. Face-off: 7:30pm, Challenge Cup Semi-Final 2nd Leg

Nottingham Panthers – 4 (7)
Evan Mosey – 2nd
Chris Lawrence – 2nd PP
Robert Farmer – 2nd
Jonathan Boxill – 3rd SH

Sheffield Steelers – 6 (7)
Colton Fretter (2) – 1st PP, 3rd
Mathieu Roy – 1st
Tyler Mosienko – 1st
Ben O’Connor – 3rd
Robert Dowd – 3rd PP

2nd leg of the semi-final on loan Netminder Sam Gospel was deputizing in goal due to Sheffield’s injury crisis and what a game it was going all the way to penalty shots, Steelers took the lead at 4:34 when Colton Fretter on the powerplay fired a nicely taken wrist from the left circle over the left shoulder of Kowalski to make it 1-0. It was very quickly 2-0 at 5:16 when Forney went down the left hand side managed to get a back handed shot off which Kowalski thought he had but it was dropped and Mathieu Roy swiped it home and before we knew it, it was 3-0 at 5:41 when Fretter went down the left and played a back handed pass to the point and Mosienko fired a brilliant one timed shot over the shoulder of Kowalski and in.
End of the 1st Period: Nottingham Panthers (3) 0–3 (4) Sheffield Steelers
Shots on Goal: Panthers 7-15 Steelers

Nottingham pulled a goal back at 30:30 when Bruce Graham had the puck behind the goal and he played to Evan Mosey on the point who fired a wrist shot past the blocker of Sam Gospel for 3-1. It was 3-2 at 37:33 when on the power play Chris Lawrence got the puck to the right of goal before firing a snap shot in off the stick of Gospel. We was all tied up at 38:52 when Farmer lifted a puck over Gospel at close range after a poor turnover by Sheffield to make it 3-3 going into the second period break.
End of the 2nd Period: Nottingham Panthers (6) 3–3 (4) Sheffield Steelers
Shots on Goal: Panthers 14–8 Steelers

Into the third period Ben O’Connor went coast to coast before firing a backhanded shot in past Kowalski at his near post somehow to make it 4-3 to the Steelers at 41:48. Boxill would level it up again though shorthanded at 45:08 when Jonathan Boxill shot straight off the face off and Gospel out and it was 4-4. With the Steelers on the man advantage Gord Baldwin fired a shot from the blue line that bounced of Kowalski and Robert Dowd back handed the rebound in past Kowalski to make it 5-4 at 45:32. Steelers tied it up on aggregate at 55:16 to make it 6-4 to the Steelers when Robert Dowd picked out Fretter in front of goal who shot his backhanded shot past the blocker of Kowalski and the game was going to overtime.
End of the 3rd Period: Nottingham Panthers (7) 4-6 (7) Sheffield Steelers
Shots on Goal: Panthers 9–15 Steelers

Steelers completely dominated the overtime session and should have won it during that 5 minutes but Kowalski made some fantastic saves especially from Cullen Eddy at point blank range. But into the shootout and Sam Gospel was the hero as Kowalski saved Fretter and Forney’s shot he couldn’t keep out Tomas Petruska back hander and then Sam Gospel managed to deny Lawrence, Farmer and Graham the three Nottingham men that you’d put money on and it was Gospel that won the semi-final for the Steelers and it would be Sheffield v Cardiff in the Challenge Cup final on the 8th March.
Shots on Goal: Panthers 3-6 Steelers

FINAL SCORE: Nottingham Panthers (7) 4–7 (8) Sheffield Steelers SO

Match Report: 14.2.2015 - Panthers v Steelers EC/EIHL

Saturday 14th February 2015 – Nottingham Panthers (24-10-6) v Sheffield Steelers (26-10-4) @ National Ice Centre. Face-off: 7pm, Erhardt Conference/Elite League

Nottingham Panthers – 2
Guillaume Doucet – 2nd
Greg Jacina – 3rd

Sheffield Steelers – 3
Ben O’Connor – 2nd PP
Mathieu Roy – 2nd SH
Tomas Petruska – 3rd PP

The Game got underway and it was a goalless first period but really end to end stuff as both teams had countless opportunities to take the lead but both Josh Unice and Mattias Modig were fantastic in between the pipes. There were penalties called on either side but both penalty kills were aggressive and did their job and despite it being a goalless period it was one of the best periods of hockey I’d seen all season.
End of the 1st Period: Nottingham Panthers 0–0 Sheffield Steelers
Shots on Goal: Panthers 13-10 Steelers

Second period got underway and as the puck dropped the chant of “Amy Usher” rang around the arena as it did around the entire league and it sounded fantastic and was just a brilliant gesture. Panthers opened the scoring at 26:25 when Doucet was in front and managed to get a shot off and Unice made a great save but there was no defenceman there to help out and Doucet just picked up the rebound and shot into the empty net for 1-0 and during the celebrations Farmer gave Baldwin a slash who didn’t take lightly and threw a nice punch at Farmer which led to them both dropping the gloves and they both got decent hits in but was eventually broken up by the officials. Steelers levelled at 34:45 while on the man advantage Roy had a great chance to score himself but Modig saved nicely and then Roy would feed O’Connor who fired a fantastic shot top shelf and we level at 1-1. Nottingham had a powerplay with 2.03 left in the 2nd period but at 39:30 shorthanded a Nottingham mistake let in Mathieu Roy on the breakaway who beat off to Panthers and Modig came to claim the puck but changed his mind and Roy just finished nicely past Modig to give Steelers a 2-1 lead going into the break.
End of the 2nd Period: Nottingham Panthers 1–2 Sheffield Steelers
Shots on Goal: Panthers 11–11 Steelers

Into the second period and Nottingham managed to score an equaliser at 47:23 when poor defending by the Steelers left Greg Jacina unmarked at the back post as O'Connor completely left his man and he was played in by Farmer and he easily finished past Unice for a 2-2 game. It was real end to end stuff, both netminders making fantastic save not always convincing but making them none the less, both teams were getting physical with each other but it was the visitors that finally found a way to win in Nottingham this season when at 56:30 on the powerplay Forney was at the top of the circle to Modig’s right before snapping a shot on goal and Tomas Petruska tipped brilliant past Modig to give the Steelers a 3-2 lead. Modig was pulled with a minute left but Steelers held on as they chased every puck doing their best keeping it away from Unice. It was a vital 2 points for the Steelers in this exciting title race.
Shots on Goal: Panthers 6–11 Steelers

FINAL SCORE: Nottingham Panthers 2–3 Sheffield Steelers

Boxscore (1st-2nd-3rd-OT-[PIM]-{PP}-S)

Match Report: 8.11.2014 - Panthers v Steelers EC/EIHL

Saturday 8th November 2014 – Nottingham Panthers (8-1-2) v Sheffield Steelers (8-2-0) @ National Ice Centre. Face-off: 7pm, Erhardt Conference/Elite League

Nottingham Panthers – 7
David Clarke – 1st PP
Cody Wild – 1st
Bruce Graham – 2nd
Bruce Graham – 3rd
Robert Lachowicz – 3rd
Chris Lawrence – 3rd
Chris Lawrence – 3rd SHG

Sheffield Steelers – 2
Tyler Mosienko – 2nd
Ben O’Connor – 3rd PP

The local derby started off in a fast pace but it wasn’t to be a good night for the Steelers as they found themselves on an early penalty kill as Cullen Eddy was called for boarding but Nottingham went close before finally making it count on 2:46 when David Clarke was fed by Chris Lawrence at the right circle before the Nottingham captain fired a peach of a wrist shot past Doyle for 1-0 and before you know it was 2-0 time at 3:53 when Robert Farmer took a shot at Doyle from in front the Steelers netminder made a quality leg pad save but the puck rebounded out to Cody Wild at the point who fired into the empty net It was now that Gerad Adams took his timeout. Things could have very easily been worse for the visitors as Wild had another golden opportunity but couldn’t get his shot away but the period was massively dominated by the home side as Steelers were second to everything. Frank Doyle single handed kept the score line respectable only going into the break 2-0 down but Sheffield did have a few chances and Mattias Modig was in good form keeping out the Steelers but the period definitely belonged to the Panthers who were probably disappointed with their execution.
End of the 1st Period: Nottingham Panthers 2–0 Sheffield Steelers
Shots on Goal: Panthers 18-10 Steelers

Sheffield had to start the penalty kill on the penalty kill but straight away it was already a better performance than it was in the 1st as Sheffield created several decent chances but Modig was in magnificent form to keep out the visitors, Sheffield was throwing everything at them including the kitchen sink when Sarich was denied by the post after firing a nicely taken one timer from the blue line but Sheffield finally broke Modig’s shutout when on 26:00 some fantastic skating and stick handling by Steelers defenceman Ben O’Connor into the Nottingham zone before he threw the puck in front and Mosienko released a back handed shot past Modig to bring the Steelers within one goal. Sheffield would very soon have a 5 on 3 powerplay chance but the visitors just couldn’t seem to find the equaliser as Modig firstly denied Mathieu Roy before then denying Forney and Fretter in quick succession but Nottingham killed the penalty and struck back straight away when at 28:58 a Steelers defenceman ended up on the Ice not sure if it was a call or not but despite that Bruce Graham skating in front of goal and fired a wrist shot past Doyle stick side to restore Nottingham’s two goal lead. It could have very easily been 4-1 but Frank Doyle denied Nottingham on the breakaway at the midway point of the game there would be chances for both teams but not more goals for either side but Sheffield would finish the second period on the man advantage and would look to capitalise at the start of the third period.
End of the 2nd Period: Nottingham Panthers 3–1 Sheffield Steelers
Shots on Goal: Panthers 12–13 Steelers
Steelers were still on the powerplay after the penalty at the end of the 2nd period and go to work quickly and very soon made it count pulling the visitors back within one goal as Ben O’Connor scored his first Steelers goal at 40:37 and what a goal it was when he found himself in possession of the puck on the blue before firing a big slap shot through traffic and in off the post to make it a 3-2 score line. You’d think it would spur the visitors on but it did the opposite as Panthers soon got a goal back at 42:34 when Bruce Graham scored his second of the game when Lachowicz threw the puck in front of goal and Graham re-directed it past Doyle for 4-2. After some 4v4 hockey both teams were back to full strength and Nottingham struck again at 50:13 as Cullen Eddy made a mistake and Doyle attempted to come and poke check it to safety by Lachowicz beat the Steelers netminder to the puck and chipped it over him for 5-2 and just 12 seconds later it was 6-2 as Chris Lawrence saw his initial shot saved by Doyle but the rebound past him at the near post. From being well and truly in the game at 3-2 had very quickly became 6-2. The scoring as finally completed at 56:21 when Nottingham scored a shorthanded goal as Chris Lawrence who had been impressive all night skated down the right 2v1 and Sarich had gone down to block the shot but the wrist shot was brilliant taken and went in off Doyle’s post for 7-2. A bad night at the office but luckily Sheffield faces Fife at home less than 24 hours later to try and put this to bed.
Shots on Goal: Panthers 19–18 Steelers

FINAL SCORE: Nottingham Panthers 7–2 Sheffield Steelers

Boxscore (1st-2nd-3rd-OT-[PIM]-{PP}-S)

Match Report: 20.9.2014 - Panthers v Steelers CC

Saturday 20th September 2014 – Nottingham Panthers (1-0-0) v Sheffield Steelers (1-0-0) @ National Ice Centre. Face-off: 7pm, Challenge Cup

Nottingham Panthers – 2
Chris Lawrence
Brandon Benedict

Sheffield Steelers – 1
Jonathan Phillips

The first derby of the season, Kowalski in goal for the Panthers and Doyle in goal for the Steelers, Dean Smith was the referee for the night and what an interesting night he was going to have.

The game got underway and Nottingham got going the quicker with Jacina having the first shot of the night as he shot into the body of Doyle after some good puck possession by Nottingham in the Steelers zone but then not long after Steelers were on the penalty kill as Baldwin was called two minutes for cross checking and a great chance would fall to Cody Wild but he would only be able to shoot high and wide, Dowd would keep the pressure on in the Nottingham zone and would force a mistake out of the Panthers D and he would play the puck to Fretter who could only shoot into the body of Kowalski before Stevie Lee was next to try his luck from the blue line but Doyle padded it wide as Steelers returned to full strength before Doyle up to his old tricks again performing a fantastic save of Lawrence left all alone at the back door. Steelers would go close after a Thomas mistakes let in Nottingham some good defensive play stole the puck back for Sarich to play in Latulippe who shot into the body of Kowalski just before Fretter tipped wide from a Roy pass. Then the decisions started as Latulippe was called two minutes for holding when it was clearly interference on the Steelers forward but it was soon levelled up as Graham was thrown in the box as well. Both teams back to full strength Dowd would break down the right to play to Latulippe skating in on goal but couldn’t re-direct the puck on target before the Steelers third line started putting pressure on the Nottingham goal but came up against a persistent Kowalski. Sheffield’s best opportunity of the 1st period came on the power play when Cullen Eddy skates into the zone before passing to Forney on the left hand side who’s backhand pass found Mathieu Roy who just put his shot wide.
End of the 1st Period: Nottingham Panthers 0–0 Sheffield Steelers
Shots on Goal: Panthers 13-13 Steelers

The second period got underway and it started in a physical manner as Di Diomete hit Stevie Lee into the boards hard to the amusement of the travelling support but Nottingham would continue to put pressure on when Mosey saw his shot just go wide followed by Kowalski denying Hewitt and Roy but on 24:32 Nottingham took the lead as the Panthers were putting on the pressure eventually the puck dropped to the left of Doyle and Lawrence skates on goal it looked like it went in off his skate but it happened that fast I think he was just trying to stop and there was no distinct kicking motion and Nottingham seem to kick on from there as Doyle had to perform some heroics to keep Sheffield in this game. Mid-way through the second Kowalski showed what such a good netminder he is when somehow he denied Dowd not one but twice with an open goal and there could have possibly been a third. Nottingham would soon be back on the power play and would be looking to score a second as Cody Wild fired a slap shot from the blue but Doyle managed to save it with the blocker before the Nottingham fans thought they’d scored again only to realise the puck was in the side netting of the goal and Bruce Graham would also see an attempt go through the crease as Sheffield successfully killed the penalty, one again the third line was performing this time Hewitt putting on pressure and showing a fair bit of speed which I wasn’t use to seeing Steelers would have another powerplay as Jacina was given two minutes for boarding on Fretter but Nottingham would kill it and then on 37:48 assisted by Hewitt and Dowd, Kowalski made a save of the British bulldog and the puck would bounce in front of goal for Jonathan Phillips to slot it past Kowalski and level the score.
End of the 2nd Period: Nottingham Panthers 1–1 Sheffield Steelers
Shots on Goal: Panthers 17–8 Steelers

Third period got underway and Sheffield attempted to get on the front foot as Fretter shot straight into the body of Kowalski from just inside the neutral zone and then a poor giveaway by Baldwin let Lachowicz in but Steelers defended well and then Forney saw his back hand go just wide of Kowalski’s goal and then at the other end Doyle was making a glove save of Robinson. Some fantastic work by Dowd behind Kowalski’s goal saw him pass to Baldwin on the left hand board but his wrist shot only went as far as the glove of Kowalski. Nottingham would start piling on the pressure and eventually would be rewarded after missing several chances Panthers took the lead again on 45:56 when Doyle made a save the puck fell to Brandon Benedict to shoot into the open goal. There would be a lot of one way traffic with Nottingham controlling the majority of the third period having long periods of pressure in the Sheffield zone in which the Steelers struggled to clear their zone at times and brought even more pressure on themselves. It was almost 3-1 when Doyle had to make a diving save to deny Jacina at the back door. Sheffield were trying to create some offence but couldn’t break down a resilient Nottingham defence and ended up giving up 2 challenge cup points as Sheffield tasted their first defeat of the season.

Steelers Dominate At The NIC v Panthers: (EIHL) Game Recap

Saturday 1st March 2013 - Nottingham Panthers (23-15-6) v Sheffield Steelers (24-15-4) @ National Ice Centre. Face off: 7pm

The final match between the Steelers and the Panthers and it would be Sheffield that would be taking home the extra point.

Frank Doyle in goal for the Steelers, Craig Kowalski in goal for the Panthers, No Brent Henley for Nottingham as he is banned and once again no Steven Goertzen and no Mark Thomas for the Steelers. Nottingham took a two goal lead and would strike first at 6:52 as Matt Francis would score with assists from Robert Farmer and Tom Norton and then on 8:56 after a give away on the blue line David Clarke would score to make it 2-0 with an assist being credited to Leigh Salters. New Sheffield head coach Gerad Adams would call a time out at 8:56 of the first period and apparently the players would be back on the Ice after 10 seconds of a 30 second time out with Gerad simply saying some simple words "Hit Them".
End of the 1st Period: Nottingham Panthers 2-0 Sheffield Steelers

Sheffield would pull a goal back on 36:01 when Tim Spencer scored assisted by Chris Blight and Jeff Legue as Sheffield were massively out shooting Nottingham after already wasting three power play attempts.
End of the 2nd Period: Nottingham Panthers 2-1 Sheffield Steelers

Sheffield would come out for the third period and carry on where they left off where they carried on hammering at Kowalski's goal and on 57:01 they found their equaliser with the scorer being Stefan Meyer after a fantastic assist by Drew Fata. Both teams had failed to score on the power play on the night four for Sheffield and three for Nottingham.
End of Regulation and Overtime: Nottingham Panthers 2-2 Sheffield Steelers

Into the shootout and first up would be Chris Blight who would successfully score against Kowalski followed up by Matt Francis who would be denied by Frank Doyle. Maxime Lacroix would step up to make it 2-0 in the shoot out before Eric Werner had to score to keep the shoot out going but wouldn't be able to convert and Sheffield would win 3-2 and take the extra point home.
